High milage explorers?

I have a '91 explorer XLT 4x4 with 187,000 miles on it. I've replaced alot. The stock muffler developed a hole last year, replaced with a glasspack, O2 sensor, Ignition coil, Crankshaft sensor, rotors, master cylinder, Need to replace the hubs and transfer case, 4x4 is shot right now, didn't even get to four wheel with it too much either. Mainly just odds and ends beside the 4x4 stuff. Never had the engine, or tranny rebuilt. The trucks great take a look http://www.umr.edu/~tbm/explorer.html

It has 111000 kilometer, (about 62000 miles)
-front and rear brakes
-front shock(will change all 4 for edelbrock)
-front u-joint(normal wear, I think)
-drop in K&N air filter
-plugs (side gaped like race plug)
-got trans down, replaced slave cylinder, clutch disk, pressure plate(all because of the pilot bearing dying, because clutch was still very good)
-O2 sensor(for prevention)
-egr valve(to much rust)

What is next:
-auto-hubs(maybe for manuals)
-clean MAF(regularly I must say)
-wires for the plugs
-finding what stupid sensor give check engine
-head gasket(leaking a litlle bit)

What would be fun(but no money to do)
-ARB lockers
-4" lift
-33 or 35 tires
-BBK superchearger(big boost)
-Atlas transfer case
-Big fog lites
-Safari bar to hold the item before

Guess I'm getting a late start on this message, but what the hell. I'll feel better.
1992 EB Explorer, 173,000 miles, original engine.
~Replaced:
Front brake calipers
Front brake rotors
Front brake pads (about a thousand times)
Engine fan
Radiator hoses
hmmmm....
Thermostat
Fan belt (twice)
Water Pump (not mechanical failure, some kinda animal got into the engine compartment, long story)
Radius Arm bushings
Universal Joints (all)
Center console bracket
Valve cover gaskets (leaking like crazy)
Rear windshield wiper arm (old one fell off)
Rear liftgate gas-struts
Taillight (does that count? I busted it)
Tires, shocks, plugs, wires, and other stuff that doesn't count

~Other stuff that was fixed:
Auto trans (clunky shifting: leaking seals somewhere)
Transfer case (I think I fixed it? the no-4WD problem)
Rear brake cylinder (blew out, no brakes)
Air conditioner (you name it, it's been replaced)

I'm sure there's a lot more, but that's all I can remember right now. Whew, now I have all that off my chest.

Have done very little with the exception of normal maintenance.

- replaced MAF sensor
- radial arm bushings
- altenator
- battery

I feel pretty fortunate so far with this truck. With as many miles it has its never,(knocking),let me down. It still has the original motor/trans and will 'chirp' the tires on demand. My wife is also impressed with its reliability. I'm glad to have gotten a good one with all the lemons lerking out there.

I feel really fortunate too, I have over 140k on my Explorer, and haven't really had to do much to keep it running! Gotta love it!!

My 95 Limited has about 92,000 miles on it, and since we got it in 98, we've only had to replace the throttle cable and the steering wheel. I dont know what the previous owner did to it, but it hasnt given us much problems, but the 3rd brake light is bad, and one license plate light is out, but its been good 2 us!

91' 4x4, XLT, 120,000+

Overall... I am pleased with the vehicle, done a lot of travelling but at some expense. It has never left me stranded. Maintenance is as follows:
Two trannies
Rear axle brake plates
Two sets of front rotors, Front bearings, Hubs
Radiator
Power steering pump
Front axle housing (damaged while four wheeling}
Engine fan replaced (dealer defect)
Mass air sensor cleaned
Two u-joints
Belts
Replaced valve cover gaskets
A/C dryier, reciever, Hoses, orifice tube
Starter
Alternator
Radial arm bushings
Battery
Front coil springs
Some of these maintenance is related to the conditions exposed when driving off the road. Others are related to normal wear and tear. Hope this information can help you.

i am not sure if we will offer a prioze for the 100th post, but all I can say is I have started this thread back in january and it's been helpful reading what parts tend to wear out on the explorers so we all know what to expect! Thanks for all the posts and I hope this thread continues to grow as this site does!

Perhaps if someone gets the notion, they could evaluate the information and let non-explorer owners know what to expect. 'Long-range vision'...Ford might be able to use it to redesign parts that seem to pop-up more frequently on our broken/needed-to-fix-list. Just a thought!
