What gear ratio are you running?

What's wrong with the axle you have now besides the gear ratio?

im guessing the cost to regear and buy gears etc. It would be cheaper to just buy axles with 4.10's then to buy gears install kits and then have to pay to get them geared.

You shouldn't have any problems with your install. Might as well check your brakes and axle seals while you have it all apart, besides that its very straight forward.

thats what i figured. I know the brakes are fine i just put hawk pads on a few months ago. The cheapest quote i got around my area for gears is 600$. I can get a whole rear axle with 4.10's for around 350$ on alot of forums ive visited. My only question about that is are all explorer 8.8's the same??? Some come with drum brakes can i just swap out the drums for my discs and the other hardware??

edit:how many quarts of gear oil does the rear diff hold???

as far as i know their are 2 kinds of 8.8s ours and full widths.(f150,broncos). all the 8.8 hardware is interchangable... buy the one with 4.10s.

get gear oil for a limited slip differential

there are more then 2 kinds of 8.8
It was also used in cars and Rangers.

91-94 explorer 8.8 31 spline, drum
95-2001 Ex 8.8 31 spline discs
ranger and mustangs have 28 spline axleshafts and the axle tubes are a smaller diameter.

91-2001 8.8's from an Explorer will bolt into any 91-2001 explorer. There are slight differences in the sway bar setips I believe, and some of th elater model 4 doors have control arms mounted to the frame and axle, I simply cut these off when I put my Explorer 8.8 in my BII

didn;t the aerostar van have an 8.8 also?

I need help with the install 911......How do you get the springs on the stubs for the locker??? The springs are way to tight..

If its really tight, you should be able to compress them with a needle nose pliers. That and a small screw driver should get them in.

x2, its really tight but use a small hammer with some sort of a driver and you'll get them in.

Got them in and everything is together but now i cant get the damn center pin back in. For some reason the c-clip cover pieces are not sitting dlush in the hole so the pin wont slide in. Ive tried re-adjusting everything but it wont go in...

Did all of your tolerances fall into the acceptable range? Did you try and pull the axle shafts out as far as they would go? What kind of lube did you use when you use when you put it together, if it was really heavy, maybe it’s causing the components to be out of spec.

Let us know what you find out.

Do you have the instructions that come with the locker? Its quite specific about the clearences between the gears, and the cross shaft. It is also recomended that you use some kind of assembly lube during the install.

Here is a copy of the install instructions from Aussie. http://www.offroadlockers.com/display/Manual_d.pdf
