5.0 Sport Trac Swap

Hey guys sorry to turn direction but I need a little help with the manual tcase swap. I have a opertunity to grab a 97-03 manual with all shifter parts. My question is I read something somewhere about the 4406 having a viscous clutch. I thought they were all manual and if not I will go a different route. Any help would be really appreciated thank you.

None of them have a viscous clutch. Some of them are Torque On Demand like the V6s. I don’t think the TOD style were available in manual shift.

Ditto, there were evidently three versions over the many years along the 90's and 2000's. The manual version with shift linkage is what you are after, I think you have it and are fine to grab that. The other main one is the TOD type, with a shift motor on the back of it. The manual version won't have any hole/provision for a shift motor on its back. I don't recall what is the 3rd version, but I'd expect it's closer to the TOD units, and those all use an internal magnetic clutch, not a viscous clutch.

The viscous clutch is a sealed unit inside a transfer case, and it has its own internal fluid. The TOD and late model stuff now, all use a magnetic clutch I call similar to an AC clutch. Those seem to hold well, but I've never looked into how strong or reliable they are for long term use etc.

I also responded to all of his PM's about this t case
