Betty's "I want to be a mule" progress log thread

It's always something. I think I could spend another 10k on this thing and still be wanting more.

I should just go buy a camry and give up

I may. I just saw what looks like a sweet 98 F-150 extended cab 4x4... It'd pull the camper, and it would pull the tow dolly I can't rent with the explorer!

A newer daily driver and a newish mustang with a proven blower or turbo 'kit' would be awesome.
The cost, unfortunately.......serious issue

but blowing the doors off one in the summer OR winter with a soccer mom truck rules

I've thought this too, but there is really no uniqueness to that either. And like Tim said, every one expects a mustang to go fast, but not an explorer.

Buy the new Bronco when it comes out :)
Those look awesome! ^

Yea, I'm ok with loosing some uniqueness in my daily driver.
Now today my OD light is flashing. The fun never seems to stop.

Ok, you are helping me to make a decision. Oh, and after reading this I actually threw up. Not even joking.

Yea, one of those elm connectors showed up in the mail, so I'll see if it works, and if FORscan will read the trans code for me.

I really don't want spend any money on this thing for a while to try to get myself in a better position to buy something newer. Its just ****ty, as my truck is really still exceptionally nice to drive.

Thanks for the sympathy. I wanted to puke when that stupid od light started flashing also.

At least you haven't been trying to chase down a vibration issue for two months and have yet to find/solve it:)

Non ford related vehicle. Jon knows what I'm talking about, it's been at his place trying to solve it.

i happen to have a trans, IN STOCK even!

this is one thing that i have learned when screwing with this kind of stuff.....keep a spare of EVERYTHING!

lol. The man with every part.

I better stop throwing my misery around other peoples threads.
P7081 1-2 shift error
I think I'd prefer to try a valve body before living the pain of dropping that xfer case, cutting the exhaust up, etc.

Today I gave Betty a good drink of fresh mobile 1 and a new filter. While i was under there I got a shock.

Let me start off by saying I am perfectly capable of installing a drive shaft. There is no way in hell I left a strap off. Note the bolt is tight and the hole in the strap is not torn out.

This makes the second time I discovered loosened drive shaft bolts. Last time I had one missing and 3 loose on the rear drive shaft to the rear pinion. I know for a fact I had them tight.

I had loaned Betty to a friend for a few days and it was parked for 2 nights across the street from who I suspect did this. Looks like they took out one strap bolt, bent the strap out of the way and re installed the bolt. The remaining strap is bent to hell, and the bolts bent. I will need to cut off the strap to hopefully save the pinion yoke.

what kind of psycho dose that?

a little over 2 weeks ago I saw a guy driving past my house with a huge, I mean 12 foot tall load of 10" and larger diameter hedge posts, on both his work bed truck and an 18 foot trailer, all secured with ratchet straps which had been re tied together in several spots. No chains. He was so overloaded his rear tires were smoking from rubbing the bed as he drove down our side street. When I say it was 12 feet high i am not stretching it a bit, as the logs were well over a dozen high, about 8-10 wide.
He took off up a paved county road going on a 25 mile journey on the highway like that. There is a guy over in the next county who buys the hedge posts. He was going to have a blow out and was barely able to control the load going 20 miles per hour, let alone how fast he'd be going on the county road. A voice in my head said mind your own business, but grandpa in me kicked in so I called the sheriff.
The very next day I was outside, he drives by and says "asshole!"

Tell me what you think.

anyway-I got out my dremmel tool and cut the strap, which allowed the bent bolt to come out clean. Bad news is I have to order a new conversion u joint now.

Edit. I have found 2 different markings on these straps. They look identical , is there a difference other than the stamping?

That is crazy! I'd be concerned what kind of sheriff pulls a guy over and tells him who it was that reported the stupidity...
