There's a big gap between book and what I had into it... like always.

He wants to make it "right". Where do I start?? It's been a week.

I say he owes you another explorer, and shop repairs for a year (labor included) to avoid a lawsuit.

But that's just me. I'm not vengeful, but I am all about making it right.

I noticed damage to the doors and below the glass on the cargo area. I guess you could replace the doors and roll on with the rest of the damage if it didn't bother you. This is assuming the truck isn't already totalled. If it is I'd pull the motor and trans and whatever else you think you would need to salvage into another Explorer. Granted storing the motor and trans is prob a difficult issue for you living where you do. That is unless you have a really good friend with a garage that would let you do so.

...what kind of $ number, would you put on it? I've always replaced failed parts with premium parts - Ford or better. The list of some of the stuff is on the very first post. It was no show truck, and not free of its short comings but, for the most part it was solid transport for home and work. And, most of all, (without too much hyperbole) a cherished member of the family... a dear friend. That may sound sappy and exaggerated but after this accident you'd be surprised at the emotions that come up!! My 9 yo boy burst into tears when I told him the bad news!! We loved our truck! Probably our mistake!!

I wouldn't necessarily put a number on it. I would start off with the shop replacing your rig, the rest could be hashed out later.

If it were me I'd almost keep an attorney in my back pocket on the chance the shop tries to skate out of making it right.

I know what you mean I love my Explorer. Mine has it's moments as well, but nothing that leaves me stranded. I almost t-boned a lady a 55mph just a few days ago.... It would not have been my fault but I didn't want to think about the outcome, as she was elderly and in a Focus type of car.
