94 XLT 4.0 tow package?
Ok so Im sick of fiddling with that stupid transmission, It takes forever to engage and it wont shift out of first when its cold unless i manually override it. I have heard you could swap a 700r4 transmission or a c5. If someone had a link to a write up with pictures, or tell me exactly what adaptors etc i would need. Basically i want to know exactly what i would have to buy to get one of those transmissions to fit. My explorer is a 94 ex 4 door 4x4 4.0 v6 if that helps
Thanks! :exp:

Fat wallet would be first, someone will come here and tell you how much but you are looking at custom drive shafts, adapters, the tranny and what to use for a transfer case.Engineering all of the linkages and odds and ends. This is a major deal. You could get a rebuilt tranny with 3yr 100,000 warranty for $2000 from Jasper.:D

Look up Advance Adapters on google for the parts and info. Search this site for "700R4 swap" or similar... it's been done so many times. But is not cheap.

Unless you have the cash and a great desire to do the swap it's usually not needed. The issues you've described about the A4LD are typical and pretty easy to fix without spending much. Slow engagement is usually old seals (valve body rebuild) or old fluid and an old filter. Delayed 1-2 shifts are usually a sticking governor if it only occurs when cold, or a bad vacuum modulator if it's all the time. Relatively cheap and easy fixes.

If not overheated the A4LD can last a long time and is not really a bad tranny. I can't seem to kill mine; overheated it once so bad it puked out all the fluid, refilled it and it's been fine ever since. Abused it in plenty of other ways and it's still going strong so I have some respect for it.

The 94 A4LD has all the updates made to it as well so it's the best year to have; if you aren't doing a lot of off road driving, adding stress in the form of large tires or pulling trailers, and you maintain it well, it can last a good long time. Regular fluid and filter changes, improved tranny cooler, and a tranny temp gauge can go a long way toward extending its life.

There trannys are very strong!! Many people run them and have not had problems.you can just buy all the parts and take your to a good shop but they have to have all the tools to put the larger parts in,thats what ill be doing.

That truck on there site is a guys over on rpm and he makes a TON of power and have been running that trans for years

Okay so what your saying a valve body rebuild and the governor sticking can be fixed in vehicle? Oh yeah it had a trannie fluid flush and new filter about 500 miles ago. which didnt seem to help it.

Governor and modulator can be fixed with tranny in the vehicle. Governor is a bit trickier on a 4WD but on a 2WD it's easier. Modulator is easy, just pull back the carpet and unbolt an access panel in the floor.

Valve body can also be done with tranny in the vehicle, it pretty much just unbolts and drops down.
