Ok, after today i am pretty much sold on the idea of stuffing a powerstroke in a first-gen. I'm not sure if I want to tear apart the CNG explorer to do it, as i only have a few weeks before i have to get rid of the other chassis. So, i may have to score another truck to do this. Maybe even the ranger. I'm not really sure what the application is gonna be here, the PSD may be too heavy for an offroad rig, maybe it will just be the all time king of towing explorers!

Any input? Anyone? Bueller?

That'd be killer, but it's going to be one helluva squeeze... The PSD is a tall, long, HEAVY engine... I'd look at taking the donor frame and bolting the Explorer over top of it... it'd probably be less work than trying to stuff it into the front end of an Ex, and then beef up the front end so that it doesn't collapse under the strain....

If you go for it, good luck!

PSD's are monsters. They have to pull the cab off a Super Duty to install one. I would go with a 4bt Cummins.

the engine wieghs more than a thousand pounds. It would be cheaper to bolt the body on the frame and transfer the wiring harness and dash into the ex.

Computer controlled engines are a pain in the butt, good luck.
a 4bt cummins is what im considering in a year or two.

Go big or go home! I've been thinking about putting a 6 liter in my non-existent '56 F100.

I am kinda confused at how i could beef up the front end to hold that *******. I picked a 7.3 head up off a motor today, and realized the weight i'm dealing with.....

how about a B2 PSD:D The short wheel base may help the weight issue, as well as the gas tank out of your way;)

Nah you know what, i'm not doing this because i thought it was realistic, I just want to see how big of an engine i can cram in there. But i am trying to buy froader's rig, and if i can't come up with 5500, i can definitely come up with 1500 for the B2.....

Buy Colin's first;) That's more important! The B2's is nothing special. It will get sold, don't worry. and I'm not hurting to sell it right away, I'm fine on money and it's not costing me anything to have it right now.

There are a lot of swaps in the making right now. I say go for it. Not sure how to yet but do it

I think i may cage the front for the motor. I'm just creating a weird vehicle here, not actually trying to end up with a useful truck. I just wanna be able to say i have the most ridiculous motor..........

Would be an awesome project :D

My approach would be to remove everything from the chassis forward and worry about the body panels and the under the hood accessories after the engine is in. Everything will have to be fabbed (including the engine mount) so you might as well get everything out of your way.

Also, remove the coil springs and refab everything so it’s compatible with a set of springs which are available at different rates. Or go coil-overs but obviously make sure you can find a range of coil-over springs at very high spring rates.

The transmission tunnel will probably have to be modified too. If you’re going manual transmission, the New Venture 4500 (NV4500) is one of the best you can find out there. If the 7.3 comes with a turbo, its usually located at the top and the back the block, and offset towards the passenger's side a little, which means you'll probably need to relocate it -- not only for clearance, but easier maintenance down the road.

If the Explorer is a 4wd, swap the front axle for a 2wd system (either TTB, SLA, or a mono-beam 2wd). The axle (especially for the TTB or mono-beam) might also need to be moved forward depending on where the engine ends up – not only to clear the oil pan or whatever, but also for better weight distribution.

Of course the 8.8 will have to be swapped out for either the Sterling 10.25/10.50 or the Dana-70 – at least.

You don't think an 8.8 rear end will work? I don't plan on actually towing with this thing.

Oh I thought you were :D

PSD would destroy an explorer 8.8

I actually hunted for a little bit when I was reasearching my motor build for a 302/desel conversion but I didn't find any.
