2022 Ford Maverick revealed — hybrid pickup gets 37 mpg, costs $21,490

Was the Baja better than the Brat, I used to clean those up at a dealer in 1985-1988?

The Maverick is based on an existing platform, which should help the sales and the features of those common vehicles.
It shares a platform but is heavily modified to function as a truck. The Santa Cruz is basically a Tucson with the rear cargo converted to a bed. Hince the limited bed payload capacity. I think Ford hit the target a lot better with how they developed the Maverick. Also, by the time tongue weight of a trailer is factored in there is likely little left to load into the bed of the Tucson. The Maverick can still take a decent load in the bed while towing.

If you truly put 1,500 pounds of cargo in the Maverick, who’s driving it home?

I’m sure a lot more happened to the Tucson than slapping a bed on it, and I’d also bet the Maverick isn’t all that modified. Surely isn’t a ground up new vehicle. Which, with Ford, is probably a good thing.

What are the likely engines and transmissions for that truck? Those have a direct impact on the ability to tow heavy loads etc. The newer Fords have much better transmissions than they used to, back in the 90's, earlier, and versus the five speed autos.

I've got my eye on the 3.7 NA V6, and the 6R80, for my 99 SOHC upgrade. The newer engines, plus the transmissions, are much better than the last generations of both. They have better power and efficiency, plus the stronger trans(most of them).

2.5 hybrid, and 2.0 eco boost as an option. 8 speed transmissions.

The Maverick comes standard with the 2.5L non turbo hybrid engine. The hybrids have a CV transmission. The 2.0L Ecoboost comes with an 8-speed transmission. The hybid is rated to tow 2,000 lbs. and the Ecoboost is rated for 4,000 lbs.

The Mustang guys have gotten a lot of power from the 3.7L V6. It is a stout engine and very reliable since the water pump is external. Also, the 6R80 transmission has been proven to be quite reliable and can take a lot of power in stock form. I am surprised more people aren't using them in builds because they are plentiful and inexpensive.

Looking at the later engines, I was happy to see that the water pump isn't internal on all of them. That's one of the key items of the 3.7 that caught my eye. The intake manifold looks bad(very wide on the right side) for swapping into the older Fords with the AC box there. I saw that the 3.7 came in most Fords over the last several years, that helps a lot.

I couldn’t figure out how they were gonna come up cheaper than the Hyundai. Makes sense with the far cheaper Mexican labor VS being US built.

I thought the 5th gen Explorers wouldn't sell due to the transverse mounted engine. I was wrong. I don't think the people who are interested in this vehicle care about it being FWD. They will like the style, functionality, economy and price. Most people who buy trucks never take them off road or tow anything with them. I showed the Maverick to my wife last night and was surprised she said it is something she would drive and wants to look at one to replace her Edge. The 2.5L hybrid would be perfect for her. I really like that the hybrid is a non turbo engine. This and it being only FWD should make it quite dependable as the miles rack up. Also, I think a hybrid is a much more viable vehicle than an EV at this point in time. The Maverick is the first truck I have seen that can replace a sedan and not extract a penalty for MPG, maneuverability or price. I think it is going to be a massive hit.

As for me, I will stick with my V8 4WD dinosaur. Nothing new these days really appeals to me. IMO, the 4th gen Explorers/Mountaineers are the the best mid sized SUV Ford has offered that has comfort, features, 6-7 person seating, economy, dependability, towing capability and decent off road ability.
light duty and or comutting it looks like a good deal ii personally dont like turbos on small 4 and 6 engines and 8s should not need it. diesels are the exception due to even small ones are heavery duty . now if dealers actually get base models is the question wher i live they only like to stoch the ones with every option. work trucks they only carry white

Direct fuel injection (especially ones without dual port injection) and turbos on a small under designed engine promotes nothing but future headaches. The small four cylinder engines are the worst of the bunch regarding Ford vehicles. The V6s are better but still have the same issues to a lesser degree. The turbos they use in these engines aren't very durable either. If they aren't maintained religiously and often many will have oil burning issues before they reach 100k miles. Also, carbon buildup on the intake valves of GDI engines is a real PITA. The move toward small turbocharged engines is just more planned obsolescence by automakers. It won't be long before these cars depreciate to a point that a major repair totals them out.

I like the front end of this Maverick better than the Ranger, the Ranger front looks odd, as if it was rushed or redesigned later on again.

Has Ford worked out anything to improve the direct injection intake valve coking issue? Everything they bring out as new tech, has many issues for a lot of years, until they redesign it to make it better. That's why I would avoid any internal water pump engines, or the DI until they figure it out better.

They are using dual port fuel injection now. This means a GDI fuel injector squirting into the combustion chamber and and a standard injector squirting into the intake tract like old designs would do. The standard injectors only fire occasionally and is supposed to keep the intake valves clean of carbon. I can't say how effective this is at this point in time. I think Ford started doing this with 2017 or 2018 models. Also, I would highly recommend turbocharged engines run a catch can system to help keep oil from the PVC system gumming up the intake tract and intake valves.

For everyday driving, i think the Maverick would be a great choiuce. Small, fuel efficient, I mean it's no body on frame truck like the 7.3 gasser 2500s, but for 95% of buyers, the Mav should be more than enough. If I didnt need the 4wheeling capability, I would definitely get. Mav for commuting & home depot runs. Although if it could fit an entire pallet of bricks, Id have no need for a work truck... and would liekly be overloading it somewhat regularly.

Theres lots of potential in this for a detailing rig, especially if you use customer water & power. Put a shell on to keep your chemicals & vacuums & pressure washer and the more delicate stuff liek your polishers and odds & ends can be in the cab, and still have room for another person.

I understand that I've already put 60 miles on it most of it testing out the awd system which has excided my expectations. Handling hills and dips on a forest service road. Keep in mind this is also on street all seasons. My dad has already commented on the rails and tie downs which where not even on his ranger. Bed lighting 240 volt in bed. Also same bolt pattern as explorers. I could go own but I'm just gocking. 3/4 tons are awesome but I miss the Yukon XL and the excursion 3/4 tons. Were you had a family hauler plus could tow almost anything. But that will never happen again.

Interesting. Maybe AWD isnt so bad, and combine that with the hybrid. Hmmmmmmm that could be a really good DD/weekend softroader. (dont worry I couldnt afford a Mav (or any new car fr that matter) so the X isnt going anywhere) If it can do FS roads with some ATs hybrid as a DD and something to explore lightly on the weekends, which means I could build the X into a dedicated trail rig... oh well Ill get a 2024... in 2034!

True that, neighbor had a Burb with the 8.1 I think it was, that was a beast!

I like the color

I love it!
My dad has a troublesome 2014 Jeep I keep telling him to trade it in towards one of these

Will be watching your reviews!

Ouch man see I kinda figured with it being the last year before the refresh that all the kinks would be out. Slash wouldn't have to worry about the recalls. These things keep going so quick here. It's not funny. Mines a ecoboost I love it I've taken both out. Guys at the ford dealer are doubtful about the awd hybrid 🤷‍♂️
