How Many Miles to a Tank?

I started this thread hoping for a couple responses so I wouldn't run out of fuel. Thanks to everyone for all the enthusiasm! Since my post, my gas gauge has started working. I think it was fine the whole time. I had just really filled the tank way full, and it stayed on "F" for a couple days. I've now gone about 80 miles and have only used a quarter of a tank. I'll do the math at the next fill-up; but it would appear that I'm getting decent mileage...

i almost get the same as aldive. i fill up on monday with 1/4 tank left and usually have about 460+ miles on my tank. if i tried i might get 500 miles out of a tank. keep up the good work aldive.

edit: BTW i top off the tank everytime.

I think I am at about 200 miles (mostly city) on my 96/5.0.

The day after I bought it (used in 2000) was searching the internet and found that the 1996 is the worst gas mileage of all the Explorers. Apparently Ford made a last minute change to compete with the Jeep SUV horsepower that year. The articles gave it high praise in everything except I think they advised owners to buy petroleum stock.

Oh well, I love the V-8, it always starts, has never spun a wheel in snow and is comfortable to drive.

One thing about my gas gauge is that when it gets down just under a quarter tank it lies sometimes... when you turn it off and restart it will be on E with the warning light on. Also on the full side it tends to lie...I over filled it and drove over 75 miles before it backed down to Full then it dropped real fast to half a tank over the next 75 miles....and even faster to E.

I get about 295 a tank; Last I checked that number, I had new tires, new plugs, fresh tune-up (before a long road trip), plus I have the KKM Induction Kit, and a clean MAF.

How the heck are you guys getting over 300?? What else do I have to do?

Unless it's the MPH that's making a huge difference; I drive all highway to work, and cruise around 75-80.

I have a 1996 ford explorer sport. I can get 310 miles to a tank of gas on the interstate and less in the city. Hope that helps.

I'm with ya !!!!..........stock 4.0, with K&N, fresh tune. 275 miles MAX out of a tank and 3 plus tanks a WEEK :fire:
Yeah I drive 75-90 MPH and 75 miles each way to work. I my as well drop a V-8...........Buzz

any 1 here have a 98 xlt 4.0 v6 stock. i was wondering how big my gas tank is becuase i am only getting about 215-230 mpg. i drive a 50/50 highway/city becasue i drive 15 minutes of highway to school everyday. i don't think its a 21 like most, but im not sure.

I do, i have a 98 xlt 4.0 v6 ohv. My gas tank holds 21 gallons i think and i get around 280-320 most of it being city.

Don't all 4.0 4-doors hold 21g??? Only the sport had a smaller tank.

Anyway, before i got rid of her, i had a big :D on my face if i hit the 200mi mark, and that's primarily city driving - 1/10mi at a time, just to the next stopsign(light).

I did make a highway trip pulling a 1000lb trailer at about 75mph and got 350mi on her last summer, though. Boy, was i happy.

wow if my tank is 21 then my gas mpg sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently your definition of highway and the state of Texas definition of highway is completely different.

For example, 16 miles = 32 stops!

Keep in mind that’s 97% highway

Aldive I think I need you to help me to remember what a real highway is :p

So to keep on topic, I get about 220 out of 3 quarters of a tank which for me is 15-16 gallons of gas.

So on avg. 15.5-16.6 mpg

I fill up about 3 miles from I75 and drive on I75 all the way to Atlanta and refill about 4 miles from the Interstate.

That, my friend, is all hughway driving.

My gas hog gets about 200 miles to a tank. 170 miles and the "Low Fuel Level" message appears in the message center. 200 miles and the check gage light comes on. I know, terrible mileage. My driving is mostly <2 mile trips to work and under 8 mile runs to and from school.

i get between 220 and 260 driving like an idiot. i ONCE got 300 miles with stock tires.... once

184 miles and 14.6 gallons to fill up...12.6 mpg...not a happy camper!

And all this time, with all my complaints about the horrendous mileage i got in my 96 4.0hv, i thought i was the only one with these types of mileage problems....
