High Miles

1996 XLT 4.0 178,000 miles
Around 90% of the miles are highway so I'm sure that helps. I change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles and I use Valvoline DuraBlend or (lately) MaxLife. The first set of tires were GY Wrangler RT/S's (93,000 miles) the second set were GY Wrangler AT/S's (80,000 miles) and I now have Mastercraft (Cooper) Courser A/T's. I had the transmission fluid and filter changed at 100,000 miles and the lower ball joints were replaced at 173,000 miles. The front brake pads were replaced four times and the rear pads twice. The rotors have never been turned. I plan on putting on over 200,000 miles before I replace it.

(ALso tips on making the Explorer last longer would be helpful!)

1995 XLT 4x4
91 XLT 150 000 miles, I bought it in may '00 I have replaced-wiring (melted by exaust)auto hubs (twice),front wheel bearings ,rear shocks, rear brakes, washer pump (front) wiper motor(back) & Pinion and carrier bearings in rear end (this week!)

Here we go...

New engine (two cracked heads/worn crank)
Two (2)!! power stearing pumps
Voltage regulator
Fuel pump relay
Universals
Brakes (front, rear, roters etc.)
Windshield
Tires
Battery cables
Starter
Starter relay
Ignition
3 door handles
R/A bushings
A/C- compressor, accumulator, hoses, dryer
T-Case Motor
Computer (ECM)
TPI sensor
O2 Sensor
Exhuast
Wheel Bearings
Shocks
Alternator
Theres more too....

I doubt I'd buy another. I don't even go four wheelin alot. It's my family vehicle.

They would be a hell of a good truck if...
1) All came with MANUAL shift 4x4
2) All came with a SOLID front axle- not independant suspension....

my .02 of course.
I AGREE 100%!!!!!

96 Explorer Sport - 91,000 miles

Heater control valve, plugs, wires, air filter, exhuast system, rear shocks, driving lites (a couple times)

Other than that, this thing runs great and is durable as hell!

My input

1992 XLT 4X4 (5 speed)
155,000 Miles

Thermostat
4 Different U-Joints
Upper/Lower Ball joints
A/C Recharge
BUT Not the clutch!

The normal stuff:
Brakes
Shocks
Tires
Belt
Plugs
Battery
Air filter
Exhaust (three times due to NY winters)

Not too bad for the age/miles.... nothing really major!

it makes me laugh when I see see "high mileage" and then "68,000" or something like that. Maybe 68,000 on a '99 model would be high.

My '92 XLT has just over 240,000.....
-rebuilt tranny at 205,000
-two sets of rotors
-several sets of front brake pads
-rear brakes twice
-new radiator at 195,000
-several sets of spark plugs
-new wires a couple of times
-new oil and filter every 3,000 miles (Quaker State 4x4 10w30 & usually a K&N Filter)
-K&N drop-in Air Filter
-Oh...two new heads at 97,000 (they both had tiny cracks)
-Two new exhuast systems
-U-Joints
-Several sets of tires
-Two starter seleniods
-Air conditioning compressor at 180,000
-Replaced shocks a couple of times
-Two new batteries
-Wiring Harness fell down on the driver side exhaust manifold...causing about 12 wires to melt together...and everything electrical to be screwed up. (and a small smoldering fire under the dash), it's pretty strange to touch your brakes and your engine to start. and to also drive around without any brake lights....everyone check that routinely!

---well, that's most of the major stuff. Also had to replace the cd player, a few of the speakers have been replaced too. Just replaced the armrest bracket that had been broken for 6 years. 4wd isn't working right now...but hopefully I'll be able to fix it myself. Damn, after seeing that list, it makes me wonder about how good of an investment my explorer was.

Also, a little reasoning for this is that I did learn to drive on the sprint car track, so I do tend to be a little rough on my Explorer.

'92 (4x4) XLT Explorer
130k miles

I'm encouraged by the mileage many of you are getting. I was hoping to go at least another 100k on mine and it looks like I can if I take of it.

Changed all fluids to synthetic
New radius arm bushings (seems to be common)

Things I need to do:

Find out where i'm loosing coolant
Replace the front rotors
Replace a door hand (inside & out)
Fix the belt squeel

Overall, I am very pleased with how it has held up in retrospect to where I've taken it.

Cheers!

`99 Explorer XL
v6 ohv, 2wd
32,ooo miles
This has been a very reliable and extremely fun vehicle for me.
Visits to the service dept:
-steering column smoking, replaced a shorted switch
-phantom wipers would turn on by themselves, replaced a loose switch.
-firestone tire recall, replaced with Goodyear MPV
-broken armrest(my fault) but ford replaced free of charge :)

MODS:
-Superchip
-drilled airbox, K&N filter
-Magnaflow exhaust with 2.5in pipe
These mods gave me noticeable improvement in throttle response and ecceleration. As a plus, my gas mileage has also improved.

oops...im gonna have to make an edition to mine....make that 2 starters.....

High mileage Explorers

'94 Sport 4.0L Mazda 5spd 2wd (bought used 12/99)

139K miles
-cleaned MAS
-replaced all 4 shocks
-thermostat
-plugs and wires (ACDelco Rapid Fires)
-typical fluid changes
-replaced radius arm bushings
Very reliable truck. This is the second one we've had.

(Previous Explorer - '93 XLT 4.0L 2wd auto)

125K miles (when sold 6/00)
-replaced MAS
-replaced O2 sensors
-replaced shocks
-replaced thermostat
-plugs and wires (ACDelco Rapid Fires)
-typical fluid changes
Unfortunately we had to sell to get something larger. At the time the trans w/ acting up in the cold mornings.

'95 2wd, 4 door XLT: 103,500 miles

Repairs:
Front end alignment: ball joints replaced, pricey Ford caster/camber adjustment kit installed since it was its first alignment
Windshield
Mass Air Flow sensor
Cruise Control Brake Sensor (leaking brake fluid)
Front and Rear Brake Pads
Shocks
Replaced and repacked front wheel bearings
Burned factory stereo amplifier (removed and thrown away)

Tranny scare: gave me the flashing OD off light, but it turned out to be nothing (knocking on wood) good luck with the tranny thus far.

Routine stuff:
Oil and filter, tranny fluid and filter, fuel filter, air filter, rear diff oil, plugs, wires, wiper blades

Things that don't work and have yet to be figured out and fixed:
Front windshield washer: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't
Cruise control lights on the steering wheel: just the other day, the buttons on the right side lit up for the first time since I've had the truck. The left side is still out though.
Light in headlight switch
Dashboard lights: some are burned out (I think) others very dim.
Cigarette lighter

I have a 94 limited with 130000 miles sporting a three inch lift, 31 inch tires and matching Warn manual hubs. all Ball joints and all bushings were replaced not because of wear, but because it was easier to change while the components were out of the vehicle. (ounce of prevention=pound of cure)
To date, with the exception of the pass. side headlamp which keeps blowing out,(maybe someone knows why?) I have not had any problems with my explorer at all. and I'm just starting to have some tranny problems which i think may be due to the larger tires mated with a tired trans. The engine runs like a top, the ride is awesome, and I wouldn't trade her for the world.

I just hit the BIG 100,000 and still running strong. Just an update.

We've also got a '94 that's identical in color and looks but it's only got 80,000. Where's the fun in that?

Ok, here is a rundown of everything I had to do to my truck so far:
-replace turn signal stalk
-replace 2 ball joints
-cruise control switches replaced 2 times
-recall for stabalizer bar end links
-windshield resealed
-new transmission (92,000 miles) (Actually it's a reman. tranny)
-EPDF sensor (?)
-O2 sensors
-Bosch Plus 4 platnum plugs
-Bosch premiun plug wires
-rear window motor replaced
-air bag crash sensor
-rear stabalizer bar bushings
-4 edelbrock shocks
-T-stat
-temp. sending unit
-the heater control valve thinggy
-more stuff I most likely forgot

Anyway i bought this truck in October, 1999, have drivin about 18,000 miles, and these repairs are what I have had so far. I hope I don't have any more for a while because i don't have any more money!!

I have a 92 XLT with no mods. Generally am happy with it but have had my share of troubles as well. Some of course are because of the roads and the not roads that I drive on and pulling trailers.

Milage: 310,000km (194,000mi)

repairs to date;
A4Ld Transmission @ 165,000km (100,000mi) ouch
Radius arm bushings (x2)
Auto Hubs in '93
Radiator & fan @305,000km (191,000mi)
Timing chain cover gasket @305,000km (191,000mi)
Mass air flow sensor & throttle position sensor
Rear axle seal & bearings (bearings were fine, changed them cause I had it apart) @250,000km (155,000mi)
Front wheel bearings @ 210,000km (130,000mi)
Both upper ball joints @ 250,000km (155,000mi)
All Shocks @ 190,000km (118,000mi)
Alternator @ 220,000km (136,000mi)
2 Batteries 1@160,000km (100,000mi) & 1 @ 308,000km (193,000mi)
A/C High pressure hose @ 270,000km (168,000mi)
Exhaust from Cat. Converter back (x2) they use way too much salt on the roads here in the winter
Rear window (rock bounced off trailer)
Of course the maintenence, plugs, plug wires, filters, oil changes, brakes.

1 Auto hub rebuild from others @ 312,000km (193,800mi)

Engine runs like a clock still, just fill the tank and drive, does not burn a drop of oil between changes. Still starts like a charm in -40 degree weather even when not able to plug in the block heater. I have n reason to doubt that I can't get another 100,000 miles out of it.

Update.....Replaced Cylinder Head (cracked) Nov. 2001@317,000km (197,000mi)

Transmission failing :frustrate Dec 2001, 320,000km(198,800mi) not sure of problem, metal in pan. Needs R&R, not going to rebuild. 92 EX is for sale as is unless I stumble on a replacement tranny at a reasonable price.

Replaced 92 with a 2002 XLT. Certainly not the same machine.

I had this same exact problem while on vacation.......

Tranny blew a front seal, gushed fluid and locked itself into forward, when in reverse and neutral as well......

Ended up costing $2300 or so..............ouch.

I bought my 94 4x4 4 door in Sept of 99 with 65k.....at that time, it needed (taken care of by dealer):
-Several engine sensors
- front brakes
- exhaust from cat back
-driver's side recline latch was broken, sending driver into back seat once in a while....
-windshield was cracked

Since then:
- Auto tranny replaced with rebuilt
-2 windshields (orig was crakced when I bought it) (second was a rock)
-Radius arm bushings
-front lower shock mount studs broke and were replaced
-WARN manual hubs (autos were spinning when cornering
-offroad shocks (cant remeber the name for the life of me...see my "profile")
-rear tow hook mounted on bumper
-in dash CD player, Cobra CB
-Dunlop Radial Rovers 30.90x15.love em!
- K&N drop-in
- spark plugs

Soon:
-Radiator is leaking SOMEWHERE but just a few drops...cant seem to find the location..only leaks when there is a temp change..........
-left lower balljoint has play in it

No idea when:
Engine oil leak from front crank case seal (?) and oil pan...both look like they could be real nightmares....

Otherwise, not TOO bad I guess......Still love the truck.......it now has 77k

1. Tranny broke down no reverse. At first it was making noise when slowing down. Thanks God for the extended warranty. It is now in the shop.
2. Brake front and rear replaced
3. Firestone tire replaced after 60 k miles.
