Hood paint feels rough.

I've noticed the paint on my hood is rough and like crackled. It's black 96 sport 4x4. Anyone having this problem? Will buffing with rubbing compound fix it?
Also, when drying the hood it has this rainbow kind of effect until completely dry. It shines up great but doesn't feel waxed or clean for that matter. The paint by the way looks original.

Try using a clay bar on it. Clay bar kits can be found at a lot of automotive stores.

Clay the car first with ClayMagic. If you have a PC, I will recommend some Meg's products for ya which are more readily available to ya. Start with the least abrasive product first and see what are your results before trying something else. Start with #9 Swirl Remover. If that does not work try #80 Speed Glaze (which can be applied by hand with good results). If that does not work try #83 DACP. If this does the trick then seal your paint and/or wax. If you are willing to shop online try these products by Poorboy's and Clearkote: SSR1, SSR2, or SSR3 for the swirl problems then Vanila Moose and EX sealant. I would suggest to visit the forum over at autopia.org and ask your questions there, a picture will help alot also.

utah, thanks for all the suggestions. But I have a question, what is "Clay"? I've never heard of claying your paint. Then again that's why I'm asking these questions. The swirl remover I've heard of but I don't think that will solve the problem. Can you explain a little about this clay process? Again thanks for all knowledge.

I found the Claymagic @ the zone. I'll give it a try and let you know what the result was. Any pointers before I do any damage or is it virtually idiot proof?

QD? I did the hood and it helped but I'm gonna try this weekend a buffer and some rubbing compound. The clay smoothed it out but when you look close the entire hood is covered in tiny scratches. They look to be only in the clear coat and in no particular pattern.....so not swirls or poor care. This is either not factory finish or poor painting process from the factory. Thanks again! QD = Quick Detailer. Usually when you buy clay, you also get a QD/lubricant with it. You need to spray this on the area before you clay. This same QD/Lub can be used in-between washes to maintain. Can also be used for bird bombs. Maybe instead of a rubbing compound use a polish or glaze and see what your results are. Good Luck and have fun.
