ok, i have been searching through the forums and have found nothing on this. Does anyone know if it would be possible to put a 4.6 in the 1st gen sport tracs?
oh, well that just made everything harder, its near impossible to get ahold of a 302 around here, i live near gateway international speedway and there are way too many people looking for 302s for their strip car.
that website seems pretty good. has some of the best price i have seen. All the salvage yards around here want your first born child for a motor that they get to choose for you.:thumbdwn:
A 5.0L would be a drop in, but a 4.6L with the right amount of money and skillz wouldn't be impossible. SVO has experience putting a Cobra 4.6L in a 1985 Fox body Mustang.
We have the 1st generation Sport Trac's based on the 2nd generation regular Explorers. The 2nd generation Sport Trac's 07+ are based on the 3rd Generation regular Explorers(2002+) which are wider and have plenty of room for the 4.6L v8s.
The government had many 302 Explorers crushed the last couple of months. Not sure how that will hurt, but they have been pretty plentiful around here. I did the swap but I have not run across anyone else who has tackled it yet. I keep planning to do a build site for it, but have not had time. Your best bet is to get a wrecked v8 Explorer with a 302 and grab all the goodies.
The 302 is a tight fit and things were done differently to make it fit.
I wouldn't bother with the 4.6. Too much work. Better off buying a new one that already has one in it.
If anyone knows of anyone else who has done the 5.0 swap, let me know!
