My Wife whooped my butt driving her 4.0 X!!!!
We decided to do a quick little race from the light to the next light. She took off and so did I. She was driving our 97 X 4.0 and i was in my Monty 5.0
Trucks are the same year and with the same interior package. She has 4WD and i have AWD, other than different drivetrains trucks are identical. She was winning by half a car length. I even have MAC Cold air intake on my truck! CANT BELIEVE THIS!!!!!
IS 4.0 really is faster or is it just me? Dead Link Removed

sounds kinda strange .. lol.. you in a 5.0 mountaineer? or monty carlo? stick, manual? i dont know.. i would think the 5.0 would have murked the x tho.. fast x u got then b. lol.. what u do to it so i can beat 5.0's too =] lol..

4.0 SOHC is faster then the a stock 5.0 v8. Its really not that hard to believe. She has a 5speed auto and your 5.0 only has a 4speed. That is where the 5.0 has the biggest disadvantage. Other then the 6100rpm shift points the sohc has.

You're engine is turning 4 wheels Hers is turning two. Take your front drive shaft off and run em again. LOL. Of course I'm joking but you get the idea.

I hate to say it, but chances are youre right!
I did notice that shift points are shorter on my X. Monty take a while to go from 1st to 2nd, while explorer would be in 3rd when my monty only go to 2nd. makes sense to me........
cant believe that i got smacked in my own game by my own girl!:confused:

There is also a weight differential between the two. The 4speed in the 5.0 and the 5.0 is quite a bit heavier than the 4.0. So all things considered the 4.0 is actually faster in stock form, but the displacement rules when it comes to after market mods. Dollar for dollar you will get more horsepower from the 5.0 and quickly overtake the 4.0.

the SOHC pushes prolly about 190-200 to the wheels, while the 5.0 w/AWD prolly pushes 180 to the wheels.

If you are talking a stock SOHC, those numbers are inaccurate. The correct number is around 180 RWHP.

That sounds right to me, seeing how I know you've had yours up on the dyno many of times. Also, it goes hand in hand with the 10% to 15% in power loss from the crank to the wheels with an automatic.

I am not a firm believer over displacement seeing how in todays standards there is no limit and there are many more factors to just displacement. But granted in general there is no doubt power adders will side with the 5.0.

It also matter what type of 4.0 sohc you have. Ford had 4 different types of 4.0 in their explorers. Look at your vin and compare it to your Hanse manual. You would think they would all be the same but there not.
I only found out because i was waiting for someone and started to read the engine charts in the manual.
I have the E type. 205 hp.

And again, the 5.0 is "pushing" those horses to 4 wheels the 4.0 is going to two wheels.

And again, the 5.0 is "pushing" those horses to 4 wheels the 4.0 is going to two wheels.

That's entirely irrelevant unless the two wheels are breaking traction, in which case the auto 4wd would kick in and lock the transfer case anyways....

However, as those with the BWM and a lighted switch can attest, the C-trac system will significantly increase the duty cycle of the transfer case clutch under WOT conditions, so essentially it is, in fact, locked in 4wd.

Again, even if it was, in fact, in 2wd, 2wd versus 4wd makes no difference. The parasitic losses due to the front drivetrain are there in both vehicles.

The biggest issue, as already mentioned, is the gearing of the 4 speed versus the 5speed trans, combined with the lower gearing on the V-6 (it likely has the 4.10, not the 3.55 the 5.0 has), combined with the extra weight of the 5.0... It's been discussed here many times before, but apples to apples, the 5.0 is slower than the SOHC off the line.

5.0L AWD has 3.73 gears not 3.55 in my experience

Go get a few mods for your 5.0L and a shift kit for your trans.....then she will lose :)

Also your 5.0L is not a HO its a GT40p

As for getting a few mods.........again that takes money!
the main purpose of my purchase of the 5.0 is to have some more power than my wifes truck. Hense the V8!

as for the engine itself, it is HO and yes it is GT40P heads and Intake. I come from a stang world, and we constantly swapped our heads and intakes off the explorers. Its practically identical engine for an exception of ignition system and Tranny.
Other than those items i have yet found a difference in between the two.

When i compare the two trucks i did notice that 5.0 get a bit better milage on the highways. i would say it does 18-20mpg vs 16-18. Cant explain that but thats what i get. I do have MAC Intake and FMS HP plugs and wires on my Mounty. Im sure that helps a bit.:D

The explorer " high torque" truck grind camshaft is a bit different.
Which would make the explorer v8 different from an HO.

But we are arguing semantics here.
The v8 does have more power, but your 4 door is eating it up

Try her from a 29mph rolling start--:D

Unfortunately the SOHC stomps it even harder from a rolling start. From my experience I've raced a buddies 2000 5.0 AWD with 3.73lt and mine 97 4.0 SOHC with 3.55Open. No matter what happens I stomp the 5.0 on a rolling start harder then from a stand still. His gearing and higher amounts of tq take over off the line pulling him ahead by almost two car lengths, then when he shifts to second its all over and i'm already making up that length and more.

Like stated above some power adders will bring a halt to that, lol

i'll look at the manual. Ya, its crank horsepower but that is still going to be higher than just 180 hp. If you send your vin number to ford they will tell you.

The E type engine is only 5 less hp then the 5.0 and not that far away from the same torque numbers. The 5.0 will tow alot more though.
