I would like to know how much it would cost at a ford dealership or transmission shop.

SHouldnt be much. Any reason youdont want to do it yourself? Its 100x easier than an oil change

all you need to do is remove the drain plug and fill plugs to drain out the fluid. replace the drain plug, and fill with fluid till its at the top of the fill plug hole. at least im 90% sure. check your owners manual or pick up a chilton or haynes manual for your truck.

it is exactly as INH describes..

The hardest part is filling up the transfer case - there isnt much room! But get creative, maybe use a long clear hose .. 5 feet should do .. one end of the hose hooked up to a funnel and the other stuffed a few inches into the transfer case's fill hole, then put a catch pan directly underneath the transfer case and fill up the funnel until the transfer case starts leaking from the fill hole.. then as quickly as u can, pull the hose out of the transfer case and put the fill hole's screw back in to plug the fill hole. its messy tho and wear some gloves (try not to touch the fluid).

I have used old gear lube (rear end lube) bottles for the same thing. They usually have a long squirt tip on them. Just fill one with the correct fluid and go for it.

I don't know for sure what fluid goes in your t-case. Its too new for me.

mercon / dexron III <-- at least thats whats recommended for the 2nd generation explorers (95-02?), dunno about the 3rd generations.

yes..auto transmission fluid (same as the trans) is what my old 89 ranger called for. It had a BW 13-50 manual t-case though. I had no idea if the newer ones were similar.

Is there a reason you're doing this?

My buddy was quoted $60 for the local Ford Stealership to do it, we did it for less than $15 in about 20 minutes.

I have a 5 part funnel that I got a wally world that has a long flex tube part that comes off on the bottom. That long flex tube attached perfectly to the top of the bottle of fluid. You screw the tube onto the bottle, put the bottom end in the hole, then raise the bottle up higher than the hole and squeeze. Repeat until fluid starts coming out the top hole where the tube is going in. cap it off, wipe it off and viola! your done.
