I considered a remote start, but I often crank my SOHC before letting it fire in order to get oil pressure up. And hacking into the harness to install a generic remote start…ugh.

I'd definitely want to DIY rather than trusting some kid at Best Buy, though doing it now versus a newer vehicle... wires get brittle over time.

I had a similar issue with my 2000 Sport. Father in law bought it without the key fob lock set up. Had the dealer install the system (had "Ford" written all over the fobs and manuals), but it was an aftermarket system. I bought it from him. My "hidden" button was next to the OBDII port. I had gone to a waterpark with my kids and the key fob got wet. When I opened the door, the alarm went off. Had to look it up while parked in front of a restaurant with the alarm blaring for about 10 mins.

Okay no problem I'm the 3rd owner and the 2nd owner was friends with the 1st owner and told this book was in the truck when they bought it and according to my vin look up I'm the 3rd owner so if I was lied to about it being to the truck dont be to upset with me but it says for ford Lincoln and mercury security systems so yea

If the first owner drove 150 miles and the third drover 20 miles less, and the third owner drove 15 miles less than the first, what radio station was the second owner listening to?

I found jt in my explorer andi was told I'm only the 3rd owenr and everything uve looked up on the vin says I'm the 3rd owner and the 2nd owner was friends with the 1st owner and was told the book came with the truck and the point of the button according to the book is for when u get it serviced so u dont have to give them ur chipped key and for valet purposes for the same reason and it's in case ur theft system or key chip malfunction so you are still able to use your vehicle u paid for it only put in different places so it makes it so a thief cannot steal it easily cuz I promise you that I've looked up every single possible way to by pass ur anti theft system for hours on end so I didnt have to spend 200+ just for a new key or computer but never found it my boyfriend actually when his buddy came to jump us asked for the owners manual to properly jump us my boyfriend.gave him the wrong book cuz this one actually says owners manual also and they read it and that's what they found and my boyfriend was showing me something about the battery being lowell making the theft system malfunction and I ended seeing that about the button sorry it long but yea

This is an add-on or aftermarket security system, probably doesn't do a thing to disable PATS.

My '00 had a "Ford" vehicle security system installed when I bought it from the previous owner and I vaguely remember it had one of these buttons screwed through the bottom of the dash by the parking brake release.

It was a very obnoxious system that emitted a deafening chirp upon locking or unlocking and required hitting the unlock button a second time before you could start the vehicle -- I hacked it out less than 24 hours after buying the truck because it was driving me crazy.

Don't let the Ford sticker fool you, it was very carelessly installed with splice connectors and zip ties. Dealer add-on or not, these are definitely aftermarket alarm systems in my mind.

There probably ISN’T one. You can’t defeat PATS in any simple method.

You need to check if the light blinks a code. That’ll tell you wether or not it’s a receiver problem, or if it’s not recognizing the key. You’ll most likely need a locksmith to come and program your key into the system.

Boxes with a disable button, seem to be for an additional security system, to disable that, but not to disable PATS.

Look over past topics in this forum as there are several about PATS problems and resolutions. Here's a post with the Workshop Manual, PATS section attached as a PDF:

98 Explorer cranks doesn’t start security light flashing

Just got a 98 4.0 SOHC Eddie Bauer from my neighbor with 70k, original owner. It has one factory key and one copy both appear to be big head keys. It has been sitting for about 5-7 years. It cranks fine but has security light flashing so PAT'S problem I assume.

I'm the original owner of my 98 XLT and I've crawled over just about every inch of it in those 25 years and it doesn't have this button. If yours does, then it was not standard on these, or even a popular option. If it were someone here would know about it and there would have been discussions on it by now.

I think your best bet is to troubleshoot the pats system, using the troubleshooting threads in this group. I've done all the maintenance on mine (except when the rear end went out when I was out of town and the dripping oil filter adapter which I couldn't get to on my back) And I had to bite the bullet a few years back and have the "PATS module" (dont remember the real name) replaced. Even though I had troubleshot the issue to that module I had no way to reprogram it and just paid ford to replace it a program the new one.

Welcome. Turn the ignition key to ON, and watch the dash as you do that. Notice the "THEFT" light, does it come and and does it flash? If it flashes, then the engine cannot start because the PATS system has disabled the fuel. The key used must have a code that the PATS checks and recognizes each time the key is turned to ON.

So watch the THEFT light, be sure that it stays on but doesn't flash when the ignition is turned on.

There is no override button on these models, not from the factory. I have had three of these completely apart, none have anything like that first post(the manual pictured) described.
