^Second on advance, their prices are great with coupons. I put in his location no one has it in stock, so the online coupons wont work. You would have to have it shipped. The online (Rockauto) pricematch with shipping would be close to their $50 price.

While you are in there, maybe replace the plenum gaskets on the upper intake. They are probably crushed by now, and real cheap to get. If you have to pull the rail, you have to replace the paper gasket under it.

I got new valve cover gaskets and an upper intake gasket, that thick one between the lower intake and fuel rail wasn't part of the set so I was just going to clean the old one and leave it. So it's important that I track a new one down?

And I actually did get this injector at oreilly, still expensive as hell. So guys prefer it and advance?

Also, what would y'all say to soaking all the injectors in carburetor cleaner (below the electrical connectors of course) until the new one arrives? Would it do anything?

Don't buy the cheap advance parts, but you can usually get good coupon codes from retailmenot. I always get 25-40%. If ordering a few hundred in parts, I'll place several orders and get the best deals. Plus, you are more likely to get the correct part, and don't have to wait for the knuckleheads to find them.

Never reuse motor gaskets. Any.

Got it. I've got a lot to learn about this kind of stuff but I can tell this forum will be an asset towards that. I am halfway through earning a mechanical engineering degree though so I'm pretty inclined to figure out how this kind of stuff works

I have 4 auto parts stores w/in 1/2 mile of each other. They all will match prices, but I find Advance to usually have the best prices, with their on-line coupon codes. The trick is to buy on-line and then pick up at the store. That way you can apply the discount code when you pay. I did this last year when I saw Advance had Castrol Mercon V on sale for around $2 a quart. IIRC the in-store prices was over $4 a quart.

If I'm looking for loaner tools, I find my O'Reilly's has the best quality, newest loaner tools. My Auto Zone's loaner tools are poor quality, usually beat to crap and greasy.

Keeping at it is a huge assist in ME.

No kidding, I would have jumped off a building a long time ago if i didn't keep reminding myself of the payoff 24/7 (and keeping a constant supply of adderall and nattty light)

This is the gasket you need: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fuel-Inject...ash=item4d63e6f9cd:g:pkkAAOSwXLpZxaPl&vxp=mtr

You can probably find it aftermarket too. Likely will come in a kit. Definitely replace that if disturbed.

You may also need replacement o-rings if you take the injectors out. I would use throttle body cleaner, carb cleaner may be too harsh, not sure. Seafoam deep creep spray would be perfect. That is what is used in fuel injector machines.

Advance is weird, if they have it in stock you can use the coupons and pick it up. Otherwise it has to be shipped. The local stores don't honor the discount codes, so you pay full price. Sometimes they send coupons in the mail, those work in the stores. The injector is 50, at advance you can probably get 30% off. Used to be $20 off $50. Search advance auto discount codes.

Put in Advance in Liberty, NY by accident, have it there but you are in Liberty SC and they don't. It would have to be ordered at the counter, and price matched. Maybe some stores allow online codes, they don't here.

For the past day I've been obsessively cleaning all engine components that I've revealed by getting the fuel rail off, put on new valve cover gaskets, replaced the faulty injector and put new o-rings on the originals. Now I'm about to get everything back together, but I ne question- the existing gasket in between the fuel rail and lower intake was about a quarter inch thick, and the one that came in the set I got from oreilly (for this year and engine) is considerably thinner, about 1/16. Is this still alright to use? My concern is that the injectors were already fully inside the cylinders with the thicker gasket, so would this thinner one require the fuel rail to be tightened further down than is allowed by the length of the injectors? It seems to be tightened down pretty good with the thin gasket, but I've learned by now that eyeballing things like this will bite you in the ass every time. Thanks!

Use the thicker spacer.

It sucks getting old. I cannot remember the specifics but I used a 96 engine in my 93. The lower intake is shorter on one of them.
For the life of me I cannot remember which combination I used but it seems to me with 50% certainty the later intake needed it's thicker spacer to work with the fuel rail.

Got everything put back together and against all odds everything works perfectly!! Runs like a top- thanks everyone for your help and advice, god knows what a mechanic would have charged me for all this and if he'd even fix the real issue. Good call on the oil change, the old oil smelled like half of it was gas. Great to have my car back!

Early OHVs had AL upper intakes, and there weren't rubber rings like we have on our plastic ones, so there were two gaskets. Best to match what you already have. Good to hear its back together, techs sometimes replace things without a clue and frustration is infinite and costly. They could keep a problem like yours over a week too in some places. That is why I like fixing my stuff. I put a grand marquis back together, and one injector had a pinhole at the end and sprayed gas. The old O-ring was sealing it.

Good job! Feels powerful to fix your own stuff doesn't it?

I marked your thread "solved".
I hope you make it a point to visit the forum often. You can learn a lot just by reading and trying to help others.

Very nice.

Sure, I'll definitely stick around. Still a very interesting place when you're not trying to have something fixed. Counting this project, so far I've been initiated on the workings of the brake system, fuel injection, A/C, intake system and a lot of custom cabin wiring so I'll try to help out around here where I can. Glad I found this place!

Did you notice better mileage on your trip than you have been getting?

Way better. There was one full day that I had no choice but to drive it to school and back with the bad injector, went through most of a full tank in about 30 miles of driving! It's doing wayy better now. I got a full tank, reset the trip counter, and each time a bit got used up I'd fill it up til the pump clicked off and divide the trip counter by the amount i just bought. Did it a few times and I'm getting around 23 mpg now. Mostly highway driving and it's got the Mazda 5 speed manual so that helps too.

Whew.. my heart skipped a beat when my car started knocking loudly while driving today.. luckily I had just forgotten to re-tighten the nut holding the EGR valve onto the exhaust and the gases were knocking it around. Re-tightened and it sounds like a dream! Have y'all customized your exhaust any? I think the stock exhaust sounds real nice on the 4.0
