I'm trying to make up my mind on whether or not I want to drop my truck and throw on some 20 inch rims for the "street" look. Or if I should throw on some bigger tires (don't know a whole lot about tire sizes and brands) to give it that rugged look. Would it be almost pointless to raise my truck and put big wheels on it? Then again it's pretty pointless to drop it and throw 20s on it too....

I just need to see some explorers like mine 95-99 on some big tires and see how they look. I won't take my truck off road (it's a 2wd) so even if I were to lift it with bigger tires I would have it lookin all clean. I like off road trucks on street when they're clean... (sorry for all of you who live to think that off road trucks HAVE to be offroad)

So show me pictures of some clean 95-99 explorers lifted on some big boy shoes.. THANKS!

:D

It's your truck I say do whatever you like!

Have you tried a search on this forum for Gen II trucks like yours? You will find plenty of them have been lifted.

hey bro yah i have a 99 i am lifting it so it looks clean like you said i am throwing a spindle and shackle and i put on some 31"s it lookes good but me personally i like lifted and plan to offroad when i can afford a real kit but good luck with that decision but i know you can lift a truck easily and for little money

Like 410 said, it is up too you. There is nothing wrong with lifting a 2wd. Heck in Cali you could go do some dune hopping if you wanted. My motto is "Lift it or Leave it", but it is completely up to the owner what they want to do with thier rig.
Good luck, wich ever way you go.

this is explorer kids X. It is one sweet 2wd explorer. I think he goes off road but it looks amazing when its clean too.

Remember your gonna have to plan this out really good and know what you have to spend money on. If you go big tires you need a gear change or your gas milage will take a crap. Also the little loose ends here and there. Good luck!

As 410 said try a search. There are at least three 2nd gen picture threads that I know of on here, Or just go read folks Elite Registries. You will find that most of us review our parts and give instructions throughout these registries as well.

In the end though, yes I think lifting a 2wd and throwing larger tires on it to be a street queen is extremely pointless. But then I am a biased and rather practical person. If I buy a truck I would never waste my money on a 2wd. If all I needed was 2wd I would buy an economy car.

dreamr If all I needed was 2wd I would...[/QUOTE said:
if i had a 2wd it would get big wheels and a drop or just really big wheels... a 4wd would get big tires and a lift. unless your going to prerun your 2wd it just seems counter productive imo

how much would I end up spending if I did a lift similar to explorer kids X?
like with the tires etc? Probably a ton more than if I just got a really good
set of 20s and lowered the truck huh?

You can lift a 2wd to fit big tires easy and cheap
You are not looking to build a long travel flexy bullet proof suspension for jumping the dunes, you are looking to improve the looks and gain big tires.
Torsion twist, body lift and you can fit 33's or 35's.
Then re-gear.

lifting is usually pretty expensive. Lowering is a little cheaper, but you're alignment will usually always be out and you'll wear tires quicker. However, parts are cheaper to lower it.

Lift- 350$
gears- 150 or so
Install of gears- 150 or so
Wheels- 75$ shipped
Tires- 1000

i coulda down it cheaper if i would have bought soem stuff used, but i did good i think, i bought my gears off a guy on this forum, brand new, and saved a bit, the spindles i got off ebay, but if you check the FS forum, theres a guy sellign some for half rthe price of ebay, i had a set of 35"s i could have ran that i paid 150$ for, but i decided i wanted new and 37"s. The wheels were used, but cleaned up nice. I paid 75$ shipped, shipping was like 68$. If you shop aroudn you can do it cheap.
