All right this started the other night when I was driving home from picking up some friends, when ever I turn left it sounds like metal to metal knocking but I can't say that, that is what it is. I am not sure what it is but if you have any idea what it is or what it could be, but if any possiblitys on what it is or any way I can simply check to pin point the problem please put in your 2 Cents to help me out.

I'd guess a wheel bearing is go'n out. An easy way to check would be to jack up the front end and grab the front and back of the tire and see if there is any movement back and forth. I'd guess it's the front right one?

I've never heard of a 4.0 sohc AWD, but I'd guess you have a cv joint going out, If so you need a new front axleshaft. There is one for each side, which side does the sound come from?

Man do i have a story for you
Had a '93 some years ago and was getting a clicking or ratcheting noise from the wheels as well.

Took it to my next door neighbors shop (big mistake) they thought it was the locking hubs acting up. But for some reason they decide to first change the wheel bearings. So after they did that they took it for a test drive. Hubs locked up and actually snapped the output shaft on the tranny.

If it wouldn't have been my neighbor, I would have taken him to small claims court considering the fact that they diagnosed it correctly, but for some reason changed the wheel bearings instead.

Long story short, $1500.00 for a trans rebuild and $400.00 to fix the hubs.

needless to say that suuuuuuuuuuucked

Trans shop said he had never seen a broken output shaft before.

My suggestion is take it to either a very qualified shop or the dealer. (I hate going to dealers, way too expensive) If it's something that could be catastrophic and isn't easily or correctly diagnosed, the dealer often knows best.

Good Luck, I'm curious to hear what the prob is.

dont have time at the moment to check it out. thanks for the possible problems, it seems the sound comes from the front middle but i cant be sure at the moment, the only thing i can relate this sound to is like when my friends ring and pinon gears went out in his rearend but it comes from the front just not sure on the side, and it only happens when i take a left turn any where from wheel locked to left or even mildly turned to the left, never to the right has it happend.

i have resently noticed i have the same problem from what it sounds my tires normaly rub when i turn sharp left now it makes a noise that sounds like to pices of metal tapping but i can't seem to figure what it is

Same here.. driving me crazy, let me know if you figure out what it is.
