adjust your TPS (another free hp mod)

Not all years have the steel sleeves. If you have the sleeves, you'll need to get a #2 drill bit and carefully drill it. The bit will catch the sleeve and start turning it. When that happens you need to pull out and start "Bumping" it a little at a time to get it done. Other wise do as loboga said and file it.

I think I'll give this a try.

Checked my TPS , it was about .939... Started taking out the screws...the second didnt want to cooperate. But just shifting the sensor with one screw loose let me bring it up to .952. It's at 9.45 now, went back down after i tighten it. If I get a chance later I'll do battle with the other screw and set it right. Gator clips for the multimeter help out too :D

Yeah, i got .96 exactly when i last checked, i couldnt get any screw out, just had to cross my fingers and hope for the best!

Just did the mod today.
Pre adjustment reading 10.25
after adjustment 9.599 Damn those screws were tight. I had to take the whole throttel body off just to get a good bite on the screws.

Any way, I noticed zero idle differance.
SIGNIFICANT throttle responce.
Nice mod for the time invested.

woohoo

Well, I bought my truck not too long ago, in October. Checked out this site, started reading `bout stuff, and decided to put some Warrior shackles in it and do the TT.. Cool, another 1.5" to me, for 60 bucks ;).

Saw the "throttle cable mod", decided to try it, and gee, I had some slack at the butterfly! So i deslacked it and got my pedal back. Free? Cool.

Then I tried this mod. My TPS reading started out at .93, jacked it up to .96. I'm actually suprised at the difference in throttle response, esp. for a free mod on a basically stock truck.

Cheers to the guys on this forum! My new (for me) X is nice and peppy now :)

Tried it, can't do it.

Went out last night after first seeing this thread to see what my current tps was reading. I couldn't get a thing off either wire! I know I'm doing something wrong, maybe not a good ground on multi-tester black lead? Any ideas? I'm trying this on my 96 4x4 sport. I want a snappy pedal too!!

try again, you prolly didnt get to the wire

i actually took hat pins and pushed them into where each of the wires goes into the connector(but not into the wires's insulation, where the insulation goes inside the connector actually), because the leads on my meter were too fat to get into the end of the connector to do as you normally would. also the connector has to be plugged into the tps sensor and the voltage checked with the key on to get a proper reading..it's going to be the middle and one of the other wires.

I was cold and in a hurry! Not having a garage sucks!! Thanks for the hat pin idea, and I was holding the black lead to ground. Next time I'll try between two wires on the TPS.

I would sugest you check and set your "Curb Idle" before you do this MOD. On the 4.0 you need to set it at 675rpm. To do this, make sure the engine is warm, unplug the IAC valve, then crank it up. 98% of the 4.0L will not run, meaning they need to be set.

After you do that then readjust your TPS, it'll make a big difference.

What you are doing is resetting the WOT. When the computer thinks it's at WOT, it will turn off the A/C & alternator field, and down shift the tranny if you have an automatic. This MOD does not give you any Hp, it just re-assaigns what is currently being used on other things.

I've did this on several FORD cars & trucks. When I do this on other peoples cars, I ask them what did they notice after the test drive. I don't tell them what to expect. This is what they say:
"That was the best MOD for the money"-he paid for dinner.
"It feels smoother, and pulls me better"-from a girl in a SHO.
"Just call me 'Stompy'"-from a guy in Canada about his Sport Trac I did.

It's been a long time since I've checked the board out. I saw this mod and decided to try it out. Can you give me a step by step procedure to set the "curb idle"? Thanks in advance. BTW, I have a 99 4.0 SOHC.

What should the curb idle be? My x has always run at 1k...is that too high?

yes.

yea, 1k is deff too hgh. You may want to do a search of the forums, or some one will correct me if i'm wrong, but i think the curb idle is like 625 or 725, i forget. deffinately not 1000 though, sounds like your truck is stuck in a 'cold start' state or something, if it's idling that high fully warm. i'd check to see if you have any computer codes thrown before adjusting anything if I were you. just my $.02

Idle adj. for first generations, Too? :p
Am I correct in assuming that this procedure should work with early 4.0L, also. I can't see why not unless there was something different about newer X's. I did the TPS mod w/decent results w/o adjusting the Idle, But every little bit helps. Thanks

heh.

yea, it will work on any ford with that tps sensor arraingement. my 1989 mustang AND my 1996 thunderbird both had a tps, same value to shoot for (.96 v) as well.

generally speaking if your truck looks on the dash tach like it's idling below 1k your probably all set, idling at or above when it's fully warm indicates to me that there are deff other problems to be remedied "before" you adjust your tps, as it derives it's own value from where the throttle butterflies come to rest, and doesn't in itself adjust the idle speed, but the idle speed (ie- the position of the tb butterfly) has an effect on the tps value. so if it's idling high, the tps may throw an out of range value anyways, so adjusting it to .96v in this case might actually be detrimental, until the high idle conditon is fixed.

Just checked mine twice: .965, .963.....hmm, I think I'll leave mine where it it :D! After I put on my new TB and drive for a few hours or so, I'll check it again just in case retightening it changes it much.

I did mine last week along with taking up the slack in the throttle cable.

Mine was .94 and I adjusted it to .96. As for loosening those screws, I have a tip for you all:

Use a short bit (mine had phillips screws) and a pair of chanel locks. That way you can get in there in those tight spots without stripping the screws. This also will give you better leverage. Worked great for me. Hope this helps.

I didnt notice any difference in my idle quality or throttle response as it was so close to optimal settings to begin with.

I used an impact screwdriver, it worked great! :)

Finally checked mine again. It was already at .96.......At least I know that it's right.
