Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a 1979 - 1981 "Draw Through" turbo set-up like the 1981 301 Turbo Trans Am, the air/fuel mixture is "drawn" through the turbo before being forced through the intake, it has a progressive two barrel Weber carburetor that sits on the intake manifold that also houses the turbocharger, it is a non-water cooled, non-intercooled set-up that make about 5 psi of boost.

Too many of you are too used, or too young, and only remember the 1983 - 1988 EFI Turbo set-ups that were non-intercooled (1983-1984 Turbo GT's, 1983-1986 T-Birds, 1985-1989 XR4Ti's) and intercooled (1984-1986 Mustang SVO, 1987-1988 T-Birds)

DO NOT try and make more boost, it will not only hurt the motor, but it will quickly diminish the life of the turbo, these turbo's also NEED a cool down before shutting off the car, that's one of the reasons these turbo's die so often.

This car, stock made 140hp.

And be sure the timing is set correctly on this car, as preignition detonation will also kill the head gasket if not the pistons.

I'll tell you this, that car is worth way more money if you put it back together bone stock, and drive/show it, you will be much more respected, and the value of the car can only go up, if you start to molest it, and "Hot Rod" this car, the value will greatly drop in a heart beat, from the photos it's complete there under the hood, there are people like me whom would kill for some of the original parts under that hood (if not the whole car), to fix/finish some restorations.

You have a car of rare and dieing breed.

That's just my $.02

BTW, you might have killed the alternator, when hooking the battery up, and possibly popped some fuses.

Good Luck with your project sir.

THATS THE INFORMATION I"VE BEEN LOOKING FOR!!!!!!!

and I know the rule about caps, I really was yelling :D

I've been pouring through tech forums for the last couple days and can only find:
"can I put a turbo on my 2.3?"
"how can I get more boost?"
"my car wont start!"
"are we there yet?"
"which bigger turbo should I buy next?"

bunch o' crap.

Thank you a bunch for that post! I really do plan on keeping it all stock. with 140 horses, 4 speed stick, and its Ford reliability, there is absolutely no reason to change anything. I have been thinking about aftermarket sound cuz I don't yet know if the original even puts out any sound. I'd like to keep it stock, but I really like having 4-ways and a sub. I could always not mess with the ponys system and just use my truck for the audio toys. why screw up a rare car?

If, after I wash it real good and buff it out, I decide that it needs painted, would I ruin its value to repaint? if I did repaint I would be painting it myself. the real-deal automotive style. NO RATTLE CANS!! *nothing against it, I just happen to have the means to do otherwise* would it be wise to paint back to factory? or could I do custom?

and thanks for the tip about the other electronics, I'll have to make sure I didn't screw anything up. and my first step is gonna be buying a solenoid and battery, testing the starter, and trying to get her started. my only road-block is my Grandpa. He needs to decide if hes gonna give me the necessary funds to get it going, or if he's gonna let me have the car and pay for it myself. He's too cheap to spend any real money on it, and he doesn't want to give it away. I don't have a ton of cash, but I would definitely spend it all on this project, so long as my Ex is still runnin and my bills are gettin paid!

I also need time  I'm workin almost full time, I'm starting Ground School in a couple weeks, I start guitar lessons next Tuesday, and I have a video project that needs edited.

I have a wedding to plan, a wife to murder, and Gilder to blame for it. I'm swamped! :D

oh, and I'm super stoked that it IS a turbo.
I have no plans for power-adders. Its gonna need full exhaust, the tail-pipes rotted off and are sitting on the rear floor. I'll use OEM replacement filters. all of the glass is good. the glove compartment is FULL of rodent bedding, made mostly of the paperwork that happened to be left in there. I have not checked to see if anything is still living in it, but I'm in no hurry to find out. I didn't get anything done today cuz the rest of the bees found out they were homeless this morning. they were less than thrilled.

I'm very happy to see your going to keep the car stock, and that your really willing to do it right for the most part.

Painting it original is the best route to go, and believe it or not, that brownish/copper color is actually bad ass looking if it done right.

As for the audio, Fords systems back then were not the greatest, but if you don't mind your super high end system being in your other vehicle I'll give you some tips on what I did.

Ford did produce a factory premium sound system, with an amplifier "pull down" switch where your right knee would be under the bottom part of the dash, although crappy by today's standards, what I have done was to purchase an FM modulated 10disc changer by Sony and plugged it into the radio antenna for the system and replaced all the factory speakers with updataded units that fit the application perfectly (3 1/4" in the dash and 5"x7" in the rear quarter panels) still not the most stellar of sound systems but it does give you some cruising tunes to jam to, and still appears stock of all others gandering into the vehicle, I get compliments all the time about having a factory radio, and enough so to justify the $90 I paid on Evil Bay for the head unit, and another as a back-up, but it will actually be used in the 1979 restoration I have here, besides the fact you will have to actually cut the dash assy on that vehicle to make any DIN style work, which will ruin the dash assy unless you buy/find and old school shaft style radio, I still have a few here.

I noticed in the pics it actually looks like he has an after market radio in it already, and yes Ford put out quite a few systems back in the day so probably about 4-5 head units, including 8 Tracks, were optioned back then.

The TRX wheel and tire package is rare and expensive, rare that people are trying to find the wheels again cause everybody threw them away because of the metric tires, the 190-55-390's where stock on your car, the 220-55-390's came on the later 1983-1984 cars, and you can still get them through Tire Rack, OR just pick up a set of 10 hole, 1985-1986 GT/LX wheels that every body is dumping, like what's on my little LX:

P6030452.jpg

People on Craig's List or local Mustanger's practically give these wheels away, and since their 15" wheels, the 225-60-15's or wider are still under $100 per-tire.

Also another option, and the lightest factory optioned wheel is the turbine, 1987-1988 GT wheel, which was also later optioned on the rare limited production build, 7Up convertible Mustang of 1992 (I believe the date is right), I picked up a set of these wheels for free for our 1979 restoration, because they look just like the 14" steel wheels with the turbine hub caps, and I got a single wheel for $15 off Craig's List for a full size spare.

Now for the bad news, most all the parts are obsolete, the bumper covers, the out side belt molding, the tail lamp assy (1979 to 1982), the map light if so equiped, hood, cowl vent, any trim that is chrome, including mirrors, louver's are kinda hard to find (I just went through this problem), shift boots, the console delete shifter cover/e-brake cover, Cobra interior emblems, all the door panels, and interior quarter trim panels, the factory 2.5" twin tipped exhaust tail pipe, the seat material (I'll give you a link for someone to contact), since the best selling Fox Body was the 1987-1993, and the second best was the 1985-1986 most of all restoration parts are geared towards these vehicles, this means like myself you will have to search long and hard through salvage yards, peoples back yards, Craig's List, Evil Bay, and some forums like www.foureyedpride.com for some of the parts.

Lemme tell you right now take the forums I linked up above with a grain of salt, they think they know everything, but they don't, some of their mom's were nothing more than my one night stands and were not alive back when these cars came out.
Not that I'm an expert, but I have spent many years with these cars.

Point in case, like a gentleman that works for a friend of mine in the Mustang restoration business asked me why I took my rear spoiler off my 85' LX, I told him I didn't, they didn't come with spoilers because the federally mandated CHML (third brake light) didn't happen till 1986, you could get a spoiler, but you had to beg with Ford to have that happen, he didn't know this.

Take a look at this little jewel, this is a late 1979 with, yes a 200cid straight 6, this was the 6 cylinder that replaced the roll-over V-6 found in the 1974-1978 Mustang II which is what we have in our 1979 restoration project, this car although deemed by "Hot Rodder's" as worthless, this car is actually worth a mint!!

I would pay good monies for this car:

It's hard to find them like this any more, there all molested or in salvage yards.

all second that about those ass clowns! that and the mods there are punks! when you have a mod TELLING you to splash you personal info for the world to see because you are looking for a $15 part, then start talking **** to you!

this is another site to trying, they cover all years of mustangs as well, and are pretty laid back

http://forums.corral.net/forums/

jeff, now i have to wipe all the drool from my keyboard from looking at the pics you posted :D. you'd hate me if you saw what i did to my black cat (or magic, never did know what the correct name was).

Wow makes me happy I have a fox stang, lots of good stuff there!

It's ok Tim, I did the same thing to several Mudstain's I owned, you know, hind sight is 20/20.

I'll tell you this, I will go out of my way to help someone, but as soon as it gets tossed around that's it, I have been on waaaaaay too many Mudstain sites and had this happen, now I pretty much lurk and purchace, other than that I give no help.

That's one reason I stay here, cause it's not like any of those other sites, too bad they can't be like EF.

And exactly, about the info just to buy and sell parts, I understand the few jacked it up for the many, but some of it really is bullshit, so I mainly use PM's, and if that doesn't work ,back to what I normally do which is scourer around like I have in salvage yards, and so-forth.

The market, even though the economy is down, for the fox body Mustang's is taking off, and you can still get into a survivor like my LX or Giha coupe for little to nothing if you just look around and buy right, which is great cause they are very worthy investments right now, and will only go up in value if they are kept stock.

Point in case that LX I have could be flipped right now down here for $5000 which would net me a healthy profit, instead I would rather keep it, restore the little things and drive it, just like my 1985 Flareside pick up:

If you haven't seen this before:
8591.jpg

Dually_020.jpg

I have already been offered more than triple what I paid for this little truck, chased down, approached, ETC.

The same goes for the LX, I have already been offered to sell it, and didn;'t even have the car a week.

Good clean examples are in standing to be hunted down by people who know what the market is like, like myself, I'd almost sell off two of my F series pick-up's to take that Turbo Cobra off his hands if he wasn't going to restore it, or was going to let it pass on.

If he fully understands what he's got there then he'll make a lot of people proud and have a great investment on his hands, if he wants a "Hot Rod" there are more than enough molested 1987-1993 Mudstain's out there he can get his hands on cheap, and because he has a daily he can slowly pitch a few nickel's and dime's at it to get it back into shape, he's just going to have to learn a little patients to be able to find the parts.

I really hope to sit in this thread and watch this come together, it would really be a great!!!!

Here are some pics I took at the 40th in Tennessee back in 2004:

This is a 2.3 draw through turbo Indy Pace car with very little miles:

And lookie here, you think I have been stalking this guy ;)
DSC00986.jpg

He's from Texas (see plates) and I see this car at a bunch of shows it has a whopping 82k miles on it, and it always brings a crowd, and because it's what most would call off, cause it not the prototypical 5.0, SVO, Saleen, 93 Cobra, or what have you, just a plain wrapper 200cid Mustang it's considered rare, although back in the day it was nothing more than regular, it's a great survivor, and prime example of a time forgotten.

BTW, you would probably have more fun looking at all the stuff I have on my hard drives in my pooters, and what some of my friends have on their many achers, more than anything.

jeff, now i have to wipe all the drool from my keyboard from looking at the pics you posted :D. you'd hate me if you saw what i did to my BLACK MAGIC.

For those of you who don't know what Tim is talking about, the Capri (foxes sister, by Mercury) was offered with a special package called Black Magic ( I had a girl friend who had one, and a friend whom had a 1978 Capri II version )
Do not mistake the Black Magic for the RS as they are not the same packages, and MOST BL's were black with gold trim, but could be had with red trim.

Brings back good memories- I started working at a ford dealership in 1976,and remember when these came out.I have owned a couple '79s over the years, as well as a turbo capri rs, and enjoyed them all.
Couldn't agree with you more on the mustang forums-don't belong to any for that reason as well, even though I own a few now. That 2.3 is a good engine - ford has been using it for over 30 years in one form or another.
Enjoy your new ride!

Oh my, look at all the gorgeous mustangs. Thank you SVO for all the information! I am too young to remember the heyday of the Fox body, but I think they are some of the coolest mustangs out there. To see someone has taken the time to know these cars and be able to pass this info along is awesome.

I passed over this thread for a couple week and didn't know what I was missing.

Good Lucky with the resto Lacky!

holy crap!! I've been gone one day! :D

well this is more than pleasing to see! All the history of the foxbody I could find was the same three paragraphs. and any real info was on the 5.0. Looks like I'm gonna be bugging you guys for info a lot!

I know what you guys mean about the Stang Forums. Theres at most 12 active members that are trying to push massive 5.0 power. same on any of the forums. I haven't joined any, cuz I haven't found one I like :p:

1000 points awarded to... Explorer Forum! Congratulations!

I need to call my grandpa and see if he's made a decision on the car. I have money to burn and parts to buy!

Lacky, you MUST at all costs get that car. because one day you will look back and regret that you didn't. that and know that you know what it is, don't do the same thing i did! i found out what it was when it was too late. that, and it had also been in two different accidents, so that didn't hurt as bad after i found that out.

jeff, you made me even more sick by posting those pictures up, LOL! i know for me, the dream fox body list is, 79 cobra, has to be orange, with black on the bottom, and the louvers on the windows, with black interior. next would be a indy pace car, and finally a 82 GT. i had a chance a few years back to get a GT, but passed on it. it needed work. but i wished i got it now. i also had a chance to get a crimson cat, but duh! i passed on it as well. i did get one car that i wanted when i was 18. it was my friends 82 glx (i believe that was the model). absolutely nothing special. just a in line 6 auto. this thing had, and i am not lying, 500,000kms on it. it ran like a top! they never had to do any motor work, or drive line for that matter. but by the time i got it, rust got the better of it, and was not worth saving. frame rails and torque box's, inner quarters, quarter, floor, gone. i had a very hard time stripping that car, believe me!

so as i said, this is what you DONT do to a rare car!

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/513280

i just started working on it again. i have new pictures, but i don't want to put them up till i am done all the welding and grinding.

oh, BTW. sorry if i hijacked your thread with this post.

Well Tim my friend bought a 1 of 10 Canadian 1979 Pace Car with he go kart a few years back I'll try and get you some pictures, but for now, grab you tissues sir................................

81stang.jpg

Sorry is doesn't have the black interior, and good luck finding the louvers, getting mine for my LX was like pulling teeth without Novocaine.

Here's my favorite, I already had the Pace Cars, so this would be my next venture at getting my hands on, just exactly like this Cobra:

80cobra1.jpg

And actually I don't think we've hijacked his thread he's probably loving this, and getting educated on what he really has if anything, but I could be wrong.

Jeff - :navajo:

that's it! UNSUBCRIBING! LOL!

well for all i know, someday a 98 sport will be worth something! too late to turn back on that one as well!

I can't believe what I'm seeing! you people should be ashamed of yourselves! posting relevant information in the appropriate thread! that disgusts me! this has NOTHING to do with ANYTHING! why do I even bother?

...HA! fooled ya! you guys thought I was mad at you. don't be silly!
I would much rather see all this great info rather than:
"why you wastin' yo time on a 2.3?"
"you in over your head, boy!"
"thats not an Explorer!?!?"

thanks great bunches and keep it comin!

on a side note, I have NO idea where the fuse panel is. lol, this is gonna be a looong project :p:

Under the dash, to the left of the hood release handle, you will have to get down on the floor board to see it, and look upward.

Jeff - :navajo:

P.S. I can always terminate this thread :p:
