400Hp

With true duals, intake, tune... you should be around 315rwhp. Your buddy has about 331rwhp. With the gears you should take him.

I would call up STS Turbo ( www.ststurbo.com ) and let them build you a kit. Will probably cost around $4500 though- but it can put you past the 400hp mark and sound WAY cooler that that SS. You can pretty much expect about a 50% increase with a turbo or supercharger at low boost levels. With higher boost or intercooling you can get lots more.

If you want to make the truck feel more powerful, you can have the drive-by-wire reprogrammed.

Justin, where do i get the drive by wire reprogramed?

any chip maker should able to do it- like maybe Bamachip?? The Ford Dealership did mine on my F150.

Maybe you can get a higher gear ratio. Your 6 speed has plenty of room for highway driving.

I would then get this:

http://www.kennebell.net/

Fab it on and get a good tune and run about 6psi or so... a nice conservative boost and she will run all day long with stock internals. That will get you into 400rwhp no prob.

Beef up the drivetrain. I really dont think you will have to do much more than some good axles and half shafts, you have a great tranny. Correct me if im wrong but its the same tranny as the Navigator, like a 6/100 (my 5 speed is only a 5/55). Much weaker.

Save up for some forged internals then get a good long block build, turn the boost way up.... your buddy wont see your smoke.

Of course you would need a bit of planning and buying a lot more parts than I mentioned...

If your not that much of a gearhead I suggest do the intake and exhaust upgrade I mentioned and a higher gear ratio. You will give your friend a good run for his money.

ok i have to questions. one, is the supercharger youre talking about the one for the 05+ mustangs?? and two, which one is better turbocharging or supercharging. if one costs more than the other then i dont mind spending more for one. i just want the one with the most power gains and the one that lasts a long time. or.... would it even be possible to supercharge and turbocharge because turbos use exhaust gasses and superchargers are pulley driven?

For you Gen4 V8 guys you would have to adapt the superchargers made for the S197 Mustang GT's (05+ model year) to fit your truck. Kenne Bell, Saleen, Whipple are a few makers who offer positive displacement superchargers that would be able to work with the Gen4 V8 Explorer's with some work.

As for whether a turbo or supercharger is better that depends on what you want. A turbo will almost always make more horsepower per pound of boost then the supercharger. The turbo and supercharger (positive displacement) will have two totally different types of powerbands. The turbo will be slightly less strong off the line but will pull like an absolute freight train from 3,000rpm's on up. The PD supercharger will have monster torque off the line and through the midrange but the power usually falls off a little bit in the upper range. The only way to counteract the power falloff in the upper range is to get one of the bigger PD superchargers as they can push allot of air while keeping things reasonably cool. Whether the turbo or the supercharger is better depends on what driving characteristics you are looking for in your truck.

Both are definitely doable on your truck. Both will require a little bit of custom work but it is not a huge deal in my eyes. Definitely not anything I recommend to a newer DIY mechanic or fabricator as a home project.

My biggest concern with adding that kind of power is the durability of the trans.

I think James may be of some assistance to you. He's got his dialed in pretty good. You obviously don't have to push your set-up to the extreme he has but he seems to have the skills...

Personally, I like turbo chargers better than superchargers, but that's only from reading, not experience.

That will be something you might have to address if your current transmission ends up not being able to withstand the power. Whether it comes to you swapping out to a built 5R55S or W transmission or built 4R70W transmission and running it standalone with a controller. I chose to swap to a built 4R70W in my Gen3 Explorer and run it standalone behind the built 4.6 with the Kenne Bell on it. You have some attractive options. If you plan to only run 400 hp but find that your current trans isn't up to snuff then swap to a 5R55S and run standalone. Planning to run 500-600 hp then get that 5R55S built. If you plan to go for 700+ hp like me then you will want to get a built 4R70W as it is the strongest.

Modding your vehicle for bigger power is a system of compromises. Price durability, ease of installation, and availability are just a few factors that come into the picture.

It is best to ride in both a turbo and a supercharged vehicle so that you get a feel for how each one drives. That will help you make a better informed decision. Reading about it just doesn't give you enough of an idea to make a well informed decision when it comes to your preference.

I second the nitrous recommendation. Do the basic bolt-ons like intake, exhaust, gears, MAF, throttle body, etc, and throw a 125 shot on it and be done. Just be smart with it.

there is no replacement for displacement as quoted by a friend
The trailblazer SS is a 6.0L lt1 (same as corvettes) good luck hes 400 stock hp mod for mod it will always win, i say challenge him off road lol

Not always true but displacement sure as heck does help.

By the way the TBSS does not have a 6.0 LT1 it has the 6.0 LS2 engine. The LT1 was a much older generation of GM motor and was 5.7 liters in displacement.

Just curious but you do realize that you just replied to a thread who's last post was over a year ago...

Yeah havent you ever heard of a Formula-1 engine :p: -- 700 to 780 hp from half the displacement of the Ford 5.0 block (2.4L) .

Hey there was no mention of any RPM parameter/restriction. Plus its all naturally aspirated :)

The trans would like that I'm sure, spin it ten grand.

I wonder what he did, no updates?

I think those F1 engines rev closer to 18 grand don't they?

Yeah, I was just tossing out a number that a trans would not work well with.

How have you been Rob, very busy I hope? How is your truck doing, and the 4R70W?

I gotcha Don.

I have been doing more or less well. Got restationed down in Gulfport, MS again so that has been a large transition as of late. I had to travel lightly because the wife and kid had to stay up north with the house so I only could take one vehicle. The Explorer just isn't a sensible enough of a vehicle anymore to have made the cut. hehe. The G8 GT is down here with me for the next few years while the Exploder sits up north at the house awaiting my return so that I can complete Phase 3. I probably could have finished it up before I left but since I knew I would have to be away from the family for months at a time I thought it best to concentrate on spending time with them the last few months I was there. One day the X will be done to my satisfaction....one day.... ;)

Very good, family is priority one, and you cherish that. :salute:

I've got my 4R70W all apart, and I bought so many new parts that the aftermarket units don't look so expensive now.
