High milage explorers?

I have a 1996 XLT 4 door. She's a Capricorn, enjoys long strolls through the park and late Autumn sunsets. Dead Link Removed With 82,000 miles under her belt I have replaced:

thermostat,
dash brake light,
speedo light in dash,
passenger window track re-grease (didn't do a thing),
spark plug wires,
rear passenger cargo window (oops) Dead Link Removed,
tires,
brake pads at all fours,
the notorious wiper problem (GEM module and mutlifunction swith), and
oil and filter ever 3,000.
That's it so far!

I have a 1997 Explorer Limited V6 SOHC 5 Speed Auto with 58,657 miles on it. I've had no serious problems, and my Explorer is pretty high mileage. I did have to replace the water pump under warranty because of a slight leak. I've had new brakes put on it once, rotors machined too. I think its ready for new brakes again, and this time I bet I'll have to have the rotors replaced. I also replaced the stock Motorcraft O2 sensors for aftermarket units, because of a CHECK ENGINE light problem in the mountains. I also had the thermostat replaced. The truck gets every scheduled maint. preformed religiously, its washed every week, and waxed twice a year (I need to do that this month), people still think its brand new.

This is our third Explorer. I much prefer the SOHC engine to the thrashy old OHV one. All of our Explorers have been pretty much trouble free.

Mine is a 94, XLT 4x4, 5 sp, 130,000 miles.

I have owned for two years and 50k miles. So far, I have replaced the MAF, and one auto hub, and put spacers under the front springs. Speedometer head needs replaced, and sunroof leaks.

Overall it's been a great truck. My plans are to swap to a 302 and and F-150 5 speed when the engine or trans dies.

Do you guys run synthetic oil? Will synthetic oil help the Explorer last longer? Thanks

95 XLT

Automatic

Rplaced:
Calipers
Rotors
Pads
Dash lights
Torque converter (engine was running rough)
plugs
wires
thermostat

To do list:
Have a loud knock in front end when driving. Checked out the ball joints (upper and lower)and control arm bushings. No surprize there worn. So thats my next task.

Other then that it's been a pretty decent running truck. Oh Ya... the front seat is worn out.

'91 Explorer XLT foor door,Auto trans, Auto hubs

I bought it in April of '99 from a dealer with 102,000 on it. It now has 112,000. I don't think it wasn't taken very good care of.

In the first two weeks that I had it:

Auto hubs
replaced all rocker arms
front wheel bearings
front brakes & pads

Within two months:

the auto trans was rebuilt
TPS
wiring (melted by exhaust)
heater hose
plugs
wires
fuel filter

Luckily it had a two month warranty on it, and believe it or not the dealer covered everything but the plugs, wires, fuel filter, wiring, and heater hose.
I haven't had any problems for the last six months, it runs great, gets 20-22 MPG on the highway, and still works pretty good off road. I am still wanting to modify it for a little more off road use.

1996 XLT with 106K

Other than usual maintenance items, have "rebuilt" radiator, and replaced front diff. seal. Also, had some problems with the rear deck lock seizing, but keep it lubed better cured it. And the tip is broken off the end of the spare tire crank.

Coming up: need to tighten the driver's seat mount and do something about that damn false activation of the driver side front brake.

Minor mods: K&N, airbox cut out, and Flowmaster catback.

Best "features" of an Explorer: Two dog crates fit in cargo area like it was designed for them, 4WD on demand with a switch, seat lumbar control lets me drive 600 miles without a twinge in my back, and the thing looks great and feels right to drive.

Dumbest design element: Roof channels cascade morning dew runoff right down the windshield.

To those who have the early model explorers....overall do you think if someone had $3,000 to spend that they could find a decent Explorer 4 door? If so what would you consider to be "high" milage on an Explorer? Thanks

This is the record of our 1994 XLT, 4WD, automatic (ordered new)
51,000 easy road miles

New windshield installed in first year. I cracked the original while effecting a wiper repair. One of the clips under the cowl released an arm and driver's wiper jammed up on rainy night in heavy traffic (inside lane too). Murphy's law held true!

Rancho 5000 shocks. 32,000
Oil pressure sending switch.
Rebuilt front calipers at 26,000.
Rebuilt rear drums at about 38,000.
Power mirror switch taken care of under recall.
New battery at 32,000
Replaced EGR tube and valve. The tube was very thin from corrosion, and I replaced it and the EGR valve just for preventative maintenance. 49,000 mi.
Replaced O2 sensor, for the heck of it too. 49,000 mi.
Michelin tires at 48,000.

Things to do:
Slight shake in front end at 65 mph. Perhaps it is time for RA bushings.
The 3:27 gear ratio makes the vehicle too sluggish. Will probably move up to 3:55 or 3:73s. Any comments? North central Ohio location.

I change the oil at 3,500 to 4,000 miles, and brake fluid every year or so by bleeding. All other fluids are original.

Overall, it has been pretty good to us. The next 50,000 will tell though.

'91 Mazda Navajo items broke and replaced:

Center Arm rest (19,000 miles, warrantee)
Cracked head (20,000 miles, warrantee)
Brakes (23,000 miles)
4wd woes, 4x4 stuck (24,000 miles warrantee)
R/A bushings (30,000 miles, warrantee)
Gas Filler neck & Rear Hatch Struts (45,000 miles, warrantee)
Windshield (46,000 miles)
4wd woes again, 4x4 lo stuck (46,000 miles, warrantee)
Brakes again (47,000 miles)
Windshield #2 (49,000 miles, dang rocks)
AC problems (56,000 miles, Hose replacement, but never ever worked right)
Alternator (80,000 miles)

Sold at 112,000 miles because it was going to need:

Clutch and Slave cylinder replacement
Power Steering Pump replacment
Recline lever on driver's seat broke off
AC making bad noises (POS system)
4wd was a crapshoot if it would work or not
Couldn't keep IFS in alignment more than 2 months at a time.
Rear end making noises
.... cut my losses and traded it away at this point as it was going to cost more to repair than it was worth...

Mine is a 94 XLT, 4X4.Tow package.

I bought it new as a company vehicle my first day on the job with PageNet. $24.5K. It has towed many things and lots of weight. Daily it carried 2 transmitters and lots of tools. At 102K miles I bought it from the company for 3K. Now 157K miles total, I think I got a good deal. I have just begun the offroad stuff and am not cutting it any slack ( Ask Gjarret or Trckmagic )

Repairs;

Complete AC system about 1K.
Blew front Hubs in the sand launching PWC's $250 total and the how to's from this web site.

Everything else is normal wear and tear stuff.
