Is there any good high temp exhaust patch tape out there ? My father gave me a 1997 Explorer 5.0 AWD, but theres an exhaust leak on the small pipe that comes off the passenger side manifold. Its a thin pipe, with a sort of ribbed section, that developed a crack. Looks like an easy fix, but is the muffler tape out there at the auto parts store crap, or will it work ? Replacing the pipe looks like a tough job.

I've used the muffler tape, and it'll hold for a while. There's also a putty available to seal exhaust leaks, that works fairly well. If that's an EGR leak, a patch might hold for a long time. Worth a try......

Be sure and thank your dad, that sounds like a nice ride.

re

I thanked him so many times he told me to shut up already haha. The thing only has 29k on it; unbelieveable. He has 4 cars. drives each one for 3 months outta the year...And I think it is an emissions / EGR thing where the crack is. So I might make it a daily driver, or sell it. Haven't decided.

The egr pipe isn't real difficult to replace.
A new one from Ford is about 55 bux, all you need is a 1 1/16" wrench,

Remove the airbox for easier access.

Also, be aware of the "cracked exhaust manifold" The cracks occur under the heat shielding.

re:

It does look like it might be easy to get outta there, but it looks welded in on the topside, away from the manifold. I have to really get in there and look. The place where it connects to the manifold looks like it might be a ***** to get out too, kinda rusted on. I would be concered about breaking it off. If the hack job patch i put on there doesnt hold up, I may try to get it out. Im going to go take a pic of it; and make sure Im explaining the right part..

re: fixed for now

I used some metallic exhaust tape. wrapped it a few times. no leak now; very quiet....we'll see if it hold up. but so far so good. thx for the replies !
