Betty's "I want to be a mule" progress log thread

Back in the 80's I think the Gleason Torsen Tru Trac came out and I think 4Wheeler magazine did a story on diffs. Been a lot of water under the bridge since then but the end results was that the Trac Loc and Power Loc clutch differentials would not pull a vehicle off a jack stand with the other drive wheel off the ground no matter what they did to it. The Detroit locker would of course. And so would the Gleason Torsen Tru Trac. But only with the e-brake applied (pre load). Now things happened over the years and there was a split. So now you can still buy a Tru Trac or you can buy a Torsen. I have read there are different levels of the Torsen. And the upper levels can have pre load. But I don'tknow how they do that. I read some where that the Torsen in the FX4 Ranger was a lower level and was the only lower level Torsen that had pre load.

So if you have a good Torsen with preload and remember to put a few clicks of the e-brake on you can do some pretty good stuff. Fact I have followed a guy around for years with open diffs and he would go places I needed a locker just by uses the e-brake and brake pedal to "pre-load" the axles. They usedto teach the e-brake pre-load in the winter portion of drivers ed. But I don't know if they still do that or not.

Idunno Jack, that means I would have to work both feet and my tongue at the same time in separate synchronization. I don't like the sound of that-:D

Michael Jordan was pretty good at that, with his tongue.

I'll see if I can break the Torsen I have with 400+rwhp some day, I think I have found a plan I can do this time. Thanks to the Eaton EE kit guys for posting their great pictures, Andy and Tim.

Night, gotta deliver mail on Saturday.

OK, to end the front binding feel debacle .

I have procured a "new" used front differential and new rebuilt cv axles.

However, I just completed a 150 mile round trip. Could broken carrier bearing caps last this long? The front has been free wheeling in 2wd mode, but still.:scratch:

I got a second diff for the simple fact if, when I did drop this one and find it bad inside, I would be screwed. This way I can crack both open, clean them up and use the best looking one. :D

Oh, I stopped by O'rielly auto parts. They now have their parts catalog corrected, and have the correct part numbers for the front axle seals. Gotta have them ya know. ;)

I got this "new used" housing cracked open, the bearings all seem tight and there is hardly any backlash slop in the ring and pinon at all-:D

I need to go get some brake cleaner ( why is it that stuff is always gone when you need it and in your way when you don't)

I'll clean it up real good , tap in the new seals and get to the real work.

Let me know Jon if you need a hand. I've never had Sissy apart before and would be willing to drive out and help to learn.

Wow, thanks Jack.:D

Actually, I sat around feeling sorry for myself for about 10 minutes and dove right in, I have the "old " diff out now. It feels smooth as silk too--:( well, :D but now I have to hope the cv axles were the issue. I feel nothing wrong with either of the 3 u joints on the drive shaft. Idunno.

Should have this wrapped up tonight. To be honest I would love the help but have little room working around my oven and spray booth. A tool hander would be good though.

I had a clunk I couldn't figure out for the life of me which felt like it was the front end on the 2nd gen. Turned out it was the T-case. Only happened in 4wd, and sounded like a bind release, leading me to believe it was in the front end. As soon as the M5OD /1354 was installed, I never heard it again. I even went as far as replacing the rear bushing on the diff arm.

Well I am a decent tool handerer. If you can use some help now or in the future send me a PM with directions. I'm looking for stuff to do these days.

Jon if I wasn't so wrapped up in the minute I'd love to come give you a hand with a project. Maybe soon when it warms up, I been looking for a reason to escape the city life for a day or two! Plus it's been so long since we had a good hangout:thumbsup:

Jack, Thomas, you guys are awesome!.

The problem here is my issues are not allowing for planning lately.

I enjoy hanging out with friends and "improving" our trucks, but all this work just to get it back to where it was before , well, I don't enjoy that so much.

However, I do have some "fun" things needed done, I was hoping to have a get together for those kind of things. When it warms up enough to get back out on the driveway---:D

I hear that, Spring came for a moment last week, and Winter kicked it's ass/now it's cold again.

OK, well. Puff is fixed.

Traveler came by today to try to replace the passenger side header gasket on his 2000 Eddie beee

But nooo, I actually broke off 2 bolts before finding one had been broken by the guy before us who gave up. So, now we have an issue which really does deserve a party. Best attempt in my mind is to try for a head replacement. there are still 3 bolts not yet loosened, and, 3 which are broken off. Time would be best spent on a head.

Then, my son Matt calls to report his mounty to be mis behaving. 5 hours away. He headed home, mad it about 30 miles away to return dads worried call, as it was raining ice--
I told him to check the fluids while he was stopped. Ongoing weird issue he could not describe, told me to tell him to do this.

He was already pulled off the road on a farm access driveway. Got out and his truck locked --all on it's own with the keys in the ignition.

ok cool, it's raining ice, and he's in a t shirt locked out and cannot tell me exatcly where he is.

I ran to the garage and grabbed a real long pice of sheet metal, hoping it looked enough like a "slim jim" to actually work, and Drove this brand new front diff with no road test on it yet--it took me about 45 minutes to reach the popsicle which used to be my kid.

He got into the warmed up puff wagon while I tried the pseudo slim jim to no avail. After about 10 minutes, in a coat I looked back to the truck at Matt and thought about how tough a kid he is--

Ok, still no go with the slim jim. Heck with this-we have towing insurance and now is the time to see if it works.
We called the tow company who has always cleaned up our messes like this, they unlocked his truck, and brought it home to us while we had dinner. 340.00

I need a cookie and a blanket please.

Wow, that's an adventure. I hope nobody gets sick, this is a cold Spring so far.

Man Jon, you take care. I looked out this morning and we have 4-6 inches of white stuff out there. I will get out and clear it off in a bit. Hope it warms up like it is suppose to. Again I'm up for an adventure so let me know if I can do anything. Even if it's just part delivery.

Here you go Jon. Some pictures of Black Bear Pass.

I had a lot of motorcycle parts--almost a complete bike and then some dropped off so Puff's side of the garage was full of parts awaiting prep.

I started on an inside house project, and heard what sounded like we were under attack. Banging sounds coming from everywhere.

Well, we got pounded by this

Puff was outside in the driveway. So was that dang 4runner :(:(

I'm sorry to see that, I know what that does to cars, houses, and everything. I hope it's not too bad there.
