Fellas im in an emergency situation here. I turned my truck on after work today to an alarming noise. a loud "fwap""fwap""fwap""fwap""fwap" bout 2-3 times a second. they follow the revs and get louder as revs increase. (by loud i mean once the hood is popped, normal conversation is drowned out). oil level is a bit high, but other than that shes good. the sound is from the engine, passenger side. upper half. its almost like its comming from the intake manifold or exhaust manifold. cant find an exhaust leak with all the air from the fan blowing onto that side. no problems since this. pardon my french, but what the f&%* is this?? i need to drive a ways to the airport in the morning. i hope its not a valve. Thank you all very very much in advance!! 97 mounty 5.0. 140k on the odo.

thanks for the quick reply! ill have to check it out once she cools down. this sound has been there before, but just at a very VERY minimal volume, but just out of the blue it turned up the volume. ill be keeping things updated as the night goes.

can the exhause manifold be pulled without removing the engine? (if that is the case)

yes, you'll have decent access from the wheel well

is there anything else? i need to drive 100 miles tomorrow, and if she fails.... up a creek without a paddle. the heat shield looks almost blown in two... but i want to be sure.

Check for the new manifold online. You can generally find them for about 30 bucks. Be careful for the 150 and up ones. Just wanting your $$$. I need to replace my passenger side one also, but just too lazy. I did a spark plug and wire change this weekend and busted one off flush with the head. After removing the inner fender well (about 10 minute job) and wondering how I was gonna extract the rest of the plug I realized that there was all kind of room to get the manifold out. May do that later this month when things slow down.

These 5.0's are known for cracking the exhaust manifolds so you're not alone. Somewhat cheap and somewhat easy to do once you get all of the rust off....;)

Just wanted to say thanks to all who replied. As of now, it was the egr pipe. blew clean in half. will have pics as soon as the new one is installed. is this normal wear and tear or maybe something else?

Just blame it on the raw power of the 5.0 ;)

Kinda normal--clean the egr valve real good--check it's operation by connecting it to a source of constant vacuum--

Be real careful with the fitting on the header--the header will easily break with the torque of you loosening the tube---

pssstt--Torquemonster headers-----

thats what the haynes manual said too. i hit it with pb blaster a few times last night. having a buddie's shop do it cuz i dont have tools with me, so if they break it they buy it.

im tempted....man those would be just icing on the cake.
