Exhaust Resonator Removal

has anyone just cut this off on a 4.0 v6 and left everything else stock? I might have to try this this weekend on my truck until I can afford a full flowmaster system again for my new truck

And does anyone know the diameter of the stock piping so I can replace it with pipe?

cut WHAT OFF? the resonators, there are mopre then 1 and they are before the cats
A flowmaster cat back will only make it better, but cutting off the resonators and replacing them with tube has nothing to do with a cat back exhaust, they are before the cat

Ok I have two questions

What is that can thing RIGHT after the exhaust muffler?

What exactly is the resonator?

Just did some research and on the 99's they are right after the muffler. It looks like a little can. Helps reduce the sound of the exhaust fumes. I am going to cut it out this weekend and replace it with some flex pipe at discount auto parts. I plan on getting exhaust in a month neways. I will tell you guys how it goes. The po mans exhaust. I might just go to wal mart and buy a tip! ha!

BTW This is the exhaust I had on my old truck, dual 2.25" piping with 50 series flowmaster muffler. Sounds good when you get on it but no drone at cruising/highway speeds which is what i wanted

My '00 5.0 has the resonator(after the muffler) and no muffler. I think it sounds awesome. It doesnt pop or anything like that... just a smooth, mustangish sound. I can't hear it over my tires at speeds over about 50. I just put a y-pipe in place of the muffler and put a tip on. I cant tell any difference in power. I tried to make a video of the exhaust, but my camera doesnt have good low frequency response, so you can't tell what it sounds like on video.

monmix, do you have a v6 or v8? have you done this with stock exhaust?

Monmix has a V6. I don't think that the sports ever came with V8s.

This is my "muffler".

nice justin nice, hows it sound

I cut out my resonator today and it really didnt make that much of a difference. Hell it was only 15$ for everything but still. You can really tell a difference when its idling, it has a deep rumble to it. Also when revved in park it sounds so nice but when your driving and even when you get on it, it doesnt sound any better/louder than stock

Pros: Cheap, big diff in start ups/idling/revving sound. Only costed $15 for all the parts and about 2 hours of my time. Lost 3 lbs of weight which means extra hp! muhaha (joke)

Cons: Wasnt the biggest difference in the world as I had hoped. No difference in sound under acceleration/cruising.

Over all: If you have lots of time on your hands and your a mod freak but dont want to pay for exhaust... do it. Other wise save up for a real exhaust

Parts bought:
2 1/8th inch flex pipe

1 2 18th inch clamp (flex pipe kit already came with one)

1 unversial exhaust pipe hanger (Since the flex pipe wasnt sturdy enough like stock pipe was, I had to hang the part by the exhaust pipe. There was already a screw there so it worked perfectly.)

If anyone wants pictures of it to try it, then let me know. Other wise I wont even bother

My truck is a 1999 4.0L SOHC V6
