410Custom's builds a 2007 Ranger V8 - custom truck build - Project "Ranger Premier"

@410Fortune I've been looking at your exhaust system pictures on page 25 post # 484. You mentioned a good spot for the wideband o2 sensor.
Do you have another group of pictures in your thread somewhere that would show it installed? Your install pictures are helping me
as I work on the exhaust on my project. Thanks.

Absolutely! Post 482 is where the exhaust build starts post 501 details the 02 bung placement and install, the perfect location lol

There are some updates coming I will be posting in the next couple of days super excited to finish this sucker

You can see our ancient cedar stump hollowed out and filled with soil, planted an apple tree in it. The moose cannot reach it so it’s thriving
King Arthur to God- "Good idea Lord!"
Lord to King Arthur- "Course it's a good idea!"

I especially dig the front on look. Rugged w/o being imposing.
Have just spent almost 2 hours catching up & going down this rabbit hole & will pay for it sweating like a pig out in the sun by the time chores get done.
Thanks Jamie!😁🤪😈

It’s 7 am nice and cool in the mornings. Not so much in a few hours! I’m so glad to be back in the woods along the river much cooler back here… but we are still running the ac. Glad you are caught up! Just in time to see me finish this bad boy

Yuup still cool here, running the shutter fan until temp gets down to 63, then button her up, and flip to HVAC.

Yahoo! Thread activity, was starting to get worried. Not quite the post I was hoping for (pictures of progress) but still good news.

Yuup still cool here, running the shutter fan until temp gets down to 63, then button her up, and flip to HVAC.
Flipping HVAC on at 63? I wish. Not that I have HVAC available in the shop space, but if I did I'd be happy if it pulled the temperature down to the high 70s or low 80s.

Feels like this guy around here: :angryfire:

Seriously if you ain't careful out there you'll be this guy: :dead:

Yet for some dumb reason I couldn't wait for the weather to cool off before swapping the new engine into my Ranger. Mid 90s+ with a humidity of 90% or higher ain't fun and the temps are still rising. Fortunately I only get a couple hours per day after work to wrench, so it's hard to overdo it.

guess whos back
and at it again!
FINALLY!!!!!!!! all the small things

Plan is to have truck ready to go home in two weeks or less
It has been a *****in summer, crazy busy, full of work and all sorts of madness
BUT its now time to get in the shop and finish!!!!
I have lots of pics to post

Let’s start with the bed and bedsides install

truck was again driven outside and power washed also scrubbed by hand, (I had to get all of the mudd off the frame before i put the bed on)
detail wax was used, driven back in and let dry

IMG_2004.jpeg

I picked up the metal bed box for its first trial fit

Before you guys ask.........98 ranger project in background, will be my sons first truck :) also is my 1952 Ford Tudor hotrod project...these projects all on hold waiting for me to finish up "ol blue"
shes a 98 step side, 4 door cab, came to me with a bad 4.0 OHV and a spare ohv in the bed

now shes a 98 stepside 4 door with a 06 front clip, and a 04 mazda b4000 sohc drivetrain and 04 mazda interior! She's running now using the 04 PCM thanks to my buddy PATS was deleted from the computer and she fired right up. I kept the 98 truck side wiring harness and worled my magic
Features will include aside from the 125K mile SOHC auto 4wd drivetrain, 04 cluster and 07 ranger seats, 04 Mazda charcoal interior, 06 wheels, 246/16 tires, and custom paint. More on that truck later...

back to the bed going on
if you remember I chopped much metal out of the way to fit the bedsides
we also prepped and painted remaining background surfaces blue to match
this is a black bed from a 02 Ranger
cherry picker is very handy for test fitting things
IMG_2005.jpeg

IMG_2006.jpeg

In position

IMG_2007.jpeg

The rear chevy shackle setup will hit the bed, only slightly, if I left it like this. I was hoping to avoid this by using some shorter shackles (1" shorter, 1/2" of lift) but those shackles would not clear the Kartek spring hangers
So the bed must be trimmed, no biggie.....the grinder was needed for all the finishing work anyways

IMG_2008.jpeg

IMG_2009.jpeg

time to remove whats left of the old bedsides
I ground out the 11 spot welds on each side, ground flush and removed the jagged pieces both sides

IMG_2010.jpeg

IMG_2011.jpeg

marked the spot welds with sharpie, hit them with grinder, pulled and pried metal piece until it broke free

IMG_2012.jpeg

IMG_2013.jpeg

grind all spots flush
IMG_2014.jpeg

Now time to trim for shackles, cleanup all metal edges, do final trimming, and then treat all exposed metal with rust stopper

IMG_2015.jpeg

IMG_2016.jpeg

IMG_2018.jpeg

More

under bed trimmed to clear suspension as it cycles
IMG_2023.jpeg

All edges cleaned with grinder, file, permatex rust treatment brushed on to any rust prone or exposed edges. I love this stuff

IMG_2024.jpeg

Rustoleum truck bed coating added to inner bedsides

IMG_2025.jpeg

Sourced some 2" wheel spacers for the rear axle
This will space out rear wheels so the track width will more closely match the front mid travel suspension
ran these through the parts washer, its good to have lots of ranger parts
IMG_2027.jpeg

more metal work on pass side, smooth edges, treat with rust stop, then paint, then finally test fit bedsides on truck
IMG_2033.jpeg

IMG_2034.jpeg

IMG_2035.jpeg

IMG_2026.jpeg

IMG_2036.jpeg

IMG_2037.jpeg

added truck bed coating

IMG_2038.jpeg

IMG_2042.jpeg

and now finally the fiberglass was carefully fit and installed to metal box

much work to do around tailgate hardware and tail lights, this is typical of glass bedside install. trim trim trim and touch up paint

The moment we have all been waiting for
A semi complete truck!

Front suspension will need to come up, adjust the coilovers

the front edge/part of the glass (between bed and cab) needed a small fastener. I am using all stainless hardware to attach the glass
Holes carefully marked and drilled
Always start drilling fiberglass in reverse...to get through the paint and gel coat. This helps prevent cracking

IMG_2043.jpeg

IMG_2039.jpeg

sides test fit

IMG_2045.jpeg

clearance for the shackles, no problem now

GOOD DOG

IMG_2046.jpeg

first bolts are in, glass is now being attached final...

SHE IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BADASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Will have to wash it again and then final buff and detail
tailgate and gas door, tail lights install coming up next...but check out this stance!

No, the wheel spacers are not on yet

IMG_2053.jpeg

IMG_2056.jpeg

IMG_2044.jpeg

IMG_2051.jpeg

IMG_2053.jpeg

IMG_2055.jpeg

sides not bolted on yet, they still get pulled tighter after these pics were taken
bumper was also adjusted up slightly to help with bodylines

I LOVE the transformation, the wheels fit in the wheel arches perfectly and there is nothing like a ranger with full glass :)

im gonna be that guy. needs a tube rear bumper.
Can I Get an I'm with stuipd smilie here? (EDIT: ...or with that typing, maybe I'm the stupid one...)

Needs something, that stock bumper hangs too low for those bed sides. I'd guess that Jamie or Eddie Money already have plans in work for that.

Maybe a 4" pipe "air tank" bumper hooked to a little under bed 12 volt compressor for "emergency air for tires" situation? Just an idea.
We use a rust stopper product at work, and it is not called that but has the same results. Monday I will get the name of it.
I'm continually impressed! Great job! This has been a great transformation to follow. I know that you and @EddieMoney are very proud
of "RANGER PREMIER".

Imo the rear bumper should be fabricated to match the front bumper and side rails
They are never truly done! Will it get a bed cage with all sort of camping gadgets and a spare tire canopy kitchen fuel storage air supply spare part pull behind trailer made from the old bed? Who knows!?!

Lol
It wasn’t my idea!!

(But I like it very much)

Thank you

Looks like you got hungry while working on the truck and decided to gnaw along the edge of the old bed side. 😆

Ranger looks awesome. You should be proud of your hard work. Time spent is really showing. Very nice indeed.

I like that, subtle. Make it strong but not huge and rigid straight to the frame. Keep a decent gap from the bumper to the bed, to flex a little. Give it somewhere to crush(fold up between the outside and the frame).

Allright here we go
One more week of chaos finishing up all loose ends and then she is going home!!! Time to put some miles on this rig

The bedsides have been finalized
The tailgate and hardware have been fitted
The tail lights have been fitted
The fuel door was mounted
This was not a job for the faint of heart.......... bedsides on a ranger like this.....well it was a chore! But it came out *****in

I have a VERY SHORT list of things to complete, but an important one
in the next week we are doing final cut and buff of paint, adjusting the front suspension height, and getting an alignment.
King bump stops and cans will be setup
I am planning to put 50-60 miles on the rig to ensure no surprises

Lots of other little things.........

Here we go!

first up you guys did not think I was gonna leave the cluster like this....did you?
img_1603-jpeg.jpg

No no that was a trail run
I picked up some super high quality printer paper and spent some time with the text on the computer
I wanted to match the theme of the white gauges a little better and make something that would pop
Here is the result

IMG_2057.jpeg

IMG_2058.jpeg

IMG_2059.jpeg

IMG_2060.jpeg

IMG_2249.jpeg

The graphic is attached to a piece of foam, some cardboard, and a piece of black plastic I painted white. The photo paper was centered on the whole assembly in the window and then held in place final with some hvac tape and a couple of dabs of e3000 hobby glue. I covered the photo paper with clear packing tape (believe
It or not), in order to protect it and make it shine. It came out awesome! Very pleased
The graphic and mount assembly was sealed into the cluster with more
HVAC tape so it will stay dust free and never move

A little reminder of all the work that went into this sucker every time you check your gauges ;)

Mounting a tailgate with fiberglass bed sides….

First had to visit the old stock bed to grab all the hardware we need
One bolt stripped and I had to cut it off… fun
IMG_2184.jpeg

This is what we are starting with, what remains of the factory box and tail lights now wrapped with McNeil glass. We have lots of trimming to do each bedside was carefully marked measured and the lifted and cut for clearance. There is barely enough room for a factory tailgate between the new glass sandwich,’let along a tailgate that has 1/8”
Of linex wrapping the top. The glass must be trimmed properly to clear all hardware and pulled in tight to the metal
IMG_2187.jpeg

Im
Lucky to have the help of my neighbor for this work, he is a craftsman and handling these bedsides alone … we’ll get yourself a second set of hands and a second brain
IMG_2188.jpeg

Lots of trimming car required to get the sides to fit tight enough
Multi tool with mason bit works wonders here, then all edges filed by hand and will get touch up paint

IMG_2189.jpeg

Neighbor is very good with metal here he is flattening some under edges for a proper fit
IMG_2190.jpeg

Final trimming
IMG_2192.jpeg

Now that the sides are flat enough for tailgate clearance a template was made from another ranger to help
Locate the hinges and hardware
IMG_2193.jpeg

Could finally final drill the mounting holes along the inside edge. All stainless hardware here, 5 bolts per side when we were done. The bedsides can be removed with 7 bolts each (Not including fuel fill and lights)
IMG_2194.jpeg

More Trimming
IMG_2198.jpeg

Done, tailgate fits phew
Touch up paint needed but luckily, most of this will get linex and cover any ugly (reference pic 1, linex on factory bed)

Next is the tail lights
We have some really nice red led tails for this truck, they were the perfect choice in my Opinion. “Tinted” would look good too but not as good as these. A matching 3rd brake light cargo light, I’m told is coming! Thay is the first mod I would do when I got her home also!

First I test fit an old set of crappy ranger tails
With the fiberglass now wrapped over the metal you have to trim some from the backside of the tails for them to sit
Flush

IMG_2197.jpeg

Again multi tool perfect for trimming plastic

Once I was happy with the flush ness we trimmed the new lights
IMG_2204.jpeg

IMG_2246.jpeg

As a result this cavity was opened… not good this would allow dust and debris and water into the housing
IMG_2247.jpeg

Not on my watch! Small piece of black abs plastic and liberal amount of permatex seal it up

IMG_2199.jpeg

Have to drill new holes for tail light screws and clips. When drilling fiberglass with a gel coat all holes are started in reverse.. once you get through the gel coat you can switch to regular rotation on the drill. This helps prevent cracking

Tail lights both fit
Not perfect, fiberglass never is…
Bed was centered and spaced from
Cab even and then final Bolted to frame

Tail lights were wired and reverse trigger wire for reverse camera added
More on that later

Fuel door and filler neck. This was a first for me.. the mcneil glass hole for the filler neck was not round. I had to get a 2-3/8” hole saw to finish it. I have about every size of hole saw there is but not 2-3/8
This was tricky had to hold it steady by hand and run it backwards:.. it worked

Fuel door was carefully placed, holes marked and drilled. Factory hardware re use
Color match is excellent.. this is the factory fuel door and tailgate vs the paint we did on the glass… very well done by our paint supplier!
IMG_2202.jpeg

IMG_2207.jpeg

IMG_2224.jpeg

5 bolts per side spaced evenly attach glass to factory box.

There are two ways to install full glass bedsides on a ranger, remove the factory pinch welds thus removing the entire factory side or leaving some factory
Metal underneath and wrapping the metal with the glass.
We did method two…why? Because it
Leaves a much stronger cargo Box and huge support for the glass. As a result of this the bed now appears about 1/4” (thickness of the glass) raised above the factory cab and body lines. We had to move the tailgate hinges up to their highest points in the factory adjustment slots
The tail lights also had to be rigged and new holes drilled for all 4 screws, factory holes are 1/4” away

In the future the factory rubber cab mounts can be replaced w urethane and a soacer can be used to line things back up perfectly

work in progress! Don’t expect fiberglass to be perfect, it is really designed for race trucks. We get it as close as we can

And now for the pics!! The result it awesome!

Keep in mind she’s not washed… Final cut and buff is Monday
IMG_2208.jpeg

Oh I almost forgot, I sourced some 2” wheel spacers from our parts collection lol cleaned them up… now the rear axle track width closely matches the front
IMG_2027.jpeg

IMG_2209.jpeg

This truck has a serious “presence” about it… she is quite stunning in person.

To Open the door and see the seats, console, shifter controls cameras screens and mods…. It feels a lot newer than a 2006 build date ranger. To start the engine and watch the Holley come to life and the sound of the cam and true duals… well you guys it’s one sick ass ranger we have created here

Now to drive it a bunch

IMG_2205.jpeg

After spacers
Lights were adjusted, tailgate adjusted, bed adjusted, fuel door adjusted, bed side supports made fuel filler mounted and I vacuumed the ac system
IMG_2213.jpeg

Boom!
