'96 4.0 engine oil leak

I just bought a '96 Explorer on Ebay with a 4.0. I drove it 250 miles home and all was well. Until I looked under it and saw oil all over the driver side front of the motor/suspension. I degreased it, and as far as I can tell it is leaking from up top, around the intake manifold/head/timing case area. I'd rather not pay the dealer for an estimate if this is a common problem (the seller has agreed to work with me). Any ideas?

I'd do a compression test and/or a cylinder leakdown test (better) to make sure it isn't a head gasket problem. I'm not aware of this being a common problem with the 4.0.
