Jakee's 4.0 SOHC Build up discussion and motivation thread

You do however need an SCT flasher, the program will set your A/F at about 12.7.
Which is right about where you want to be with any boltons.

..and move the MAF counts from 980 to 1023 giving you more useable MAF. I personally think the factory SOHC 70mm MAF is MORE than enough. My Whipplecharged Ranger ran on an SOHC MAF past 250 at the wheels just fine. Factory MAF's are FAR easier to tune as well.

Don't expect a huge gain from a C&L (7HP proven by Aldive, I think) but I've experimented with a 73MM Diameter spectra meter housing (that I bored myself) and it does help the flow a bit.

Tuning shouldn't be a problem with an experienced tuner like I'm gonna use especially when this mod has been done many times before me.

7 H.P. is a huge gain for a MAF mod

What body? The website doesn't list a single Explorer and the only pix are bullet style (flangeless) Mustang MAF's...

[edit] ..Doh! Nevermind, I followed the link in your sig!
Thanks.

Jake, how do you know how much it helps the flow?

One - Aldives chart he just posted.
Two - I can feel the differnence. Take that how you want but I know it's not in my head. I do tests on the street and I know my X pretty well. Every mod I do, I learn what it did just by knowing the truck so well.

I can say this, sometimes you do a mod, take it out and you feel a differnce, right? Then you time it and you gain nothing! But you know for sure there was something different? I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. My conclusion is the truck is pulling at different ranges after the mod. Something you were not use to before.

I just finished creating high flow cats. I'm diffenatly @ 7.5 0-60 average now. I've ran that before but not consistant like now. I figure the MAF housing will get me even closer to 7.0. Then the Electric fan will get me closer as well as the pulley. Then the tune. When I hit the 6's then I know I'm very close to one goal which is high 14's N/A. Then it will be time for the track to see if I'm right and I time slip to prove it. However, I will never see this if I don't do something with my rear-end!

Everyone's truck is different so I don't expect 7HP. But, the proof is there, it does something.

I forgot to mention the obvious reason, it's bigger in Diameter than stock.

Hey, Jakee, I'm not attacking you. You do whatever makes you happy. It's your truck and your money. I just look forward to your results.

I know you're not attacking me and I'm not thinking that. you guys want proof and I understand that completly. It's frustrating to me cuss I feel strongly that where I am is looking pretty good but just can't proove it with my current situation. It'll be proven, just not in the time frame I thought. Don't get me wrong, I still think my truck is slower than heck. Just looks a HECK of A LOT better than where I started from.

9.4 0-60 to a 7.5 0-60 with just Intake and exhaust? (Well, more than that but those are the major mods)

I'm looking forward to the tune!

And just for everyone's knowledge;

JAH81592 is supplying me with the parts I buy and will tune my truck. I trust him completly. At the final tune, I will drive to Alabama to get the tune. Jah81592 and I will go to the track where we can get some data, hopefully vidieos and so forth.

James is a good guy. I meet him in B'ham at the dyno facility.

Than start posting up some results jakee, you have been all show and no go.
you will never achieve what your expectations are.
will never happen.
If you think it will, than move along, if you ever think you can ever run 6s, your living in LALA land, JMO

A half second plus to shave off with a lot more to do. We will see. Yes, spindle it CAN and will be done.

Hey Jakee, lemme know when you come to AL, I may drive up to B'ham to meet you guys.

Will do. It may be awhile but, my plan is in the next few months. The problems I'm facing are; Christmas is coming up, we have another trip to PA thanksgiving, and I haven't got my wife all the way convinced that a fast explorer is cool. In due time...

Au01st - have you been to the track lately? Do you have any idea what your 0-60 time is? Your best 1/4 mile was 15.5 right? (Just need a little help confirming "roughly" where I am)

By the way, (looking in the future) I have this wild idea on making my own intake to accept the M-90. I've almost got it figured out on the intake side but I'm still figuring the TB adaptor, blow off valve and things like that. My idea is that the stock bottom half of the intake can be used. (There has to be more strength with brackets and such but I think I have that figured out) This will bring down the cost of the intake, and personally, I think it will flow better, as well as tackle any heat issues there might be. The flip side is with using the bottom half, there might be clearance issues, and it has to be strong enough to support the supercharger without uprooting bolts out of the plastic. But if there were brackets that supported the charger, I think this should work. I may have to get a hood scoop but I don't mind that. Anyone have any suggestions?

Haven't been lately, planning to go in the next week or two. 15.5 is on intake, y-pipe, exhaust, and tune. The only nearby track charges $25 to race, more than double what I used to pay. Ima try and go either next friday or the friday after that. It depends on my school work and whether or not I have work that night.
