Well I'm gonna be getting an Escort Passport 8500 Radar Detector, and wanna hard-wire it. I want it to be a safe installation as to not damage this expensive equipment so I wanna fuse it. Is it easiest wiring it into the fuse panel? How would I go about doing this? Thanks!

If you get the smart cord or the standard cord they will both have inline fuses already. I suggest the smart cord though.

I'm getting the smart cord, but wanna use it, so I'm thinking about the smart cord direct-wire.

I just looked at the direct-wire and it looks like it has a fuse, so I'll just use a source probably. What I really want it to do is go on when the car goes on though, so what could I wire this to that would be fairly simple?

Where are you mounting it? I suggest high on the windshield. Upper left if it will still point straight forward or maybe above the rear view mirror. In my old Daytona I had it above the mirror with a smart hardwire cord. The alert box was velcroed to my window pillar moulding up high. It was the perfect spot. With the detector in dark mode the alert box's light was still visable and the mute button was an easy tap. As for power, do you have any overhead components? Compass, Temp? These come on with ignition power.

I've got a '94 so I don't think the overhead consoles were even an option. I'm mounting the radar on the visor and the smart cord screen probably on the dash in front of the steering wheel. Since I'm buying the hardwire kit the smart cord doesn't plug into the cigarette lighter port.

I'm planning on buying the same radar detector... where does anyone suggest I mount it, and which kit should I buy (hard wire or cigarette adapt)?

The hardwire option frees up the cigarette lighter, so get that one. Just get some quick disconnects in case you have to removeit in a hurry.

I figured out I can just shove the power wire into an Ign port in the fuse panel. Simple enough.
