Quarter million miles....sheesh!

When you put it like that it sounds like so many more! 250k sounds a little less brutal! I can't believe she's still going either! Still runs great, starts right up, but has a few little issues. Some of the dash lights are burnt out, the rear main seal leaks a little bit, the driver side door lock doesn't like to pop up sometimes, and the AWD likes to bind up a bit in tight turns. But hey, I'm not going to complain! I maintain it pretty good, and this car has been amazing. I thought for sure I'd blow something when I towed a car hauler and a small sports car 360 miles, but the Merc had no issues at all! I'm sold on it!

Miles & miles

I have a 1997 Explorer 4.0 OHV, 5 speed with 369,000 actual, original miles

Quarter Million now

My '95 Limited black beauty, hit a quarter million miles (250,000) on Sunday. I got it detailed a couple weeks ago in anticipation of that event. It's glowing! I bought it new, with 39 miles Oct 24, 1995. It's had very little done to it beyond routine maint. Probably the worst was front wheel bearings at 150k, and a couple of rounds of module burnouts on the information center that kept the left headlight from working. It still has original rear brakes, and exhaust! The rear bumper is experiencing the Limited bumper rusting, and this past year started a little rust under right rear passenger door. This past summer on a trip to Wyoming, it sounds like I am starting to develop a bearing noise somewhere in the drive train that I don't think is front wheel bearings. Other than that, you'd never guess the miles it's seen.

250k on the original brake pads or rotors?

both on the back. front pads have been replaced once.

That is incredible on the Brakes!!

Mileage at 79,388. Driving way too much.... Time to put her up for the winter.

1999 76.000, compared to some on here I,am still running it in. :)

I'm at 193,000, just a cracked hose and dirty carpet.
HAHA

163,000kms, or roughly 102,000miles. Based on some of your numbers I should still be running strong for many years to come!

1998 Explorer EB may hit 70,000 miles before the end of the year .... :) garage queen.

217,000 kms, and still rock solid, though the manual box needs some work. Just redone all the ball joints and shocks, and now its very tight. :)

Just turned 170,000...never had to have any work transmission wise, HOPEFULLY got many more miles left on her...
1998 4.0L OHV v6

the better part of 400k, from what I saw - YOU WIN

I have a 1997 Explorer 4.0 OHV, 5 speed with 369,000 actual, original miles

That's amazing - I hope you've bought lifetime warranty parts along the way; pretty soon you wont have maintenance costs...

Should we have "Mile Clubs" by how many miles you have?

Should we have "Mile Clubs" on here where as you reach steps along the way you'd be in the 100,000 mile clube then the 150,000, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, Half Million Mile Club - and so on...

The Saturn dealership where I bought an Ion back in 2004 had a Mile Club wall and I was sooooo amazed of the number of half million mile members and others as well

my 1995 xlt just turned 200,000 miles the other day:)

How many on your explorers?

...just wonderin how much longer push mine

Most I got was 231K on a 99 SOHC 4wd. Still in great running condition (engine, that is) on trade-in, and no unusual noises or big problems -- but, it was definitely tired and time to go. I did a lot of 700-mile one-day trips with it (CT to NC), many times with a trailer behind me. I did not baby this one.

I bought it 2nd hand with about 30K on it, it was a trade-in at a Ford dealer. The tranny (5-speed auto) or torque converter failed on the way to the dealer to trade it on its replacement -- it would not go forward or back, no noise or incident... so I think it was the torque converter.
I had the idler pulley on the serp belt fly apart one day, but other than that, never a problem.
Never had the heads off, never had the tranny serviced other than a full flush at around 100K. Basically, gas, oil, brakes, tires and shocks, that's it.

I had a 2000 (if I recall right) Pushrod 4wd. That truck had the engine all apart by the dealer, eventually got a new rebuilt long block installed (dealer did it) but that truck just sucked and I would never buy another pushrod unit. It had absolutely no power, compared to the SOHC.

You guys over 300k are making me jealous.

2000 Explorer XLS 4WD. Just over 257,000 miles.

Just this past week, I replaced both Front Hub Bearing assemblies due to ABS sensor problem causing ABS to kick in at low speeds. This also prompted replacement of both outer tie rod ends, both upper control arms, new front and rear brake pads and rotors. Except for the Hub Bearing Assemblies, the rest was compliments of AutoZone's lifetime warranties. Also ended up putting on new tires and paying for front end alignment.

Other non-routine work in no particular order,
changed all shocks before 200,000 miles.
changed Shift Solenoid D in trans valve body (computer told me which one)
Idler tension pulley fell off a few years ago
CarMax replaced Hood Latch twice. Ended up doing it again myself for $90 in parts after warranty expired and never had the problem again.
Replaced stabilizer links in 2008
Heater Control Valve cracked in 2010
Alternator went out on a road trip to Florida many years ago (bought a battery at Walmart and changed the battery without turning it off in order to cover the last 100 miles of the trip)
Welded small pipe section between muffler and catalytic converter due to flex pipe and related parts rusting through.
Replaced DPFE and rubber tubes for EGR line when it mysteriously melted through.
Mysteriously overheated while driving 85MPH in 90 degree weather on a trip to Niagara Falls via Canada (just added water and all seemed to be 'normal' again).
Replaced EGR Line and valve earlier this year (amazing Ford Dealer was half the price compared to everyone else for the EGR line itself)

I also just pulled my Heater Blend Door Actuator, took it apart, cleaned the sensor contacts, rebent the contact springs, put it back together, and now it works fine (I took pictures, I should post a thread for this).

I'm a little nervous having sunk another $700 into it to keep her on the road.

I have quite a bit of corrosion underneath.
All of the brake lines looked like it wouldn't take much to rupture.
I'm leaking power steering fluid from the rack (albeit slowly and only when actually running).
Spark plug in Cylinder 3 starts misfiring about 10,000 miles after changing it each time. It has done this ever since the Explorer overheated in Canada.
It's burning a small amount of oil regularly and gives off a burnt oil smell after warmed up.

But, I would say that having bought this vehicle new with only 7 miles on the odometer, I have been very satisfied. I could be forgetting a few repairs, but that's probably a testament to how much of a non-issue they probably were. I probably wasted more time and mental frustration trying to get a hood latch covered under warranty than when I changed all the ball joints/control arms or than when I changed all the shocks (thank god for angle grinders).

Am about to roll over 298,000 on the 96 XLT 4WD, 4.0 pushrod V6. Only non-maintenance issues were: Set of head gaskets, radiator, an alternator, and a fuel pump. Am 3rd owner, first 2 were maintenance-aholics:D Been a really good ride for me.
