Anyone driven or own an Escape? I got beat by one last night. I was at a redlight next to a supercharged Nissan Xterra that wanted to race, reving the engine, the whole 9 yards! The light turns green we both leave together, I start pulling away from him and in the lane on the other side of the Nissan a yellow escape is neck and neck with me. Now I'm a truck length ahead of the Nissan at 70 and the little Escape has about a whole truck length on me!!! At the next light the guy in the Escape pulled in the lane next to me ahead of the now flamed Exterra and gave a friendly wave and honk which I returned. I looked at the roof of the little Ford and it had an Xterra style rack! Whats the scoop on these little pocket rocket SUV's?

I was reading on www.car-stats.com that the 2001 ford escape xlt will do 0-60 in 8.8 seconds. It runs a quarter mile in 16.8 seconds at 83 miles per hour. This is with an automatic transmission. The XLS with a manual does 0-60 in 11 seconds and runs the quarter in 17.9 seconds at 79 MPH. I do not know what differences in engines these two trim levels have. Somebody correct me if im wrong but i believe these suvs are more car like.

So a supercharged Xterra lost to a Escape? LOL. The Xterra is rated for 210 bhp @ 4800 rpm and
Torque 246 lb-ft @ 2800 rpm.

A friend of mine has one and she is very impressed with it. She doesn't need anything big or an offroad machine, just something to tool around in and be able to get through snow safely. A pocket SUV works for her needs.

On a sad note though
0-60 MPH 8.4 Sec
1/4 Mile 16.6 Sec
1/4 Mile Speed 84 MPH

My wife's pocket SUV, Honda CR-V. Gotta love i-VTEC. It sure does piss off mini Blazers when it romps on them.

Drove a 02 Limited on nite. They're nice except the mini-van style dash board. It had some balls! Never made it over 4k rpms(it was a demo, the person worked for a Ford Dealer. Fun to drive too!

A friend of mine has one and they are quick. My only concern was towing. A dual place waverunner trailer was the limit. Good hp for a small SUV!!

They aren't bad. I'm glad that I have my Sport instead of an Escape though. They are too car like.

I never fail to spin the tires on my Dad's Escape when I have to move it. Too used to riding the Explorer throttle. Can't leadfoot those lil babies. They do move.

a good driver can get a 2wd escape bone stock into the very low 16s or maybe even high 15s. you need to remember that most of the magazines don't test the parameters of vehicles by trying to get the best times they can. they try to make it even between all cars and more real world applicable by not powerbraking at the launch or adjusting tire pressure for traction or any of that stuff.

this ones going to get exhaust, intake, and a chip real soon along with some 275/55/17 scorpion zero rubber so it should hook up real nice. i expect it to give my explorer a run for its money from a rolling start if not from a stoplight even. (that is with my truck at full weight with all of my sound deadenind and stereo stuff- which i figure weighs 220 lbs)

That's believable

You can opt. for a 210 Hp V-6 for the Escape and that's a lot for a small, light sport-ute. That's probably what that Escape had in it cuz I know the 4 banger couldn't do that. That's the same Hp the Xterra that's considerable heavier. My mom was lookin at one for a new vehical but didn't think it rode very well for some reason. From what I've read on a lot of review site, they said it had a lot of wind noise when on the highway. But I think they're pretty cool little trucks. I agree with explr1, I love that chrome yellow look.

I know a lot about the Escape since its V-6 option just happens to be shared with the Taurus :D

Anyway, the manual only comes with the 4-cylinder option which is the 2.0 Zetec motor found in the ZX2 Escort and the upgraded engine on the Focus. It's a peppy little motor, but really lacks horsepower so the truck doesn't move too quickly. The Zetec is a better idea for a lighter car such as a ZX2, but it moves the Escape decently well.

The V-6 option is the Duratec which is an awesome engine! This motor is used all over Ford's line, and will be the standard V-6 in almost all of its new vehicles. It's a fully aluminum 4V motor. It has been used in the Taurus since 1996 when it was introduced, and is now in the Escape, Mazda6, and the Lincoln LS. It can rev to infinity, and has enough low-end torque to get ya going. ANY Duratec equipped Ford vehicle is something to be feared. My SOHC has trouble keeping up with the Taurii with this engine, and my engine is a freakin' gas hog ;)

I am not surprised that the Dura Escape beat the Xterra. Xterra's suck. 210 horsepower after super-charging is an embarrasment :p I've seen people with Duratec Taurii running mid 15s with a few modifications. Now with Variable-Valve timing, and the secondary intakes runners they all have (A Dura sounds unbelievable at 4K when the secondaries open) it will have well over 240 horsepower. I believe the LS and 6 have 220.

Anyway, can't wrong with an engine Porsche had a hand in developing :D
