Converting AWD for 4WD/2WD

The transfer cases are almost identical from 95-01. The changes mentioned here are all in the GEM module, that's the device which decides whether to put the TC into 2WD, 4WD, or the 4WD low. It's done electrically, that's why it's possible to bypass the auto feature in those that have it. The brown wire is the one wire that triggers the TC internal clutch.

The first post was that my grandmother has a 2001 X Sporttrac and I have a 1997 X Sport and since she has the same interior is basically the same and the knob gives her the choice of 2WD, then 4WD, the 4WDLOW where mine says the Auto, 4WD, 4WDLOW, but now I know that I can do the brown wire mod and have that Auto basically be 2WD and not worry about the front engaging while I try and get a smoke cloud going. If that all made any help

no, your trasfer case has a true 2wd mode, the auto 4x4 didn't come until 96 or 97.

For the record, '97. They did away with the vulnerable center-axle disconnect in favor of a live axle, and went with a live front axle and full-time 4auto.

Interesting, the first post mentions a 2001 Sport Trac having a 2WD selection. Did something change in the GEM of the Sport Trac, or was this a typo? Who else has a 4WD Sport Trac who could say?

The Sport Trac (from the start), and the 2-door Sport for the '01-'03 model years went back to the Borg Warner 13-54 transfer case. Any of the automatic 4wd systems used the 44-05 and the AWD system used the 44-04 (or was it the 44-06??? One was in the Expedition, and my brain cna never keep them straight!!)

Please read the Comprehensive Brown Wire Mod thread in the transfer case section of the forum. Also, please note that tire-roasting burnouts and extended periods of rear wheel spin (including dyno runs) are not good for the 44-05 transfer case. They can and do result in (very expensive) damage to the internals of the case. Just because you can do them doesn't make them a good idea.

The 01 Sport Tracs have a 1354, that's odd. But that's okay, it's all I can do to keep up with just their names. The 96-01 AWD's were either a BW4404 or BW4403, depending on whether it had the speed sensor. The Expedition 4WD was the huge 4406, what I'm swapping in soon like others have.

So was the 95/96 TC a 4405 also, or was that the BW1354?

44-05 with different programming and a different front axle from the 98-01.

I wasn't interested in learning stuff for my grandmothers sporttrac....I was just refering to how her switch had 2wd as an option instead of auto....so why did this all of a sudden turn to what transfer case is in what..?

Maybe other people were interested, most of us are here to learn from each other, so while you the op aren't interested any going any deeper into the reasoning other people are, and will dive deeper into the subject while the questions have been raised.

4x4 sport trac

My 04 sport trac has 2w 4w and 4 lo. hope this helps.

:burnout::rolleyes::burnout::burnout::nono::burnout::burnout::burnout:YOUR TRANSFER CASE(:help:) YOU (:chug::chug::bdrunk::burnout:) :dead::banghead:

Sorry about that i am :bdrunk:

LOL at that post!!!

tell a story with smilies

I thought I would share a bit more here, interested or not

The 2004 Ranger Edge with a SOHC and 5 speed ALSO uses a e shift BW1354 ONLY it has the CV style output for the front driveshaft

Our 2002 Sport trac has a 1354 E shift also

We have a 97 XLT 4.0L with a e shift 4405 on its way south, I would LIKE to replace the 4405 with a E shift 1354, one of these late model ranger/sport trac GEM's MIGHT do the trick???

You could make it do the trick, but it'd be a wiring nightmare.... The GEMs are wired similar, but nowhere near the same. I would suspect that the Ranger's setup may be a little closer to the older Explorer's, but it would take some time with the schematics of each just to see how to make everything else play nice. Trying to get the new GEM to play nice with the PCM and PATS system may be a royal pain (although now that I think of it, the PATS didn't come around until 98, didn't it?? Might be OK with a 97)

With enough time and effort, anything's possible though... Getting it to shift properly and indicate as such using the OEM Explorer relays would be a fun challenge.... It would take some serious re-pinning of the connectors, but ie may be possible.

At any rate, (as I'm sure you know) it's not going to be plug-n-play...

wiring is what I do!! LOL we can always shift the truck by hand until we figure it out!! LOL

my other thought is to use the "touch drive" shift motor and 4x4 computer from a 86-88 Ranger/BII

its a stand alone 4x4 shift controller for the 1354 e shift t case, it gets a NSS wire, power, ground, and thats about it I think! This is my son in laws 97, he keeps saying he wants to go V8 but he has no $$$$$$$$ LOL the brown wire mod has bought us some time, but 180K miles and original t case and auto trans = timebomb!!

rebuild the auto trans is okay with us, but the 4405 is not going back in there! LOL and a $400 BW1354 manual is out of his price range... so we may have to use our junk yard skills!! IF he get s afriggin job soon I may reward him with this help

The difference in GEM's from the 95/97 to those Sport Trac or Ranger GEM's would be more about the vehicle stuff, not the 4WD. The 4WD parts are very similar, the wiring and modules(not GEM). But you know how the GEM from 98-01 doesn't work well in a 95-97, the problems would be like that or worse.

If you are serious Jamie, I would choose to see about making the 97 Explorer parts work with the 1354, or go to the bronco II stuff that you mentioned. I am playing with the idea of mixing the Expedition GEM and switch to work in my 98 with the 4406. It's the same matter of comparing the differences, and finding a solution with the parts you can get.

I love Ford, they make it SOOOOOOOOOOOO EAAAAAAAAAASY! LOL
but I am not sure whats worse? being able to buy your new upper intake and carb at wal mart or having to carry 13mm and 1/2" sockets and wrenches

Sorry about that last post of mine.. I was having a bad day and shouldn't have wrote anything...I know that others maybe be interested in the sport trac drivetrain, my bad..

we all have bad days!!! dont sweat it, I type everyday with a range of emotions showing through! LOL
