2000 explorer 5.0
hey everyone, started another 302 swap. some of you may remember i did a carb'd 302 swap and a c6 in a lifted 92 explorer a few years ago, but i really didnt like running the carb'd motor. So.... I started all over again. picked up a 94 explorer a few months back. rust free 4 door with 80k original miles on it!! I was driving across town last week and saw a rolled over 2000 explorer with an awd v8 sitting in someones yard and stopped to ask about it, and $500 later i had myself the perfect donor vehicle with only 82K miles on it, and its even got headers on it!! Just started working on the truck this morning about 6am. pulled out the 302 and tranny as one unit from the 2000. and got the 4.0, crappy a4ld, and t-case out of the 94 by around 2:00. gutted the entire engine bay of the 94, and set the 302 in place. totally forgot i had to chop the heater box to clear the valve cover, but that was no big deal. motor and tranny are now in place, and basically ready to start being hooked up. now im trying to figure out how to wire this thing into my dash and make the dash work, and how to rewire the dash to plug in the new computer. would it be easier to simply put the dash out of the 2000 in? really need some input on how to wire this thing.

thanks, and any input is GREATLY apreciated

So wait-you started at 6 am and already have the v8 set in?

I am still tying to get my head around that--wow. Good work.

well this is the 5th time ive swapped a v8 into a ranger/explorer. BUT This is the first time ive gone fuel injected, and that is what is going to kick my ass.

last time I swapped a v8 was into a 96 ranger. started with the 4 cyl and a 5 speed at 10pm, and by 2:00 the next afternoon it had a 347 and a c4, and was drivable.

damn. ive been wantin to do this to my 92 xlt explorer! any tips or suggestions? I find 302's, 351's, and c4's and c6's all the time for cheap around here but I have no idea what to do first or how about going to get it done, especially as quick as you do it haha.

So how do I get around this pats key issue and the vehicle security that this 5.0 has? Thinkin about getting rid of the coil packs and putting in a distributor, then I can use a painless harness for a mustang 5.0. Any suggestions? No progress this week, really busy with work.

Look at 410fortune's thread......

You can also use a 97 ECM, as they weren't PATS...there are some minor wiring changes from there...but that is the easiest way

Ryan

i bought a piggy back style chip that took away PATS and secondary O2 sensors i think it was from SCT much easier than trying to wire it out.

Yep...with a tune you can delete PATS also...but that does require a tuner....

WOW!! That is pretty cool, been working on mine for almost 2 yrs and still not even close. I don't have a garage or anywhere warm to work on it in the winter. You need to come down to Kansas and finish mine.

what kind of mpg do you get with the fuel injected v8 as opposed to the stock engine?

I get better mileage with my V8 (TMH's, TF Spacer) than I do with my V6....although the V6 is 4WD, vs the V8's 2WD

Alright,no more 5.0 swap. Some really not smart guy gave me 2k$ for the 302,tranny,and t-case,for a ranger swap. I couldn't say no. So I got a jasper reman 4.0 with 40k on it, and a brand new tranny. I'm going to build the 4.0 and dump it in the truck. I'm thinking; cam,headers,injectors,port/polished intake, bbk tb, new maf, electric fan, spacer between upper and lower intake ( which I made last night in welding class). Any other good go fast stuff I can do?

Take the CPU outta the donor!! Also, I would take the dash parts out too, and put them in to your project. Make life and getting it running a lot easier!

LOL $2000 is not bad actually, but he sghould have known he could pick up a 5.0L explorer whole truck for $500 these days

Nice way to make $1500!!

can we get some pics. I been wanting to do the 5.0 swap for a while on my 94. I dont know how much longer the 4.0 will last 240,000 on it still all original.
