I got a 93 4.0 by explorer and it needed a transmission it's currently 2wd but was planning to do a 4wd converison to it. What trans will bolt up to it besides the stock one? I want an automatic as thats what it currently has. Another was trans will work I'll just do a divorce case set up but if I can get a good 4wd trans that'd be awesome.

Without a LOT of custom work, the only auto Trans that will work will be an A4LD. Why not find a 4x4 with a shot motor and swap your motor to that one?

Cause ive only got $70 in the entire vehicle lol

You'd need the front TTB setup, beams, axles, transfer case... it's honestly easier to transfer an engine than to transfer suspension.

I'll do a solid axle swap, I just closed down a local off road fabrication shop I had so I'm not new to the offroad/fabrication world. I got this as mainly something to turn into a family trail rig

In THAT case, go nuts :)

I don't think any other transmission "bolts up". There was someone here that got a Chevy transmission hooked up via an adapter plate or something. The problem is, going auto to auto, you still need computer control unless you're throwing a much older trans in it that has no electronics. Here's what I was thinking of:

The 700R4 with adapter plate should do well for this project. No electronics, only a TV cable. With the adapter you can run any sbc transmission. For ford transmissions, unless you really get creative, I'd keep the A4LD.

Cheaper to have a good a4ld rebuilt or order a performance one online.otherwise your gonna be double that in adapter plates and used other trans/tranfercase...keep it cool and use the right gears,it will last as long as any other..

Only thing I'd add to this is clean fluid. Cool & clean fluid makes for a happy trans.

A lot of A4LD's died due to abuse & negligence. Not changing fluid, towing in OD, offroading with wrong gears, racing off the line. Heavy vehicle weight and the torquey 4.0L just killed them.

Agree 100%...or people putting larger tires on stock bs gears and punishing the hell outa it..ford uses the wrong gears in my opinion to begin with..for as heavy as the explorer is,with 28" it should have bare minimum of 3.73..honestly 4.10

It gets such a bad rep because soooo many were made and most if not all,got abused ..

Can you even buy the adapter plates anymore? Advance Adapters used to sell them. I don't think they do anymore.

Advance adapters no longer makes their kit, I just got off the phone with them. Leaning toward a engine swap since my motor has so many miles on it already
