Ok, this might be a little hard to under stand but if you wouldn’t mind giving me some advice/help that would be awesome. I want to attach some steel cable to my frame I don’t know how to do this so I would love some help on the sturdiest way I could do this well like I was saying I want to attach the steel cable to my frame then drill 2 hole in my front valance (one for each cable) then pull the cable through the holes then attach some d rings or hooks to them and if every thing goes right I will have some awesome looking recovery points. What do you think?:D

since money seems to be ur enemy as well as mine, get those u-bolst they use fir putting hooks on the end of cables and start looking around ur whip for a good place to mount..

when I saw this post name "I have an idea.."

and that it was by you, I was a little scared to open it

its not as bad as I expected

I would almost be afraid that with a hard enough tug it could "tear" the frame. Isn't it pretty easy to bolt on some hooks that cost like $10.

do you guys think it would have enough strength to be a recovery point?

also has any one done this before?

yeah i was thinking about using some u bolts but they just dont look that sturdy

I'll have to get some shots of the beefy little tow points i have on my rear, and the regular tow hooks on the front also. will post pics soon........

see i know tow hooks are cheap and strong but i want some thing strong and some thing i can show off at the same time.

cable = bad idea
it can stretch, frey, wear out and not to mention pull your valance apart as soon as you pull from one point, the cable is going to want to sandwich whatever it is wrapped around.

There is a reason why we use hooks as attaching points

Ya, if I had cable tow hooks I wouldnt want to show them off, i would trya nd hide them.

Theres no reason to have to wonder if something is strong enough, Because at 3am in the cold and mud when you find out it isnt strong enough your going to kick your own ass. Along with everyone else depending on it. make it strong, to strong the first time and forget it. You would spend more making the cable idea work then just a few bolts and the tow hooks.

Besides what is "show off" worthy about a cable, if you want it to look cool just get some chrome hooks.

well my dog broke some cable we had her attached to and it had like this red rubber stuff over it that i thought would look really cool coming through the valance but since every one is saying this is basically a bad idea so i Guess i will just git some tow hooks

If yer dog broke it, wouldn't a tug from another truck break it?

Good choice on goin with the hooks :D

my dog is a beast but i was gunna go for a hire rating cable for my truck my dogs cable was rated at 180 or some thing like that i think it might have bin hirer

If you used winch cable it would be strong enough.

But, here's the problem(s)-

1- You will only have one bolt through the cable to mount it through the frame. This isnt enough. This is why most tow hooks have two or three bolts. The one bolt through the cable eye will quickly egg shape the hole in the frame, then tear loose possibly cutting the head off of whoever is with you. Not cool to have random spectator heads rolling down the trail.

2- As already mentioned, the cable would tear up anything in its path to a straight line from which you pull. In other words, whatever is inbetween the cable's "bolt to the frame" point and the point the cable is attached will get pinched. And im not talking that little spoiled ass Sarah from 3rd grade kind of pinch, im talking tear your airdam off and cut through your bumper kind of pinched.

3- Any point were the cable is pinched, it will fray. This will get worse and worse as each time it is used, until inevitably the cable breaks and cuts the head off of someone standing closeby.

Just get some towhooks and be done with it. :)
