Bkennedy's SAS and Rebuild Thread

Glad I took the battery boxes with me, Bosch batteries are taller by about an inch and slightly wider. Won't fit. Pep Boys might be my new parts store. Guy at counter is building a 4-Runner. He discounted two Optima group 25 red top so it was only about $20 more total. Saved me about $150. CCA are much higher with the Optima (660/910), but reliability is a factor. See how these work out.

which one did you go to?

Right by one of the worst laid out Home Depots in the country. Also always liked Giovantis pizza just up the street.

i haven't been to that one in years. When I lived in Clairemont, that's the one I always went to. There is an incredible sandwich shop right over next to it. I'll have to check them out. The Optima in the Explorer is garbage.

I'll admit, its nice to go out to the garage to check battery voltage and have them both above 12 volts. The old main battery (red top) would be at 11.5 or lower, the secondary (yellow) at 10.3 or lower, the day after the vehicle was used. With a trickle charger on both batteries, they would last about a week before they wouldn't start the Explorer. I have them wired with a solenoid that activates when the key is turned to "on" so both batteries are used to start the engine. I think the secondary battery was dragging the primary down whenever I turned the key to "on". With two fresh identical batteries, both with high cranking amps, they should last a long time.

When I lived in Kearney Mesa my go to was the Napa at Convoy and Clairmont Mesa. Seemed like they always had what I needed in stock.

Trip to Shaver Lake was great. Good people, good weather, great fishing, great trails. Broke a passenger side motor mount on the last day, and with the help of Rock Ranger, got it chained in place. Bowed the tie rod in the same place as last time. Lots of scrapes and dings to underside and wheels.

On the way home, not so much. I had a "small" electrical fire in the Explorer. I was driving southbound 5 in Burbank area, gauges started flipping out, lost power pulled over, smelled smoke. It started in the wiring above the fuel filter. Somehow, the short used the park brake cable like a lightning rod, it got red hot all the way into the cab. I could see the rubber seal melting from the heat, so I disconnected both batteries, burning my fingers and arm in the process. Used up my fire extinguisher on the flames under the cab, then smoke started pouring out of the dash vents. I dumped the water I had left on the dash with no effect. A passing fire engine on its way to refuel from fighting the fires in Glendale stopped and put it out (thanks to Pasadena FD). They had to pull a hose and douse the dash, then we tore the dash apart to make sure it was out. Its bad, but not as bad as I thought it was going to be, expecting to lose the entire rig. If that engine hadn't shown up, I would have lost it. If I had brought my dog on the trip, I would have lost the Explorer from the time it took to get the dog out and to a safe place. I have seen hundreds of car fires and know it only takes a few minutes for them to be fully engulfed.

Had it towed home for free through AAA. The adjuster is coming out tomorrow to look at it. I'm fairly sure it will be a total loss and I can buy it back as a salvage. After they decide, I will tear into it to see where it started, and how much damage there really is. I think the best course of action will be to find a donor Explorer and pull the dash, parts, wiring, etc. The dash damage appears limited to the dash and everything that was in it, so I could replace the dash, and the dash wiring harness to the firewall. The underside wiring I have no idea about. I will post pictures later, but I am sick of looking at it for now.

I will soon be looking for a donor Explorer, don't care if it runs, needs to have a tan interior and hopefully white so I can pull some body panels for later. Won't matter if its 2wd, 4wd, auto or manual because I am not using the stock trans/transfer cases anyway. At first, I was thinking of parting it out and being done with that. Maybe get an extended wheel base LJ. After spending a little time thinking, there is no way I am letting it die. Too many memories of my family and my father wrapped up in the rig. Its going to be a long process, so I don't think we will be doing any runs this season.

I saw Matt mention this on facebook, and my heart sank. Yours has always been the cleanest built rig in the old group. Glad to hear you will likely keep and fix it. The fire truck happening by is more than a lucky coincidence, it's a sign that it's meant to keep on wheeling!

I'm really sorry to hear this Brian. I am glad that karma was on your side and that firetruck was there to help out. I have so many years worth of splices from projects that have come and gone, I have worried about that happening to mine.

If you need any help with the wiring, maybe I could come out and lend a hand.

Sorry to hear bud. There is a white 94 limited in Encinitas for a few hundred bucks. Might be worth checking out.

Let me know how I can help Brian.

Plenty of doners up here. I have plenty of room in the driveway if you need me to pick something up for you.

Do not be like me, fix it dude!

I've already done that three times, and regret it each time..

As for the total, it's almost automatic at that vehicle age. I'm surprised each time they fix the super duty for something instead of totaling it out. They will probably also not cover any of the upgrades you've done.

before I get frustrated and part it out.
:nono: Don't do that! :nono:
I remember the first time I totaled my Ranger, in 1999, :shifty:. I successfully negotiated for a higher amount than they first offered, then bought it back for the amount that they would get from the junkyard. ;)
Daily driving it for 18 years since.

How hard was it to register after it was salvaged?

I think I made a mistake calling the insurance company, I should have just fixed it myself and not told them.
