4 cats on a ohv v6?

My '99 has 4 cats, is this normal? I wanna cut two out ( one is bad anyways) I have only heard of 2 on v6's

you got pics of this? I dont think the 6cyls had 4 cats.. I tihnk they had 2.. or maybe even 1.. now my 5.0L has 4.. and because of the o2 sensors, you can't remove any w/o going into open loop.. I think

.......why does no one belive me....... two seperate pipes, 2 cats on each & then they join near end of trans, they mite boyh go into muffler can't remeber.

nono, I didn't say I didn't beleive you, I just wanted to see it. I suppose its possible, but I could have sworn the 6 cyls had 2 or 1.. I am no authority on the 4.0s heh

if I were a l337 member I could attach some pics of mine, I have 2 sets of cats up by the headers.. then 2 more about a foot before the muffler.. this is 2 pipes all the way.. 1 muffler.. 2 pipes in and out (flow50 cat back system tho.. stock was 2 in 1 out)

ya, well if thats what yours sounds like, then yea, I suppose you do have 4 cats heh, as far as I know (dont quote me on this) but I think our exhaust systems have 4 o2s.. 2 before the cats, 2 after the cats, so you technically can't remove any of them w/o there being problems.. not w/o some o2 sims

My '97 SOHC and a co-worker's '98 SOHC (both Sports) only have two cats. One on each pipe between each manifold and the 2-inlet muffler. Single pipe coming out of the muffler.

4 cats on a V6



The V-6 usually have 2 cats on the forward exhaust section and 2 resonators attached to the tailpipe section.

You can remove anything you want downstream of the last cat or O2 sensor. You just cannot remove any emission equipment.

If you are sure that you are removing a resonator and not a cat, then you are okay with smog check.

My 95 has just one really big cat next to the tranny, looks like 2 separate ones but really just been modifried to fit the space. But then I also have EEC-IV and ODB-1 so I'm good for any kind of exhaust work.

I thought the OHV V6's had a single in/single out muffler. I thought the pipes came together up near the engine? You dont have the SOHC, do you? If not, they must have decided it was cheaper to just make one exhaust system for all 3 engines. Mine has 4 cats with a dual in muffler.

Chris, it must be something with the 4-door vs. 2-door then. Both my '97 SOHC Sport and a Co-worker's '98 SOHC Sport only have 2-cats. One on each pipe between the exhuast manifold and the 2-inlet muffler. I haven't looked under a '98 or newer 4-door though. My '97 Ford CD though only shows the V8 with 4 cats. The SOHC drawing is identical to mine and the OHV has two cats in a row going into the single inlet muffler.

Yeah, mine has 2 cats up near the engine which are right when the pipes come down to the lowest point and then 2 right next to eachother about 1' before the muffler. There was a resonator after the muffler when it was stock.

So apparently (at least in '98 & '99) you get a cat for each door. Mine's always getting stuck in the door anyway

On the registration, mine is listed as a 3 door utility vehicle.

Should I have 3 catalytic converters?
