1998 explorer sport
Started a serious project almost 2 years ago and ran out of money to do it how I wanted but now having a decent job it's time to finish it I have a 98 explorer sport that my grandpa and I swapped a 5.0 into but I wanted 4x4 rather than awd so we got a push button shift bw 4406 out of an f150 my question Is how do I wire it up to my existing knob on the dash and will drive shafts from another vehicle work or do I have to have then custom made? thanks in advance

didnt think a e4406 would fit. the manual one is tight as hell to begin with. when you get it all together post pictures please!!!!!!
as for the wiring, member ahodges has done a e4406 on his, but his truck is a 96. he might be able to help you.
as for the drive shafts you can use the f150 front with a conversation u joint. the rear shaft your sol. you will have to get one made.

I'm doing the same thing with my 97 V8 sport , getting it to fit is the issue but its only three more inches for the shift motor , I have measured and plan on moving my fuel tank back , as for the wiring ,everything I have found says it will be plug and play with the original GEM and 4405 wiring and plug

The electronic shift on a 4406 is the same as the factory 4405, plug and play. I think ford is still using the same shift motors today! The only thing you wont have with the e4406 when using the Explorer GEM is the mechanical lock into 4X4 high. You will only have 4X4 high through the electronic clutch (brown wire). It isn't a big deal though because my 4X4 high works fine and has never slipped.

Good luck shoe-horning it in a sport though!

Its going to be tight lol but I already have experimented with my tank and know I will be able to slide it back , I'll have to drill new holes for the strap and a front mount and trim the filler neck hoses but there is enough slack in the pump lines and harness , my rear shaft is a cut down expedition unit ,
