Fuel Filter tool not working!!!!!!

Used metal removal tool

I tried with the plastic tool and didn't think they were expanding out the clips enough on the connector. The slide it on with your finger and push pull, click pull method wasn't near enough force. I found the metal (aluminum I found out since it bent) one was better for applying tools to. I used a (not kidding) big BBQ fork since it had thick prongs that curved under the removal tool on one side and had a large handle for leverage, and a rubber handle of a hand tool since it fit between the BBQ fork prongs on the other side. I heard the little metal tool click when it engaged the clips then pried on it. It didn't look like it moved but I took the filter into my hands and yanked on it and turned it and it finally slowly came off. I read that it pops off on here and mine didn't at all. I tend to be slower on these things since I don't use brute force, afraid I'll break something, and it took me a few tries until I finally got it. The emptied out gas from inside the filter was a gray cloudy mess of stuff in there. Glad I changed it.
It was hard to do on a crawler under the truck with the front end up high. I've heard if you get it on a lift it's much easier.
I hope this helps you.

Okay so I had a 92 Explorer in my garage last week for a new fuel pump

I have replaced ALOT of Ford fuel pumps and filters... always using my trust trusty Ford brand line disconnect tools ( I have two sets, one got old and worn out so I bought another)

the first fuel line went like clockwork... no problem
The second (larger) line would not budge
After messing with it for an hour, easily an hour, I tried another approach

I remembered a friend of mine saying that a chapstick tube worked for him... so I searched around the house using the tool as my guide... nothing! Chapstick tube is way too small for this size connector.

Well the cap to a sharpie marker is the EXACT right size.

So I cut a slit in it, cut the closed end off so I could fit it over the line...

2 seconds later the fitting was apart.

SHARPIE MARKER CAP = FITS PERFECT, it released the spring in 2 seconds.

It now resides in my tool drawer along with the disco tools

Ditto, I have also found that odd household items can be a better fit than the proper tool. Cheap tool makers I blame for that.

...The tale of 2 fuel filters..

...I bought 2 filters this weekend...One for my X and 1 for the Ranger as it started sputtering last week...Needless to say I threw a code in the Ranger today so I decided what a perfect time to swap filters on both trucks...

..I went to Autozone and paid like 10 bucks for a set of 6 various sized plastic disco tools...I got back and started on the X...It's got fancy braided fuel flex lines and I tried for about 45 minutes and couldn't get either line off...

...Next was the Ranger...It has two types of fittings....The old style with the white plastic clip and the new disco type...I fought with the disco for about 20 minutes and finally got it off...

...I guess I will be heading to Napa this week to see what plastic tool they have to get the filter off the X...:splat:

I went through the same damn thing when I changed mine. An hour into it with the plastic tool I gave up and walked down the street to a neighbor that is a mechanic. He walked up, handed the tool back to me, climbs under the truck and said "you don't need the tool, just use your hand..." Sure as **** 2.3 seconds later he hands me the filter. He then explained and showed me how he did it, both of which I didn't understand. Screw it, he can change next time. I still don't understand how he did it...

i used that POS tool for about 15 minutes, and i finaly got it off. but i dont think to tool did a GD thing. because i finally gave the filter a tug, and it came off.

It took me more time to replace the fuel filter than it did to replace 4 calipers and rotors (over 4hrs.), I was afraid I was gonna break the plastic tool ! What a friggin fu#@in PITA ! LOL But I'm sure next time I'll be able to do it in about 45 minutes now that i know what to look for. Remove the 2 on one side and then, slide the tool in and now with the filter hanging, really pull on it ! It'll come off and it'll probably take 30 - 45 minutes to complete from start to finish.

Im with mussin the cheap plastic disconnects worked best i orig bought the plier type and it did nothing i got the plasitics and you have to actually push the line towards the filter then push the disconnect in the line and then the line will come off in one motion...i was in the same boat, the forum rules...

good post.

i have a 04 and got the metal tool. Havent touched it yet though. But i am full of information and will post back in the spring!

good luck out there.
