Here is my dilema that im having. When i was a stanghead we all discussed how Explorers intakes are similar to cobra and gt-40 intakes. The lower intake is practically identical. I was wondering if anyone has installed a GT-40 upper intake on stock explorer intake?
Is it worth doing that at all?
would it make any sort of difference in performance?

I remember people doing X intakes because they had bigger runners than stock Stang and cheaper than buying a cobra or GT-40 intakes.

If i was to swap my upper intake (both for looks and perf) how much trouble am i looking into when doing that?

I'd take the $$$ spent on aftermarket intakes and put it into other parts of the truck. The Explorer intake, especially with a ported lower to improve the flow ratings on #4 and #5 inlets are easy to do with a dremel or air tool with a packet of flap wheels. After that, runs killer on a Mustang, and the same as the Cobra, I've had tehm both on the Mustang...

My Mustang had a set of GT40P heads, headers, explorer upper and lower, roller rockers, flows, 3.73's, speed density, and ran a stock cam too- ran 12.70- 12.80's all night, not powershifting or pushing hard. Cheapest way to roll- and it ran the same times on the Cobra upper, with the slight loss of low end torque rating on the dyno- slightly better up top, but it was ported too.

Everyone we raced got pissed because we kept beating them with stock Ford parts, and kept trying other intakes, heads, etc... Didn't matter- Trick Flow, Holley, Edelbrock/Typhoon (Chinese version of the Edelbrock) ... One guy even sold his car. The difference is so small, it's a driver's race on a Mustang, so I'd bet it's even smaller on an Ex. Look at the crossover point on the following chart, and compare it to the power band where you drive your Ex.

My answer- no, you won't notice anything worth the money and time to do it vs. what you have.

Here is a review/results from a Typhoon Intake installation... Last paragraph says it all, and if a ported Cobra intake is just about equal to a ported Edel-phoon intake, so is an unported one. And since the Explorer lower is the same as a Cobra lower, and the upper isn't much off, keep what ya got.

hmmm.............Sounds like im leaving it as is and taking my money and buy some other goodies for my 4 wheel pimp mobile!

Thanx guys!

PS- yeah, headers are next on my hit list!

Headers are definitely the best bang for the truck/buck. :)

Ditto, keep the stock intake.
