Used metal removal tool
I tried with the plastic tool and didn't think they were expanding out the clips enough on the connector. The slide it on with your finger and push pull, click pull method wasn't near enough force. I found the metal (aluminum I found out since it bent) one was better for applying tools to. I used a (not kidding) big BBQ fork since it had thick prongs that curved under the removal tool on one side and had a large handle for leverage, and a rubber handle of a hand tool since it fit between the BBQ fork prongs on the other side. I heard the little metal tool click when it engaged the clips then pried on it. It didn't look like it moved but I took the filter into my hands and yanked on it and turned it and it finally slowly came off. I read that it pops off on here and mine didn't at all. I tend to be slower on these things since I don't use brute force, afraid I'll break something, and it took me a few tries until I finally got it. The emptied out gas from inside the filter was a gray cloudy mess of stuff in there. Glad I changed it.
It was hard to do on a crawler under the truck with the front end up high. I've heard if you get it on a lift it's much easier.
I hope this helps you.
