2014 Sport Engine Hesitation/Stumble

Is Ford using air to air intercoolers, or water to air?

If air to air, intercooler condensation and / or icing is common in a lot of vehicles. The "stumble" comes from a charge of moisture/water being sucked through the induction system.

It's air to air... But the OP isn't getting on it that much when he first starts out... I doubt he is hammering it when he first starts out.... It's not like the stall issue that is water in the IC... This is more like a "hiccup" when first starting out when the vehicle has sat and cooled back down... More like a burble...

Go drive an Acadia or Traverse... They do the same thing under the same conditions... Ask the sales person to have you drive it off the lot yourself... Then tool around the lot under part throttle and it will do the same thing for about 30 secs.

All the ones I have rented did the same thing as my Ex Sport.... And like the conditions you describe...

What is interesting is after my wife drives it for a week (its her car!), it wont do it... It hooks up and goes! Maybe I'm just to "easy" on it...!

Wife has 13 Acadia Denali, I drive it all the time, cant say I have experienced the same behaviour.

She says no such issue exists when she drives it.

Sgt1411,

My neighbor that had the bad oxygen sensor is doing his annual tour of the golf courses in Phoenix, he won't be home until he runs out of courses which is usually 2-3 weeks.

I called him on his cell and he said he didn't pay attention to which sensor was bad, just glad it was fixed. He did tell me he figured out why his putting was hooking.

Sorry Sgt, no help.

I asked two different dealership Service Managers and some folks in Dearborn, but nothing about any oxygen sensor. Im wondering because of all the legal issues around the EcoBoost everyone is too scared to say anything.

If your neighbour is back maybe try him again if possible.

Without an oxygen sensor part number Im dead in the water.

SGT- Neighbor still in AZ. They are staying there for spring training. Talked to his son there, he's POSITIVE that the tech replaced MAP sensor. I guess the EcoBoost doesn't have a MAF sensor according to his son.

Tech told him that the cool, humid air was affecting some of the sensors

Thanks for the update

It seems like its still surging and stumbling even at highway 50-60MPH steady throttle around 1500-2000RPM.

Running 91 Octane

My PI is having the same stumble, upon light-medium acceleration on the freeway you can hold the throttle and feel the truck trying to figure out what to do. Also it seems like the truck doesnt want to downshift as quickly from rolling start to full throttle, seems there's a 2 second pause before the truck wants to accelerate, and then it seems to studder at low RPMs before it rockets from 2500-redline.

Seems to have started after I pulled the neg terminal on the battery to reset SYNC.

If you pulled the battery cable to reset sync, then you also reset the transmission's adaptive learning strategy, engine management system, idle and fuel trims. These can take 100-500 miles to relearn. Symptoms you describe are consistent with what I've experienced when disconnecting the battery.

Mine has definitely had some turbo lag since day one. It took a little getting used to at first but I figured out how to adjust how much I press the gas when I first start accelerating in order to minimize the lag. Someone else on here can probably offer a more technical explanation but if you just barely press the gas for a split second when you first start accelerating it will spool up the turbos and then you can open it up after that and the car will take off.

It was explained to me that what you're experiencing is the delay in downshifting.

Apparently the Livernois tunes remove most of that hesitation.

TSB 14-00017 is a PCM re-calibration on the F150 EcoBoost 3.5L and it has been reported that lag is reduced. I hope the update comes soon for the Explorer Sport 3.5L.

Hey guys. Im glad I joined this forum. So many helpful posts.

I have an issue with my sport. the first day I drove my ex sport I noticed some turbo lag. The problem is the one I test drove dont remember any turbo lag. Does anyone know what could be causing it and making it different from the dealer demo ? thanks in advance for your help.
Your profile shows a 2008 Civic?? Can't say I've noticed any lag.

Peter

That's what I have now. Replaced 2011 Ex. Limited in April.

Downshifting yourself with the paddle shifters and keeping the RPM up will help with the lag issue if you need a quick boost of acceleration. Welcome to the world of turbo, the lag is typical. My STi has some turbo lag and it is modified.

I found the hose clamps a little loose from the intercooler (or whatever they call it). One of the tubes was actually pulled out some from the connection hose. I tightened every clamp I could get a screwdriver on. Easy to check. Pass side of engine was where mine was loose. You could have a boost leak. Ours has virtually no lag.

I dont have a new explorer but this is just a thought with our '14 focus.....not sure if the same on the EX.......Every time we start the car it automatically in traction control mode and is a complete dog. Turn off the traction control and it runs perfect......it really wakes up

Traction control should only 'kick' in when required. So unless you are 'flooring' it every time from a stop, I can't see why it would come on. I haven't noticed the traction control warning coming on in either the Explorer I had or the present vehicle.

let me make myself a little more clear. Ford considers it to be traction control/driver assistance. In the case of my focus it does not ONLY keep the wheels from slipping. It will control the transmission and engine in different ways to allow for better fuel economy, handling in corners, smoother shifting in acceleration and deceleration, and also in braking and slipping on both dry and wet, icy or snow covered roads.

Like i said, the traction control is in the "on" mode each time the vehicle is started and must be turned off for better performance.

I also said this may not be the same in explorers but being that it is in a focus it would only make sense they would use it in explorers also

You do know that with a $4.95. app called Torque Pro, an android device (I use a Nexus 7 tablet I got off ebay for $139 but you can use your phone), and an $11, OBD II WiFi adaptor you can monitor dozens of engine features right? Wanna know your boost level and when it comes on, its got that, Engine temps in 6 different places, it has that. Timing advance, engine vacuum etc etc etc. Clearly your Explorer need a trip to the dealershibut in the meantime you may have a better idea of whats going on under the hood.

...Cant go to the dealer till monday. Second tank. 93 right now.

I want to get your regional customer service manager involved, bmmz. Shoot a PM my way with the specifics and I'll make it happen. Be sure to include your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership.
