So I just drove my explorer to work and I can't 100% tell but it seems like it only does it in second to third gear, I'll have to keep an eye on it when I drive home but that's what it seemed like.
Oh buddy yep thats the 2-3 shift flare do a valve body gasket and a shift kit i recommend a ford gasket that is bonded

So I absolutely hate transmission work, is it hard to do or is there anything I could seriously f**k up? Might be better to have a shop do?

Honestly, I would ask other forum members as I have done it on a 02 explorer it wasn't that bad but kind of a pain in the rear to be honest

Do I need to drop the transmission completely or is everything pretty accessible?

imo it aint bad of a job, the buggest thinng imo is drillin the hole, but even that aint bad.

Valve body work is a GOOD THING
because 90% of the issues with these transmissions can be fixed through the pan and VB
It will save so many headaches/rebuild if you get the issues sorted and the updated parts installed now
Do not be afraid to drop the pan, it can be done cleanly (without mess) and it is really simple stuff to perform. Once you drop a valve body and install new solenoids, updated gaskets, new filter, etc etc and you actually fix your 5r55e, you will be like "wow I should have done this sooner"

Agreed, refresh everything while you’re in there. I like to replace the check balls, accumulators, servos, solenoids, gaskets, etc.

I have a 4R70W truck that I bought from a guy dirt cheap bc the trans wasn’t shifting right. I put the truck on ramps, pulled the VB out, did all of the above…15k later it’s still driving and shifting like new.

It’s a messy job, but not hard

Doing the internal VB stuff is tricky, that and the accumulators are harder and more tedious things to do for someone new to trans work. I've been telling people for decades to do those items yourself at home. I have had multiple Fords with high mileage that I did the trans work shortly after buying them. The only trans failures I have had were two, both after about 75k miles of mail route delivery. My V8 truck lost 3rd and 4th gears, and all I had made time for when I bought it, was a deep pan and new Amsoil ATF, and filter(about 14-15 quarts). That's the truck I got to replace my Mountaineer as a project, it'll get the six speed 6R.

The rear diff is done, it went fairly smoothly except the carrier pin nut is stripped to all hell in the old one and I can't get the backing plates for the disc brakes off, but the Ford dealer here ordered some for about $46. We also ended up pretty much destroying the parking brake cables, so either I don't get parking brakes anymore or I go insane rebuilding the shoes and cables.

those parking brakes drove me nuts. do yalls have safety check? imo parking brake is something i use everytime i park basically,, even though the pawl is strong, i have trust issues with that ;) which park did you destroy, the cable going to the pedal or the part at the end with all the springs and shoes and what not? they were a pain, but i did them with the axles still in place, wouldve been so much easier without it

I've lost brakes at some point with everything I own. I refuse to drive a car with no parking brake. It's saved my ass many times

yep, i hate those electronic parking brakes now, i wonder what happens with those if i lose brake, and eben if it just so hapens to work (half the time it doesnt first push) its then fully locked and i cant "modulate" it like the standard. i mean usually it doesnt have the strength to lock the wheels up, but ya get the idea ;)

I also insist on having a functioning parking/emergency brake

God forbid you have a brake failure that results in a fatality or serious injury, if they find out you didn’t have the emergency brakes installed….?

The lawyers will be salivating

I believe most of the electronic e-brakes are in the ABS loop, so it’ll stop you without much drama

Ok fair point on the parking brakes, so I can't get the axle shafts off the old diff and I'm pretty sure those shoes are shot anyways, so do I just need new shoes, the springs that hold them together and the cables?

think this is what i used when i r&r the brake, was a pain with axles in but better probably without, not sure.
