79 Mustang, new daily driver?

thanks! :D

It's gonna be a long process, but it will be worth it!

And I pulled the tank, it was VERY clean (inside)! I got it down with some help of a friend. I couldn't get the bolts off holding the straps in. they turned in place instead of holding still. A trick I figured out is hold a BIG flathead screwdriver against the top of the bolt to keep it from spinning, and hit it with a deep socket and an impact wrench. I believe its 15mm. the first bolt I had to cut with a die grinder cuz I didn't realize the trick to it ;) I had a jack under it so I didn't have to hold it. as you let it down, pull the filler neck out of its hole and make sure the hoses and such are disconnected and out of the way. my friend had to go to work, so getting it back on was a challenge. I had to balance it on the floor jack, raise it up, and coax the filler neck into the hole, all at the same time. I'm sure it looked awesome! if someone was there to take a picture, I wouldn't have had to look so silly....
put in new stainless carriage bolts w/ nylocks and hooked it all back in!

and I was a little frustrated when I did the oil. That darn filter is in a TERRIBLE place!!!!

For everyone that needs to change the oil filter on a ford 2.3 turbo, the only way in and out with it is over the front K member!!!!

it took me a while to find that out. My grandpa has an oil filter relocator somewheres hes gonna give me. that will be nice!

Whew! after digging around I finally found your EVAP charcoal canister, PM me an address and I'll get this out to you in a day or so.

Jeff - :navajo:

how hard is it to pull one of those gas tanks, and how long did it take? i should do mine. the fuel is only about 6 years old. also, for your own sake, your tank should be one of the ones with the fuel sending unit, and screen at the bottom of the tank (unless i am wrong and jeff corrects me :D) TRY not to damage it. i know i have looked all around for one of those (not lately mind you) and as far as i know, no one makes them. the only ones i could find where the ones with the sending unit on top.

Not hard to pull, but good point most of the 1979 to 1982 stuff is getting harder and harder to find, and not nearly enough of it is getting reproduced.

I have even pushed this with someone who does some of the reproductions, and because of the supply and lack of demand it will either be a while or not at all on getting some of the things we need.

Jeff - :navajo:

thats dumb! if just one company ventured to make the stuff, even if just for a short time, they could make bank! oh well. such is life.

I'm gonna be picking up my wheels and tires today, and maybe starting on the vacuum spaghetti.

got the wheels and tires! $150 bucks for stock ten-holes. I'll get some more/better pictures pretty soon.

for anyone who's intersted heres my build thread on FEP:
http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthread.php?t=81651

pretty much the same thing, but without all of the awesome technical info! :p:

lots to do still. Hopefully I'll get off work early tomorrow and get some work done on the Stang.

Tim knows what happened today, another one followed me home

its like a lost little puppy that follows you home, but requires a lot more care and maintenance! :p:

thats AWESOME!!! info give us info! we need to know more!

Update: today was a lazy and lethargic day. I got a little more of the vacuum lines replaced but the weather has made a turn for the crap. I am almost done with the vac lines and still need to order the brakes. after that I need to make a decision on what I'm gonna do with the exhaust. I am either going to remove the cat myself and have a muffler shop replicate the tips, or I'm gonna replace the whole thing after the turbo. it all depends on the condition of the existing pipes. it also needs a voltage regulator which I may get tomorrow.

Once that evap canister shows up I'll be able to tune it up and get it running smooth! I may not need to replace plugs or coils or anything like that as it was rebuilt shortly before it sat. I am prepared for replacing everything, so we'll see how it goes.

Ok, just a little bit since I don't wanna hyjack the thread here........

Uggh! poor car, well I saved it, but it's had a bit of a worn life, it clocked almost 180+k miles, it's looking more like an "L" and not a "GL" model.

In 1982 there weren't split fold rear seats it's a 3.3 (200cid) straight sixxer, or small block six, especially compared to the 4.9 I have in my Flareside.

It runs but needs a tune up, all of it is there except for the smog pump and diverter valve which I have both, the interior well I'll let the picture speak for that, it does have the sport steering wheel in it and intermittent wipers, all the body panels are original, and has never been in a major wreck, there is a small dent on the deck lid and one by the gas door.

the car is clean on the under side with no rust, even in the typical spots, although upon closer inspection, the sun roof has a little around it, and the bag for the sun roof is in really nice shape, nicer than the whole car.

He gave me an extra tail lamp assy for the broken one, they hacked the dash to put an aftermarket radio in it :( the front and rear bumper covers are torn and need to be replaced, headlamp switch is missing, but other than that it's all there, and not too bad for the life it's had.

AND it has the factory Ford rear window louvers!!

NOW what to do with it............................

I have a 1988 T-bird Turbo coupe I just bought that has slight front end damage, so out comes the drivetrain, wiring, PCM, seats, cooling system, swap in the V-8/4 cylinder K-Member from a Mustang,I have here at the house and drop all the Turbo Coupe stuff in it!!
Put in a set of "take out" Eibach sport springs, a set "take out" 1986 GT anti roll bars, find some poor guy who can't get rid of his traction lock 7.5 rear axle with slapper bars, take the extra set of 1987/88 turbine wheels or 10 holes I have and put slicks on them all the way around and autocross and road race it, well with a few of doodads.

OK here are the pictures CAUTION not for the faint of heart!!

And now back to your regularly scheduled thread

Jeff -

And it has Eddie Bauer floor mats too

how come you don't want to put the 8.8 from the coupe in, or is it bent up? i don't know jeff, that thing doesn't look as bad as you where saying when we talked earlier. know i have to get pic of the capri!

lacky01, if i where you, i would just replace the exhaust. you have to remember, its 30 years old. lots of heat cycles have gone through it. that and i am sure it doesnt look so pretty anymore, and i also doubt anyone is going to frown on that.

SVO- that car looks like its gonna be loads of fun! it doesn't seem like that bad of condition. but the hacked up dash is a bit of a bummer :(

and don't worry, its only hi-jacking if were discussing explorers! theres other forums for that ;)
my car doesn't have any thread worthy updates, so we might as well talk about your car.

Vroom- the only issue I have with replacing the exhaust is the money factor. add on to that my incredible impatience and you can see the dilema. at the moment, my line of thinking is to run the car as is until I can afford to do the exhaust right. I'll cut the cat out and simply gas weld a temp pipe in, and try to get those tips made. once I have the new tips and the old are off to SVO, I'll decide on a muffler. this is rather difficult cuz I have no idea what I WANT. my grandpa has some glasspaks laying around that he would give me. although it would sound rather ricey, it wouldn't sound awful and I'd save some moolah. or I could buy a flowmaster or magnaflow and get that deeper sound, albeit spending more money. I don't really mind the cost, I just don't know which way I wanna go.

either way, the exhaust will be fabbed out of Stainless steel. I don't want to have to mess with it again.

on another note, I checked prices of brake parts at Stuarts. there was only one option for the front brakes, and two for the rear. the drums were either 9" or 10" and I know I have the 9. the fronts however, I'm concerned about since it seems like there are different rotor sizes depending on your engine and stuff. I keep reading that the TRX suspension was different enough than whatever other suspension was available that the parts didn't interchange. should I be concerned that there was only one option at the parts store? none of the items were in stock, so I can't just take the parts to them to match.

thanks for stickin' with me guys, the questions will probably get more obscure as time goes on...

well "I" feel left out, so "I" will post pictures of my find!

83 merc capri for the wallet breaking price of $250 canadian! (hey i live in canada, so what can i say :D)

this is where they go

and down here, vacuum tree?

and what the random is this wire?

the new one:

the difference between the two is overall height and the way the plug needs to be shaped. did I get the wrong part?

0906091822.jpg

well those are all of my current set-backs. oh and I forgot to mention time and money. not enough of those around either

and don't be shy about sharing your four-eyes, I can't get enough!

rather important question I dont want overlooked. sorry if I seem pushy, I'm new. I'm also rather bewildered at how many 5.0 options there are as opposed to ANY other engine :fart:

ok boys, I took the plunge. ordered new rotors and bearings and seals. they'll be in tomorrow.

0908091855.jpg

I also got the voltage regulator figured out. they originally sold me some cheap knock-off replacement, but I enforced the finding of real parts :p: that will also be here tomorrow.

I also talked with a guy about making replacement exhaust tips for $90!!! :D

It's gonna be made out of stainless steel and will be very identical to the original. I'll probably be doing that next week if not the week after.

I also took a good look at the cat. It is gonna be a PITA!! its not straight, so I can't just cut it out. were gonna have to gas weld a few curved pieces together to make the bend. I've decided the existing exhaust is in good enough shape to keep it for a while. once I get the whole thing restored I'll shell out for the real deal. but it'll be fine for now.

So:
exhaust --- in progress
brakes --- almost
engine --- in progress
cancer --- in progress
interior --- in progress
starter sys--- check
paint --- yeah right!

while your doing your brakes, look at the rubber houses that your calipers are HANGING FROM!!!! :nono: (that is a no no, but I'm just as guilty as you, I've done it in the past as well). make sure they aren't all cracked up, or look dry roted.

oh, no worries. The only reason they're hanging by them is cuz they're already cracked. as soon as a moved the caliper away from the rotor I saw the crack in the line. so now its a convenient coat hangar
