Experts, I need some help.. (Rear axle assembly)

When going back together with everything it's important to "Wet" the seal faces with Gear oil before putting the axle back inside the tube.

That way you don't "Burn" a seal hen you first start driving it.

Seals are only on the outer sides of the tubes.

Some 8.8 Assemblies came with a small rubber O-Ring under the C-Clip on the carrier side.

I never put those back on and have never had problems.

Wonder if that's the rubber bits in the tube.

This last piece is really stuck in there. Black spot near differential end.

It's been in there for a while but if your OCD like me you'll get it out...

LOL!

Think this was culprit for rubber bits.

Anywho.. Got both finished and new xpin bolt installed.

Great job. Bearings can wear, and look good, but be undersized causing slop and vibration.

When the cross pin is out, try to only turn the differential slowly and keep the spider gears in place. It's not too hard to put the spider gears back in, they go in in pairs. It just takes some time to get the hang of putting one in and also get the opposite one in the right opposing location. Take your time, you'll figure it out.

@CDW6212R I think this is the word you meant to say...

OP - With a little gear oil in the spider gear washers they will stick amazingly well. How to the axle shafts look wear the bearings ride?

I hope this fixes your problem.

There’s a pic of the axles where the bearing runs.

That's a relief.

Thank you all for the help - I may have a few more questions here and there yet but overall I just need to swap it back in. I'm waiting on some brake lines and then new ubolts... Really annoying because I just put new ones in..but I know you can't re-use.

One thing I noticed immediately after install is how easily those axles spin by hand... almost effortless.

Hope that's a good sign :D

Get a cheap used rear-end from a salvage yard.

I tried to repair mine only to have many new problems. It's not worth the aggravation.
A used one can cause just as much aggravation. This whole thing started with a used rear end.

Yup, that's why I wish I would have swallowed my fear and just did my bearings...

On the plus side i did learn how to swap a rear end. Replace leaf spring bushings and all that.

But I have 900 dollar junk axle I don't think I'll be able to return. Maybe with my newfound knowledge I can fix it up and sell it locally on clist or something.

If you bought your junk axle with a credit card and/or through PayPal dispute the purchase. Worked for me on a $750 junk axle I was sold.

When I swapped my axle for a $300 salvage yard axle I reused the u-bolts and didn't even disconnect by brake lines. That was 3 years ago and I haven't had any problems other than needing to replace one of the axles in the salvage unit.

A trick I always do , i hope i caught you soon enough.

The axle splines are very sharp, and will cut the seal if they contact it. So, what I do is wrap a piece of 8.5 x 11 office paper around the spines tightly where it fully covers the splines and goes up the axle about 3" or more.Slide the axle in past the splines, then pull the paper out.

I initiated a charge back through my cc company so we will see what happens.

My beef is that I'm not paying to return it lol

That was my beef as well. I couldn't convince them to pay the return shipping, but my credit card company was. I was very happy that they went to bat on my behalf. I've never had to dispute a CC purchase before and I didn't know what to expect. Thank you Chase.

Well done with the whole axle etc, project. The axle you pictured is okay, the bearing riding surface is still intact, not worn away yet. The surface will change appearance and look kind of sand blasted first, and then begin to wear down if the bearings are left in longer.

Good tip on the splines Jon, I've had a shallow cut or two on a hand before, the axle slipping out of my hand putting it down etc. I'll try that this weekend, Monday, or Tuesday.

Do contact your CC company and let them know the JY rear is bad, and the seller doesn't want to pay to ship it back. That lays the foundation with you and the CC company, so they have all of the facts when they respond to the seller(who will respond to the CC reverse charge). That shortens the process and puts the seller on the defense, with the CC company actively helping you.
