2020 Explorer Issues - 4WD Fault, Pre Collision Assist Not Available, Service Advance Trac

So for the 5th time my 2020 ST has lit up like a Christmas tree when getting off of the highway. Warning lights come all at once: 4WD Fault Service Required, Service AdvanceTrac, Pre-Collision Assist Not Available, +Hill assist not available + Auto Hold Fault.

Warning lights immediately disappear when the car is restarted, and the car is not thrown into a limp mode when these issues come on.

I did some searching and the only experience I could find of something similar was on reddit and the car ended up getting lemoned without any specific root cause explained.

Going to call the dealer on Monday, but please reach out if you have had a similar experience or know someone that has!
what did the dealer say? Mine has just started doing this in the last week.

ESP starts after the 3year/36K mile warranty ends so most new cars don't need an ESP.
Unless you want to save a few bucks by buying it within 1yr/12k or you want the rental coverage which is only included if you buy an ESP.

I rather save the money and get the loaner from day 1 since I know I'm buying it anyways.

I just took mine in for the same issues of these warning lights popping up and they replaced a sensor. Now I have another warning appearing (about check headlamp system see manual) but my headlights and fog lamps seem to be working fine. Wonder if this new sensor threw something else off? After them having my vehicle for more than 8 days due to the warnings...I don't want to take it right back.

If you had the speed sensor replaced, it really shouldn't have anything to do with the headlights! You might want to head back to the dealer or run a Forscan diagnostic yourself. Based on what the results of that are, you can reset the module in question. I think the headlights are under the control of BCM but not sure.

I have 20 Platinum, 44k miles, with exact same symptoms as original post in this thread. Dealer cant look at it for 8 weeks. We are still able to drive the car. I have used an OBD2 code reader but it wont pull too much, looking into Forscan and cable. I will also look into the speed sensor.

This is the part# of the front axle speed sensor I got for my 2020 ST. Forum vendor Levittown has it for $31 shipped (including shipping discount code).

I lost a significant qty of front differential oil. Got the oil below (not cheap) afterward and did a drain and fill. I believe the front diff hold 0.6 quarts so you only need a single quart. It would have saved me some time to have the oil bought and ready.

Thanks man, sad when our **** is covered under warranty but service is such a PITA that we would rather do it ourselves. I just ordered the Forscan cable to get more codes tonight. Ill be doing it myself tomorrow if I spot those codes, hell may just do it anyway.

You got that right. Crazy world nowadays. Sounds like you got a wired Forscan cable, but I would highly recommend the Forscan-recommended OBDLINK MX+ bluetooth adapter. You can run Forscan Lite with it for diagnostics and service procedures, yet it will also work with a laptop for configuration changes. It's expensive, but I use it often and it's saved me a bunch of time.

Yeah bought the cable for the laptop, will get the bluetooth if we decide to keep this rig. Our local Ford dealer is so swamped that we may trade it in for something with better dealer support. I bought a Innova 5410 OBD2 reader but its not showing the advanced Ford codes. I really want to see that C0633 code before I put it up on jacks.

Here are my FORScan retrieved codes:

U102F (PCM) - Bad data from all wheel drive module, lamp off, DTC "intermittent at time of request"
U0100 - IPC Inst. pnl ctrl mod - Lost coms with ECM/PCM A, lamp off, DTC present
U0418 - IPMA- img proc mod - Invalid data from brake control module A, lamp ON, DTC present

C0020 ABS pump motor short to ground, lamp off, DTC previously set, not present
U3003 ABS ckt voltge below threshold, lamp off, DTC previously set, not present
P0562 ABS system voltge low, lamp off, DTC previously set, not present
U0102 ABS lost comms with x-fer case ctrl mod, lamp off, DTC present
U0146 ABS lost comms with ser data gw A, lamp off, DTC present
U011D ABS lost comms w AWD mod, lamp off, DTC present

So at this point I have to rule out half shaft speed sensor, that code is not showing up, bummer. Looks like the ABS system is FUBAR, TSB states it might have a bad ground but it is really buried under fuse box and fire wall.

I'd have the dealer take a look at it before attempting to do something yourself otherwise they could say it was something that you caused. Just saying.

Hey everyone, new owner of a new to me 20 limited. It has 68k on it and started throwing the Christmas tree of AWD lights at me. After reading through the forum I went ahead and changed the half shaft speed sensor (only $25 from the local dealer) but it still isn't happy. I have noticed what seems like a whine when letting off of the accelerator and I have also noticed that the power distribution display will sometimes show the power being sent to the front wheels as well as the rear, but then the front will drop out for a second or two and then comes back on the display. It has me leaning towards possibly the actuator or potentially internal damage to the transfer case (really hoping its not the second possibility) Any and all insight is appreciated as I am outside of the power train warranty and don't have a bunch of money to throw at it. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Forum.
Depending on the circumstances the power can be displayed going to the rear wheels. I seldom used the Intelligent AWD/4WD Display in the Explorer but it's not uncommon to have some power going to the rear when starting off. Is there a certain condition in which the power to the front drops out and comes back on? Are you slowing down perhaps?

Thanks for the warm welcome, Peter. From what I can tell is normal, under acceleration, all 4 wheels get power and once you reduce throttle, the AWD drops out and is only RWD. Unless you put it in a different drive mode(sport, or slippery for example). However, even when I use one of those modes, I can see the power from the front wheels drop out during acceleration which is abnormal. As stated in my previous comment, I installed a new half shaft speed sensor I purchased from the dealer, but the issue still occasionally persists. The thing that worries me the most is the odd whine I hear from the front axel area when I let off the accelerator. It definitely does not sound right. I do need to do a complete fluid swap in everything (oil, front and rear difs, trans, transfer case, and power steering). I also noticed that it throws the errors more often at lower speed like in a parking lot, compared to say interstate travel. Thanks again for replying, its nice to be a part of a community that has a passion for their vehicles and keeping them going.

It would seem normal. When I replied I was actually thinking about the 5th gen as that is the last time I actually looked at that display. :banghead:

I had the same issue. Mine is going into the shop for the 5th time since October. Transmission has been replaced and this car has 23,x.. miles! none of the 8 Ford dealerships can get me in for a month. IMO that alone should speak for the issues Ford has. This is my first Ford in 23 years. I will never purchase another. This has been a nightmare. I have an attorney at this point.
any update on this issue? Mine is at the dealership now, I called 9 dealerships and the 800 customer service number before getting help. Local dealerships would not touch it and said “the ST models have too many electrical and transmission problems.” I had to take it almost 2 hours away.

They were willing to sell it but they refuse to service it? That's really BS and I suggest you report them to Ford.

The dealership I purchased it at would take it but not for 8-10 weeks. The dealership 1 mile from my work told me no bc I didn’t buy it from them. It is still under factory warrant and I have a ford extended warranty. I reported it to the 800 number but was told bc dealerships are private owned they can make their own rules .
