i have a 97 v8 5.0 explorer, heres my problem i hooked it up to the code reader and it gave me codes----430,340 one was the cam sensor so i replaced the whole stub and cap, the other was a cat on bank 2. i have not messed with the cat yet because im not sure which one is bank 2. anyway after i replaced the cam sensor i still have the same rough idle and mis. i have put new wires on and changed the coil paks. my question is this could the rough idle and mis come from a bad cat?has anyone else had any problems like this. thanks this site is awesome

Bank 2

P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

The banks are determined by the location of cylinder #1. On the V8 cylinder #1 is on the passenger side, therefore Bank 1 is on the passenger side and Bank 2 is on the driver side.

P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

The following is from the 1997 Ford OBD System Operation Summary:

"First, the relationship between successive Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) events is evaluated to determine whether the PIP signal is rational.
Too large a change in 3 successive PIP indicates a missing or noisy PIP signal (P0320). Next, the CMP edge count is compared to the PIP edge count. If the proper ratio of CMP events to PIP events is not being maintained (for example, 1 CMP edge for every 8 PIP edges for an 8-cylinder engine), it indicates a missing or noisy CMP signal (P0340). Finally, the relationship between IDM edges and PIP edges is evaluated. If there is not an IDM edge (coil firing) for every PIP edge (commanded spark event), the PCM will look for a pattern of failed IDM events to determine which ignition coil has failed. If the ignition coil cannot be identified or if the engine is running and there are no IDM edges, the IDM circuit is malfunctioning (P1351)."

The above didn't help me much but maybe it will prompt someone with V8 experience.

I know from posts by other members that the V8 will run without the CMP sensor. The PCM uses it to time when the injectors pulse. If the CMP sensor is defective then the injectors still pulse but it may be at the wrong time and less effective. Have you cleaned the MAF sensor?

yes cleaned the MAF and no difference. took it for a ride lastnight when i got home i crawled under and noticed the bank 2 cat was cherry red

Hot cat

I don't have much first hand experience with cats but I suspect that to get one red either the airflow is partially blocked or the mixture on that side is way rich. If it were that rich you should have a corresponding DTC. Read your codes again and write down all of them. If you have dual exhausts put your hand near each pipe outlet and compare the airflow.

i dont have dual exhaust,i punched the cat out and it didnt make a difference.maybe the o2 sensor? im gonna check the codes again monday or tuesday. i did run it again and the rough idle is still there but the pipe didnt get red again so maybe the cat was bad but like i said the rough idle is still there and im at a loss. im to the point now where i might have to break down and take it to the shop and let them hook it up to the computer. i was hoping somone else had the same problem so we could compare notes. but thanks for all your help. if you have anymore info please let me know thanks again

Summary

Ok so you've cleaned the MAF sensor, replaced the CMP sensor, ignition wires and coil pack, and punched a hole in the cat.

How long since you've cleaned the IAC valve, changed the spark plugs, replaced the fuel filter and added fuel injector cleaner?

i think im on to something i need to buy a sync tool for the camshaft and try that. i bought the explorer used with the CPS bad when i bought a new cps to put in i just lined it up with the other one and dropped it in, maybe the old one wasnt installed right eitherso im lookin on e-bay now. ill let you know how i make out. thanks

Possible problem

The CMP sensor output allows the PCM to determine when to start the fuel injector pulse. If it is not aligned properly then the injector will not spray when the intake valve is opening. The V8 will still run but the fuel charge in the intake port may be "stale". Here's a thread about buying the sensor, tool and how to use it: Camshaft Position Sensor replacement--a bit of discussion

OK
Bank 2 is driver(left) side as you determined.
The system seems to be running rich. Check the wiring to the bank 2 upstream sensor-it is the one right under the transmission. Sometimes a pin in the pastic plug housing can be pushed back, or, you might discover the wiring is chaffed. Look closely to see if it has touched the exhaust manifold and melted a bit.
You can monitor the 02 sensors switching with a good scanning device which allows datalogging, like a xcal for example.

Now if you want to, you could swap 02 sensors around to eliminate them as the cause of your grief. If your fault code moves to another sensor location, you know the sensor is bad. If the code remains the same, then you know where to start looking. This is a redneck way of troubleshooting, but it could be very effective for someone without a lot of tool resources

To make swapping the sensors easier, remove the center console, slit the carpet into an H under the console to reveal an access panel. Under tha panel will be 3 of the 02 sensor plugs.

Removing the console seems intimidating, but believe me is so simple, and saves so much time--

crank shaft sensor

I had the same problem, rough running at all speeds then fortunately it died in the driveway. I changed the the camshaft sensor & no help, the coil was tested at Auto Zone & it was good. Finally change the Crankshaft sensor and that was the problem, now runs great! 1997 Explorer XLT 5.0. A $17 dollar part.

ok thanks for the info, did you just the cap or the whole stub? cause i have to replace the hole thing then find the sync tool for it. i called all the parts store around here and all of them said it was a dealer part. so i called ford they told me they dont sell it either, so i just went onto e-bay and saw someone selling the cap stub and sync tool for 45.00 so im trying to get ahold of him now

cam sensor question

now i have heard if you drive with the sensor bad it will damage the engine, then i also heard it wont. can anyone set me straight on this.

still not fixed

ok here we go again replaced IAC, MAF,TPS,CPS,COILPACKS,PLUGS WIRES,PLUGS,FUEL FILTER, and still not fixed still has a mis and rough idle. here is the wierd thing after replacing the coil packs and cps and new wires (i did all at the same time) i hooked the battery back up and it ran like new for 5 miles then out of nowhere it started the mis and rough idle again. maybe replace the ecm??????? please help im at my witts end and ready to part with it. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT

Check your thermostat and fluid level. There is a sensor on the thermostat housing that is an input to the ECM. I had my go out (thermostat) and the car will run rough until it is corrected. Good luck!
