What are the primary advantages of this mod, I know very little about it.
Can you give me some more information ?
I know people put under drive pulleys on 'stangs, but what exactly does it achieve, and how - sell the idea to me, and I might be interested.

Give me a bit more background and I might be in.

Not sure what went on there, Firefox crahed after the first post, so I logged back on and had to do it again...
Sorry about the double postage.

I'll take care of that for you.

Now then. You will gain a little HP with an under drive pulley set.
What it does is slow down the crank shaft speed & alternator speed hence underdrive.

Typicly an underdrive pulley set consist of a smaller crank pulley & smaller alternator pulley.

They work 2 ways.

By the use of a lighter material (usually aluminum) on the cranshaft pulley than stock (usually steel). This means less energy is lost in the rotation of the crankshaft by turning a lighter pulley.

The pulley is also made smaller to reduce weight. The smaller pulley results in the serpentine belt rotating at a slightly lower speed. A well engineered set of pullies compensates for this by providing a larger alternator pulley and a larger water pump pulley.

IE your pulleys work like a set of gears, if you make the input gear smaller, you have to make the the output gear larger to compensate if you desire the same final drive ratio.

Keep in mind--the combination of the balance weight, and pulley design being unique to Explorer-Mountaineer, this is a brand new application.

It should do as well as other applications, at freeing up about 15+ HP

I hope it will be that much. I bought a set of 94/95 mustang pullies last year to see if I could get them to work. No Dice. The reason they would not work was not because of the crank pulley or the alternator pulley. It was the water pump pulley. the water pump pulley would have rubbed the idler pulley just to the upper right of it. This is what I'm guessing would be the issue. There is not much room for expansion on the water pump pulley at all. I would at least hope they could make a lighter crank pulley if not a full set of underdrive pulleys.

I have a set of FRPP underdrive pulleys on my Mustang. I did notice after I installed them, a shade more vibration at idle. This may happen on an X or M too.

I would be interested, couldn't vote on the poll, because I don't know. Price is a factor, as well as reliability. I have alot of extra electrical stuff on my truck, and I don't want a dead battery. I also tow a travel trailer, so cooling is important too. Just need more info.

I'm hoping that the same length serpentine belt can be used.

I know the sets I have seen for the Mustangs do but, on my '92 Cougar with the 3.8 NA V6 I would have to use a shorter belt.

You do not have to underdrive the alternator; you can use an overdrive pulley on it.

Not exactly. What the UD crank pulley does is slow down the accessories that are driven by itds belt. It does not slow donw the crank speed.

I would expect the pulley to be competitively priced. I feel that you will probably have to go to a different size belt. Charging problems. I haven't seen any with my set up and I just have a crank pulley. Cooling problems-the manufacturer and I have already adressed this and we don't forsee any problems.

Just to confirm any suspicions this will not be an overnight solution. Once I get the total amount of people willing to commit I will submit this to the proper channel at which time they will evaluate whether there is a market for it or not. I believe that once the market is established then we will prototype a pulley/set then R&D will take at least 3months minimum. The manufacturer I am dealing with will only provide the best quality and would not question charging or cooling problems whatsoever. I currently have been dealing with a member(undisclosed) on these forums which will be my test subject upon agreement with my manufacturer.Cheers-James

My Mustang used the same belt. Not to say that this set up will or not. Like I said, the water pump pulley will be the toughest constraint on the development. If they can't enlarge it, it will probably take a smaller belt.

My neighbor did have a charging issue with UD pulleys on his 90 5.0 Mustang. It was fixed by replacing the original alternator pulley.

When you underdrive the water pump, the pulley is larger than stock and will take a different belt.

I also had charging issues on my SOHC with an UD alternator pulley. I remedied it by using a smaller alternator pulley ( overdrive ).

What I said & what I meant were two different things:confused:
I didn't catch it until I saw your response Al.

Wait a minute--
it would take a smaller pulley on alternator to make it spin faster---
I ride a bike enough to understand this---

That's it. I quit. I can't seem to pull my head out my a$$ today.

I'll try again when I get home from work.:salute:
