How To: 91-94 X Head light & corners swap

....I took a few minutes today and finally installed the LED 194's..

....In the daylight (when lit) and next to the standard 3157 amber bulbs, they look like they are an amber, white bulb...Not as amber as the 3157 but they do look almost invisible when they are off...I'm going to be staring at them tonight to see what I think..

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but keep in mind the "clear" reflectors make the setup illegal, state laws require an amber reflector on the front side of motor vehicles. It's doubtful you'll get pulled over for it, but if you do get any hassle, you can just get a strip of reflective amber tape and put it over the rear edge of the reflector or something.

Keeping the bulbs amber may also make it look enough like an amber lens.

Was there a brand name or manufacturer on the box for the kit? I've been looking at these for a long time, but usually these "diamond" headlights are made in China and the quality of both the plastic assembly, and especially the reflector, is terrible.

It still might be an upgrade over the stock lights for however long they last.

...No problem...:biggthump

...I am fully aware of the Law's on Lighting for vehicles and you can find a number of post on this Forum where I try to inform others on the differences and requirements required by their State and the D.O.T.

..Having amber bulbs will not replace having front, amber reflectors, side markers, as required....

...I hope you find what you are looking for..;)

Actually....

Actually, that is incorrect.
The CA vehicle code states nothing about the color of the reflectors
My father was a traffic officer for 29 years and retired this past winter.
I have asked him about the legality of any mod i have done to my vehicle and as long as the front turn signal lights up amber/ yellow or even white, it is legal.

CA Vehicle code 24953. (a) Any turn signal system used to give a signal of intention to turn right or left shall project a flashing white or amber light visible to the front and a flashing red or amber light visible to the rear.

JUST FYI

....There are several codes, especially in Calif. on Lighting and Lamps...When vehicles are manufactured they come with the proper lighting as required by Federal Law....Any alteration in that will be subject to a penalty...

...As for the California Code that was just given by CJEplorer, it relates to "Light" and "Lamp", but not "Reflector"...

...All vehicles are required to have, and are installed with from the factory in accordance to Federal Requirements, an Amber, front, side reflector and a Red rear, side reflector from the factory...These are also referred to as side markers, (unlit)...These are supplied so the vehicle can be seen at night, when the vehicle is parked or disabled on the road...

...As for the State of California, Here is one of the many codes that enforce the side Reflectors..

CALIFORNIA VEHICLE CODE
25803 b) A vehicle shall also be equipped with an amber reflector on
the front near the left side and a red reflector on the rear near the
left side. The reflectors shall be mounted on the vehicle not lower
than 16 inches nor higher than 60 inches above the ground and so
designed and maintained as to be visible during darkness from all
distances within 500 feet from the vehicle when directly in front of
a motor vehicle displaying lawful lighted headlamps undimmed.

how much do the lights cost? I'm looking for some for my '91 Ranger

....They can be found by several sellers on Ebay...They range in price's from about $70 just for the headlights or, $100-$150 for all 6 front lamps...

When doing an ebay search, what words do you guys use to find these lights? I am very interested in replacing my badly corroded headlights.

..You are welcome...

...You really should start an Explorer registry and include some pics of you and your Explorer...After fixing your window and getting new headlights, I can only imagine your are very happy with your X...:D

Registry? What's that?

Yes, I am very proud of my X. I love it :) Being a girl, not many ppl are like me around here LOL!

...Here is where you can go to start a free, Non-Elite Explorer Registry...

...There are a few girls that were really regular posters but lately haven't posted that much...That is what made me suggest you starting a registry as it seems you have the enthusiasm right not to perhaps show other ladies how easy it is to fix up your X...The guys would be interested too, especially after they see pics of your new head light fix you did yourself...;)

..Before and after pics are always a hit...:biggthump

OHHH ok, gotcha :) Will do :) Yeah, I'm pretty well liking this rig, my husband thinks I'm crazy for selling the subaru we had, but I'm having much more fun with the X than I ever would have with that subaru.

...The Explorer and fun is definitly what this place is all about...:biggthump

Yeah, I'm crazy about it! I told myself, never would I ever own an SUV lol.

Can't wait to be able to afford some nice mods for him too ;)

now that i can see the lights..

I figured this forum would do considering the topic, i just finished installing my diamond headlights only to notice that both corners have been burnt out all this time! just wondering if anyone know the bulb type??
its a 94.

I spotted the posts about the 194bulb but i wasn't sure if that was the signal bulb. either way i'm replacing my signals and corners as one of the signals doesn't come on when i turn on the headlights, but lights up for the turn signal? I'm assuming dual filament?

someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong. all in all i'm looking for the bulb numbers for both corners and the signals

Mike
